Rush Hour Smash Celebrates Evo 2015’s Impressive Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Registration Numbers

Earlier this year, Apex 2015 showed the largest turnout for a Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament in the history of the game. Even with the GameCube title now into its teenage years, it was able to draw in over a thousand players. But when Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar released some early numbers for Evolution 2015 earlier this week, we saw that the tournament, which is still four months away, has already surpassed Apex’s entry numbers for Melee while also bringing in over a thousand players for the new Wii U iteration.

To help hype up the event and celebrate the series’ latest entry drawing such massive attention, False of Rush Hour Smash created a trailer to showcase some exciting plays from top competitors, including Mew2King, DKwill, and plenty more.

This is an exciting moment not only for the Smash scene, but the fighting game community as a whole. Check out the video below to see Rush Hour’s top-notch editing applied to a very different kind of project.

Evo 2015 is scheduled for July 17-19. More information is available through the official website.

Mortal Kombat X Will Not Allow Cross-Region Netplay

mkx-johnnycagesonyablade-622-crop

In a reply to fans on Twitter, Mortal Kombat X executive producer Shaun Himmerick has confirmed that the title’s online multiplayer will be region-locked.

One of the biggest disappointments with NetherRealm Studios’ previous fighting games was the fact that netplay was restricted by the version you purchased, meaning, for example, a player from Europe could not play with one from North America.

Other titles, like Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!!, have seen similar treatment, though the former was corrected with a post-launch patch.

This is certainly unfortunate news for players who were hoping that Mortal Kombat X would not have the same restriction as NetherRealm’s previous titles. Hopefully we’ll see it go the way of Persona in the future.

Mortal Kombat X will arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 14, with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases planned for sometime this summer.

This year Japan is getting a deeper involvement in the Capcom Pro Tour, starting with the Nine States Tournament 2015, a Ultra Street Fighter IV event organized by the Fukuoka Gamers Club (FGC). The event will be going down in Fukuoka prefecture of Kyushu (“Nine States”, roughly), an island in southwestern Japan. The singles tournament will function as both a ranking event in the Capcom Pro Tour, offering ranking points for top placement, singles competition, as well as a qualifier for Capcom Pro Tour Asia.

Nine States will of course feature some of the best players of Kyushu, including Pugera, Pepeday, Michael-tan and Dunhill, as well as the rest of Japan, like Itabashi Zangief, Shiro, Amiyu and Amiyu. South Korea will also be joining in the action, with INFILTRATION, POONGKO, hydeBUFFY, BIGDANMUL and DBKoopa slated to complete.

The action begins on Saturday with the 5on5 tournament then continues Sunday with the singles tournament. Tough Cookie TV will be providing a live stream of the event on Twitch.

Rocket Racoon, Spencer, and Super-Skrull Team Up in Marvelous Vikings’ Latest Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Exhibition

It’s been a while since we saw fallb0rn of the Marvelous Vikings’ show off new combos for his Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 team of choice, but the time since his last video release has not been wasted. In the footage below, you’ll see a lengthy tribute to his signature squad, which consists of Rocket Racoon, Spencer, and Super-Skrull.

Fallb0rn kicks things off with a combo that uses a staggering 8–yes, eight–hard tags to keep things going. With such a strong opening, it’s easy to expect a lot from the combos that follow, and the Swedish player doesn’t disappoint. He shows off strings that start from all sorts of situations, including Bionic Arm punishes and various lead-in hits from every character, demonstrating the synergy shared between this unlikely trio.

If you’re looking to get away from the world of Vergil, Doctor Doom, and the rest of the top tier crew, this may be the video for you.

Mr. Game & Watch Can Duck an Alarming Amount of Attacks in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

VGBootCamp owner and Mr. Game & Watch main Calvin “GimR” Lofton put out a video this morning showcasing some hilarious technology surrounding his character of choice in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

It seems that by simply ducking, the old-school Nintendo mascot can cause an alarming amount of attacks to whiff and allow himself a punish depending on the attack that sailed harmlessly overhead. Free Level 9 hammers, anyone?

Exactly what the flat fighter can dodge does depend on the character that he is fighting, but GimR shows that he is able to duck selected throws, tilts, specials, projectiles, and smashes; if you’re a Game & Watch player, or typically spend a lot of time fighting against one, be sure to check out the video below to get an idea of the applications this may have.

Arc System Works to Donate Part of March Earnings Towards Ongoing Tohoku Earthquake Relief Efforts

arcsystemworks-banner

Four years ago, Japan suffered one of its deadliest earthquakes to date. The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami left thousands dead, even more homeless, and was also cause of one of the worst nuclear power disasters in history.

To assist those who are still suffering from the effects of this catastrophe, Arc System Works recently announced that they will be donating a portion of their earnings from March to the ongoing relief effots. The specific amount and the charities who will be receiving aid have yet to be announced.

The disaster had far-reaching consequences even in the video game industry, with many development teams having to stop work on projects due to the effects of the disaster (such as Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s planned downloadable content, resulting in Ultimate’s release later that year).

We here at Shoryuken applaud Arc System Works for their generosity.
