Pac-Man Hydrant Glitch Makes Edge Guarding a Breeze in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Yesterday we featured an article about Pac-Man’s ability to cause his opponents to fall through stages, but it seems that isn’t the only glitch that the Namco representative is bringing to the fight in the current version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Pac-Man aficionado PEPESPAIN has uncovered what may be the scariest edge guarding method in the game, thanks to a glitch that they’re calling the “angry hydrant.” It seems that a hydrant dropped with precise timing won’t fire any water, but will maintain an active hitbox for its duration. This means that the retro gaming icon can drop this hydrant after knocking an opponent from the stage, then sit back and watch them struggle to return.

So far, PEPESPAIN says that this only works on the right side of the stage, but it definitely looks to be worth picking up for all of you Pac-Mains out there.

Some time back, we reported that Sega was working to publish a sequel to BaseSon’s Shin Koihime Musou called Koihime Enbu. Now, the company has announced that the game will be hitting PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan this September.

Based on China’s popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, this fighting game series sees the major army figures reimagined as women.

Koihime Enbu will arrive on consoles in two distinct packages: a standard edition that costs ¥6,800 (~$55 USD) and a special first-print limited edition that comes with the game’s soundtrack for ¥8,800 yen (~$71 USD).

Originally set to launch on PlayStation 3 last February, the game’s release date quietly slipped past that without much fanfare. Now, with this announcement, any players interested in picking this game up have another date to look forward to.

For more details, be sure to visit Koihime Enbu’s official website.

Community Effort Orlando 2015’s Smash Payouts Increased Thanks to Twitch and Smashboards

ceo-2015-logo-smash-622-crop

Even though the event is just around the corner, the folks behind Community Effort Orlando continue to make surprise announcements regarding this year’s tournament.

According to details released last night, both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will receive rather substantial increases to their prize pools courtesy of contributions from Twitch and Smashboards. The former is ready to supply an additional $2000 to each game while the latter has pitched in $1000 of their own, which, for those of you keeping track at home, amounts to a $3000 bonus for each game.

But the Smash scene isn’t the only one to benefit from outside influence. Ultra Street Fighter IV, Killer Instinct, and Mortal Kombat X have all seen massive pot bonuses of at least $10,000 courtesy of community initiatives by their respective developers.

Community Effort Orlando 2015 is scheduled for this weekend, June 26-28, in Orlando, Florida. Further details can be found on their official website.

Proximity Guard Option Selects Appear in Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-

If you’ve been paying attention to any feeds surrounding Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, you might have heard mention of a recently discovered option select that has quite a few players worried. It’s a type of option select that has appeared in other games before, but hasn’t quite appeared as strong as this incarnation or even remotely as applicable. Here’s an in-depth explanation on how it works.

This technique relies on a pretty basic concept that appears in a lot of games called proximity guard, so let’s go over that real quick. Proximity guard is simply the mechanic that, if a character is holding back while in proximity to a move, they will enter into a blocking animation, whether or not they will actually block the move.

This exists in most fighters and is most easily noticed in the Street Fighter IV series. In the image below, if a player were to be holding back while in the extended yellow box of the move, they would be locked into proximity blocking. Do note that Street Fighter IV is an extreme example, as proximity guard is triggered much farther than normal when compared to other games.

smptp

Now that we understand what proximity guard is, how does this option select utilize it? Well, it would appear that when ending a special move input with Faultless Defense, instead of that special move, you will simply get Faultless Defense. However, if the user is put into a state of proximity blocking while the move is buffered, the special move will come out instead of Faultless Defense.

Basically, all you need to do is input a special move and end the input with Faultless Defense. If proximity guard is triggered, you get the special move; if not, then the character will simply flash Faultless Defense and be left at neutral. Here’s a couple of quick video of the option select in action.

So, there is the option select functioning out of neutral situations. If you’ve been around before, this looks really similar to an option select known to exist in Street Fighter IV. That version had many drawbacks and ultimately found little to no use in competitive play. But in the case of Xrd, the disadvantages associated with the Street Fighter variant are not present thanks to Faultless Defense allowing it to be performed in a greater number of situations with relative safety. This means that, in neutral, it can be used with little to no risk to catch certain moves with stronger specials and to safely hide special move inputs on defense, and it may even have offensive applications to cover multiple options a defensive opponent may choose.

It is still important to note the option select’s inherent limitations. This can all occur assuming the player does the input in a state that would allow them to enter proximity guard. That means a character cannot be running, airborne, otherwise in recovery, or a state other than neutral, such as blockstun. Furthermore, a move’s proximity guard triggering hitbox exists during startup frames, meaning the special move can be triggered by kara-canceling into Faultless Defense, as seen here:

It’s worth noting that the timing window is incredibly strict, but it is an option that can be explored. As more and more players work on developing the option select, others are scrambling to come up with countermeasures.

Now that we’ve seen what the option select is, let’s discuss one last aspect. When you input this option, it is assumed you will get one of two outcomes: a special move or Faultless Defense. In the case of the latter, a player will only need to flash Faultless Defense for an instant before being returned to neutral, meaning another input can be left there for the character to perform instead. One could even add Roman Cancel inputs on top of these options. Players haven’t fully explored this concept yet, but ideas and tests have appeared across the online community.

With Evo 2015 only a few weeks away, this is a pretty major and possibly game-changing discovery. There isn’t a lot of time to fully develop and begin to implement all the ideas here, but the neutral uses have already begun to be tested in live matches and notable players are doing their best to discover practical situations. It’s only a matter of time until we see if this option select creeps its way into the game proper and becomes a major playing point, or if it fizzles out and dies in similar fashion to other known techniques.

Show Me Your Moves! Learn Captain Falcon’s Infinite in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Captain Falcon’s standard down special is all well and good, but when looking to stack up some serious damage, replacing the fire-based Falcon Kick with the custom lightning variation is the only way to fly. If timed properly, Falcon is capable of performing a footstool followed by a Lightning Falcon Kick until he sees fit to end his opponent’s stock with a forward air.

As you’ll see in the video below from My Smash Corner, the infinite works on every character in the game. There are, of course, a handful of timing alterations that come into play depending on who is on the receiving end. These have to do with the height an opponent needs to reach before a footstool will keep them trapped, and some large characters also require special spacing. But once the hits start flowing, it’s just a matter of time until the Captain claims a stock.

It should be noted that a few of Evo 2015’s officially approved custom move sets include this special, so it remains to be seen how much this will affect a major competition.

Upcoming Character Skins, Predator Data Present in Mortal Kombat X After Recent Update

Earlier today, a brand new patch was applied to Mortal Kombat X that, in addition to fixing the PlayStation 3 driver and balancing numerous members of the cast, included a sneak peek at the next round of character skins.

As you can see in the gallery below, Jax Briggs, Johnny Cage, and Scorpion will all receive alternate outfits that fall in line with the title’s next post-release character, Predator, by giving players the opportunity to bust out combos as Carl Weathers or an eye-straining infrared ninja.

Carl Weathers Jax Briggs
Commando Johnny Cage
Infrared Scorpion
Klassic Scorpion

And, speaking of Predator, the classic movie monster has also appeared in Mortal Kombat X after this latest patch, though unfortunately not in any playable form. At the moment, you can currently check out his profile in the game’s Kollection, but it’s still anyone’s guess as to when he will officially join the roster.

Thinking back to Tanya, details like these started to show up about a month before her release, so it’s likely we’ll receive more word on Predator in the coming weeks.
