Try Post-Launch Characters Without Buying in Mortal Kombat X’s Living Towers

mkx-livingtowers

While the game itself has yet to hit stores, Mortal Kombat X already has a decent sized list of planned downloadable content. For those who are are curious about Jason Voorhees, Tremor, Predator, and Tanya but aren’t sure that they want to purchase them, NetherRealm Studios has revealed that you will be able to try them out before buying them.

According to series producer Ed Boon, the game’s Tower Mode will have three towers reserved for testing out upcoming characters in the Living Towers section. Each one changes characters based at different times, with one changing every hour and another changing every day.

The third tower is the Premier Tower, which he says is an “event tower.” There, players will get a chance to see how the post-launch cast members play, even if they haven’t purchased them. While fans won’t be able to subject the characters to high-level competition, this will be the perfect opportunity to get used to their basics before deciding to drop money.

Mortal Kombat X hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 14, and will arrive on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime this summer.

Mad Catz’ Daigo Umehara to Retire from Competitive Fighting Games

It is with heavy hearts that we bring you the news that one of the fighting game community’s brightest stars is leaving us. None other than the Beast himself, Mad Catz’ Daigo Umehara, has announced his retirement from fighting games.

One of the genre’s greatest competitors, Umehara’s career has spanned more than a decade, with numerous storied rivalries with players such as Level|Up Series’ Alex Valle and Evil Geniuses’ Justin Wong. It was in a match with the latter in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike that the now hyper-famous Evo Moment #37 occured.

His other accomplishments include being the first and only back-to-back champion in Street Fighter IV at Evolution as well as winning multiple Super Battle Operas. Additionally, he became an author with his book “The Will to Keep Winning” back in 2012.

As for his future plans, Umehara will be joining Japanese cloud based accounting software provider freee.  The company has released the following video, where Umehara discusses how he will transition to the corporate world.

Mortal Kombat X Downloadable Content Release Schedule Revealed

mkx-kombatpack-622-crop

Mortal Kombat X is set to be bolstered by a variety of downloadable content after its launch next month, and today we’ve been provided a pretty clear look at the release schedule courtesy of EB Games Australia.

According to a promotional email received by Test Your Might community member n-megabytes, the upcoming NetherRealm Studios title will see its playable cast expanded soon after it appears on store shelves, with Friday the 13th antagonist Jason Voorhees arriving twelve days later on April 26. Tremor, Predator, and Tanya will follow in that order every two weeks alongside the bonus skins included in each bundle.

One of the greatest boons of this schedule, apart from how quickly players will get to throw down as these characters, is that the full cast should be playable by Evo 2015 in July.

Keep in mind that, because these are Australian dates, it’s likely this content will show up in other regions either before or after the folks down under get their hands on it, so stay tuned for more refined worldwide scheduling.

Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to land on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 14. PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 ports will come later this summer.

Super Best Friends Take the Fight to the Future in One Must Fall: 2097

In their most recent episode of Friday Night Fisticuffs, the Super Best Friends take a trip to the not-so-distant future for their second Mechaweek. As “Mechaweek” probably gave away, the game of choice pits giant robot against giant robot–or in the case of this game, Human Assisted Robot against Human Assisted Robot–in an all-out battle.

That game is none other than Epic Megagames’ One Must Fall: 2097.

This title was obscure when it came out back in 1994 and that certainly hasn’t changed. It released for IBM-compatible computers and was created early enough in the history of gaming to have existed on floppy disks, which always adds a certain degree of class that one can’t find in other distribution methods. Since it hit shelves a couple of years into the fighting game revolution of the early 90s, it’s pretty clear where it got most of its influences. I mean, if the fact that it features Fatality-style, round-ending attacks called “scrap” and “destruction” moves isn’t enough, one of the HARs even brings some of Noob Saibot’s attacks to the battle.

One Must Fall did have some of its own flair, though. For one, instead of picking a single fighter before entering a match, players choose a pilot and the HAR they will control. There’s a sort of stat system that affects the way that certain pilots drive each mecha, so the matchup potential stands to be rather deep for a game with such a small roster. Additionally, it’s got stage hazards, which include things like giant spikes appearing from the background and slamming into the fighting HARs, or my personal favorite, fly-by attacks from fighter jets.

If you long for an old-school slugfest that centers around massive machines mauling one another, check out the video below.

Billy Kane Takes the Stage in Persona’s Newest King of Fighters XIII Combo Video

Persona is back with another King of Fighters XIII combo video, this time focusing on the staff-wielding Billy Kane. As with all of the previous entries in their long running King of Fighters combo video series, Persona delivers devastating strings that range from useful to not-even-close-to-practical.

This is the second outing from the combo master that focuses on Billy, but this time around, things have changed. These updates, which Persona outlines fully in the video’s description, come mostly from proper use of HD mode as well as the application of various combo extensions that allow for stylish followups to his Super.

Whether you’re looking for some new combos to add to your own repertoire, or if you just love watching Persona do what they do best, be sure to check out the video below.

SoCal Regionals 2015 Delay Unavoidable, Level|Up Series Announces

scr-2015-banner-622-crop

After a week of holding our breath, Level|Up Series has announced that the possible delay to this year’s SoCal Regionals is now an unfortunate reality.

Due to construction issues, the event’s original venue is no longer able to accommodate them for the original May 1-3 dates. The hunt for a new location, however, has not resulted in any replacements, so the organizers are currently looking to the next month to hold their tournament.

As of now, they currently have an appointment to secure a venue for June 5-7, but nothing definite can be nailed down at this point in time.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated as soon as more SoCal Regionals 2015 details become available.

Kresent Shows How a Hitbox Can Up Firebrand’s Fireball Game in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Everyone has their preferred input method for fighting games and it’s rare to find any clear advantage for using one controller as opposed to another. Generally speaking, the right input method is the one that feels the most comfortable, and in many cases that means the controller type that the given player grew up with.

There are, however, certain situations where a controller can provide a sizable advantage over its counterparts: it’s easier to plink on a fightstick than a pad, for example, and it seems to be much easier to rapidly choke up projectiles as Firebrand in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 on a Hitbox than anything else.

To demonstrate this penchant for filling the screen with fire, Kresent has put together a quick video that offers the method that he uses to consistently release flames with the Ghosts ‘n Goblins villain.

And if you didn’t catch Apologyman’s impressive Firebrand combo video earlier this week, which includes things as ridiculous as scoring a combo off of a Team Aerial Counter, be sure to check that out, too!
