Honzo Gonzo Takes Jax, Ferra, Torr, and Shinnok to Training Mode in New Mortal Kombat X Combo Guides

Learning combos is an important part of becoming competitive in many fighters, the same can definitely be said for Mortal Kombat X. The title’s rushdown-heavy gameplay and low single poke damage means players will have to be able to maximize their conversions off any hit.

To help those learning to do this, Marvelous Customs’ Honzo Gonzo recently started a series of combo guides, the first of which feature returning fighters Jax Briggs and Shinnok as well as newcomers Ferra and Torr. As you’ve probably guessed, these videos demonstrate a number of combos that folks should have in their back pocket, spread across every variation.

Give these videos a spin and see if you can’t learn a thing or two. And, if you happen to find them useful, perhaps you could visit Honzo’s Patreon and provide some support for his work. He’d probably really appreciate it!

ect-logo-ssb4-622-crop

Although East Coast Throwdown made waves by announcing perennial favorite Mortal Kombat will close out this year’s event instead of Street Fighter, they are ready to move into uncharted waters by adding two Smash titles to the lineup.

Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will add a mixture of old and new gameplay to the proceedings, an arena of competition that has yet to be seen at East Coast Throwdown. In order to make sure things go off without a hitch, the organizers have brought in an experienced lineup of tournament runners and broadcasters to oversee the new titles.

Additionally, both games will see a $500 pot bonus added to their prize pools, adding a little extra incentive for Smashers to check out the event.

East Coast Throwdown 2015 is scheduled for June 13-14 in Morristown, New Jersey. Feel free to check out the official website for more details.

Killer Instinct Community Fund Grants $15,000 Pot Bonus to CEO 2015, $10,000 to Combo Breaker

The developers behind Killer Instinct will be providing substantial pot bonuses to tournaments thanks to their recent fundraising efforts. The first to be announced, Evo 2015, is set to receive half of the $100,000 raised, but new details released on Ultra-Combo reveal two more tournaments that will be getting in on the action as well.

Community Effort Orlando 2015 and Combo Breaker have been granted $15,000 and $10,000 respectively for their Killer Instinct prize pools, adding to some already impressive support heading their way. The higher amount of the former will allow organizers to spread the bonus throughout top sixteen, while folks who make it into top eight at the latter can look forward to a slice of the pie.

The community fund’s $100,000 cap was raised in just three days thanks to the sale of Killer Instinct downloadable content, which included the first public release of the Shadow Jago skin. Thanks to the dedication shown by fans across the world, Shadow Jago will eventually join the playable cast as his own unique character.

Combo Breaker is scheduled to take place May 22-24 in Chicago, Illinois, with Community Effort Orlando 2015 planning to turn up the heat in Florida this summer the weekend of June 26. Be sure to follow the previous links for more details on these events.

This announcement leaves $25,000 in the community fund, so stay tuned for word on more tournament support in the near future.

Circuitous Demonstrates the True Effects of One Frame Jumps in the Guilty Gear XX Series

In Guilty Gear’s XX series, there’s a technique that’s been around for a very long time called “one frame jump.” In short, players theorized that by holding down the input for Faultless Defense while jumping, they could reduce jump startup to one frame. This was later proven false, but it has been theorized and argued that the technique may still reduce jump startup by one frame, along with other various interpretations of its effects.

Circuitous recently released a short video to explore the technique and clear out any misconceptions as to its function. Through the use of emulation software and frame by frame recording, he proves that one frame jumping does not reduce jump startup in any capacity, and that it simply affects a character’s hurtbox by putting them into a blocking animation immediately off of the ground.

Maybe it’s about time we come up with a more appropriate name for this trick?

Jason Lives! Combo Breaker Updates Downloadable Content and Patch Rules

combobreaker-skyline-edit

Last week, we reported that Mortal Kombat X newcomer and horror movie veteran Jason Voorhees would not be allowed during competition at Combo Breaker due to the proximity of his release to the tournament’s scheduled weekend. According to a new official ruling, however, this has changed, making the man with the machete legal for the Chicago-based event.

Combo Breaker’s updated guidelines mention that Killer Instinct’s Cinder will also be legal during play and Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- competitors can look forward to using ver.1.1. Sorry, Elphelt players

Finally, the announcement states that the event’s staff “will continue to monitor new content for game breaking bugs or exploits, and retains the right to make case-by-case decisions on these matters at any time.” So these rulings, as well as any others, are still subject to change until the time of the tournament.

Combo Breaker will be held May 22-24 in Chicago, Illinois.

Saturday Morning Scrublords Throw Down in KOF: Maximum Impact 2

The Super Best Friends have returned with another episode of Saturday Morning Scrublords, this time tackling KOF: Maximum Impact 2, or, as the North American localization was dubbed, King of Fighters 2006.

While the opening cutscene rolls, Woolie points out that “this game is SNK fan service beyond anything else,” and it’s easy to see just how correct he is once they start selecting characters. The game sports a massive cast and an even more massive wardrobe for them to flaunt as they throw fists at each other. Some of the costumes are normal enough while others border on disturbing. You’ll get to check out some of each when the guys start fighting each other.

Beyond standard versus matches, Maximum Impact 2 sports a handful of “extra missions,” which include options like fighting against a parked car a la Street Fighter, a confusing battle with a Metal Slug, and the completely ridiculous rumble with an oncoming steamroller, which culminates in the piece of heavy equipment being pushed over a cliff when successfully completed.

If you missed this era in the King of Fighters series, or just want to watch the crew’s NSFW antics, be sure to check out the video below.
