NorCal Regionals 2015’s Community Choice Games Decided; Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and More

ncr-2015-logo-black-622-crop

NorCal Regionals, typically hyper-focused on Capcom games like Ultra Street Fighter IV and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, has once again allowed the community to decide which games will also be included in the official lineup for this year’s event. While a title needed only eight entrants to be considered, the recent March 15 deadline gave us a clear picture of which scenes will be showing up to Sacramento to compete and which will not.

According to an email being sent out to registrants, Skullgirls, Street Fighter x Tekken, Divekick, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, Soulcalibur V, Soulcalibur II, and Capcom vs. SNK 2 did not receive enough participants to keep a spot in the roster.

These results show a continuing decline in 3D representation outside of particular regions, but perhaps the most surprising is the absence of interest in perennial favorite Capcom vs. SNK 2.

Fortunately, it’s not all bad news! Fans of King of Fighters XIII, Killer Instinct, Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, and BlazBlue: Chronophantasma will be joining the aforementioned Capcom games as well as Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U in the weekend’s lineup.

NorCal Regionals 2015 is scheduled for April 3-5 in Sacramento, California. Registration for this event will be open until March 27, so be sure to visit the official website for more details.

Get Your Head in the Game! Quick Ultra Street Fighter IV Tips to Keep in Mind as a Beginner

We all know what it’s like when you first decide to put effort into learning a fighting game. The endless hours of training mode practice, slogging through quarters at the arcade (or, more recently, putting up with the frustration of netplay), poring over information in your head frantically during a match–there’s a lot to remember during this early learning process.

In order to help folks who find themselves in the lower levels of fighting game competition, French group Les Super Madbros put together a great video of quick tips to keep in mind while you level up your game. Though many of these short lessons may seem obvious (block more, stop jumping, etc.), they are invaluable pieces of a larger mindset necessary to playing these titles at a decent level.

If you count yourself as a beginner or have a friend who has become interested in learning more, check out the video below and pass it along. Oh, and if you don’t speak French, be sure to turn those captions on.

Counter Fireball Onslaughts with Sakura in Ultra Street Fighter IV

There are few things more frustrating than fighting against an exceptional zoner and lacking the knowledge to avoid damage while still getting in range to land a hit of your own. Whether they make optimal use of well-placed normals or stick purely to the fireball approach, this situation can sour even the most casual session. With that in mind, it’s important to know how to deal with the plasma once it starts flying.

Most characters have a handful of options when it comes to dealing with projectiles, but Sakura may have the most, due simply to the amount of attacks she has with long periods of invulnerability as well as the angles of approach that she can take. In the video below, shano explores all of the fighter’s options for turning fireballs into huge damage opportunities.

Many of these options will be obvious to more experienced players, but shano has included some things, like a full screen kara-canceled EX Tatsu, that may not be part of everyone’s current game plan. New Sakura players should definitely check it out.

NetherRealm Studios’ John Edwards Talks Balance and Character Variation in Mortal Kombat X

MKX_Kitana_Variations_622_crop

The variation system, which gives each character three unique fighting styles with different movesets and priorities, is perhaps the biggest feature introduced by NetherRealm Studios in Mortal Kombat X. These allow characters to have different tools to deal with specific matchups and greatly expand the way they can be played by competitors.

Venture Beat’s Stephen Kleckner (also known in the fighting game community as Sosage) recently got a chance to talk to lead designer John Edwards about this new feature and as well as their reactions to how cast members ended up being ranked in the franchise’s previous installment.

Regarding Mortal Kombat 9’s balance, Edwards acknowledged the fact that creating a cast of characters with unique moves and tool will mean that every tier list will be surprising to some degree. No character is ever made to be top or bottom tier, they just fall into those positions based on how the game develops.

Additionally, Edwards stated that watching the game and its tier list develop and change over time as players develop new strategies is one of the “more enjoyable” aspects of competitive fighting games.

Regarding Mortal Kombat X’s variations, Edwards mentioned that one of the reasons for implementing this feature was to allow players more freedom of choice when it came to character selection. This way, a player who preferred a fighter would also likely be able to find a playstyle that they liked. That said, it does make the game harder to balance.

To read more on this and Edwards’ other insights on the balancing of both Mortal Kombat 9 and Mortal Kombat X, head on over to VentureBeat for the full interview.

Cody Gives Us His Take On Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Wakeup Option Select Grab

It seems that defensive wake up option selects involving throws are the talk of the town at the moment, so with this in mind, freeno0b put together a quick video showing off how Cody players can apply this strategy to their own game.

As you can see by checking out the input display in the video, the concept is pretty simple: just perform an EX Criminal Upper with an additional short input and you’re good to go. This option select will defend against throws and will toss out an EX Criminal Upper under all other circumstances.

This means that it’s not an answer for every situation, as an opponent who decides to respect Cody’s wakeup and block will be served up a free punish. It also loses to moves with extensive invulnerability frames, but hey, one option select can’t cover everything.

Mad Catz References Early Street Fighter IV Arcade Stick in Upcoming Tournament Edition 2 Variant

MCZ_USFIV_TE2-Rivals_622_crop

Back in the summer of 2009, Mad Catz and Capcom partnered to release their first limited edition variant of the Street Fighter IV Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition at San Diego Comic-Con. With only 250 ever made, this version of the original Tournament Edition arcade stick has now become a highly sought after item among aficionados and collectors.

Now, Mad Catz is looking back to that stick for their first exclusive model of the Tournament Edition 2. This RIVALS variant features an all-white casing, orange bezel, and orange and yellow Sanwa parts, just like the aforementioned Comic-Con release. Even the art, which is new, pays homage to the original’s design.

If you’re interested in grabbing one of these for yourself head on over to Mad Catz’ site to sign up and be notified when it goes on sale. Regional availability will be determined on this registration, so this is a good chance for folks outside of areas like the United States and Japan to show they want this and future limited edition sticks released in their neck of the woods.

Mad Catz’ RIVALS Tournament Edition 2, which is compatible with both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, will be available at select events and online this summer.

We’ve included all of the pertinent images below, so if you are worried about getting caught up in any more spoilers, stop reading here. Of course, as this is a Mortal Kombat game, you can also expect some blood; be wary if you are bothered by such things.
