Evo 2015 Surpasses Apex 2015 as History’s Largest Super Smash Bros. Melee Event

Even thirteen years and some months of life later, Super Smash Bros. Melee chugs along in the competitive circuit, experiencing dips and rise but continuing to be played at a point in its life where other games would have fallen by the wayside. It’s latest resurgence has perhaps been the most miraculous, as it saw the title played by 1,037 players at Apex 2015 earlier this year, making that event the largest tournament Melee has had since launch.

For a time, at least.

Earlier today, Evolution co-founder Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar announced that this year’s event has once again earned that illustrious title for itself, surpassing even the lofty heights set by the Smash community’s most important gathering. While an exact figure wasn’t stated, we do know that Melee reached 1,000 entrants just last month.

But that’s not all; newcomer Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is also doing exceedingly well as far as registration numbers are concerned, passing up the 1,000 player milestone alongside its older sibling and perennial favorite Ultra Street Fighter IV.

Evo 2015 is scheduled for July 17-19. More information is available through the official website.

Chun-Li Teams Up with Rocket Raccoon and Doctor Strange for Some Serious Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Combos

Eldon Moore has shown several times that he’s capable of making Chun-Li, Rocket Raccoon, and Doctor Strange pair well with plenty of characters in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. His long list of uploaded videos is a testament not only to his creative abilities with this unusual group of characters, but also to their own abilities as team players.

With all of these videos under his belt, which often pick and choose one or two of these three characters to include, Moore decided to go back to his own main team. It’s been a long time since he has showed them any love, but the wait seems to have been worth it.

Check out the video below to see a combo video that doesn’t even bother with a damage display because the numbers themselves don’t matter–only the empty health bar on the opponent does.

Street Fighter Battle Combination Brings Card Combat to Android Later This Month

It seems like every major fighting game franchise needs a mobile card game these days, and Capcom’s leading series is no exception. Street Fighter Battle Combination, which was first revealed back in 2013 before being subjected to a lengthy beta testing process, appears to be finally ready for public consumption with an interesting twist not seen in early announcements.

According to Siliconera, this Android title will feature multiple variations of the same character, for example bringing together Ryu’s Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III incarnations. Though, because the trailer doesn’t seem to feature much of this generation-hopping cast, it remains to be seen how much this will affect the overall gameplay.

Street Fighter Battle Combination will be available for Android on March 30, with a summer launch planned for iOS devices.

She-Hulk Adds Some New Partners to Her Practice Squad in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

She-Hulk may not be the most popular character in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but unlike most characters who rarely find their way into a tournament team, she has received a relatively steady flow of new technology since she fell out of favor in the move over to this latest iteration of the game.

Below, we’ve got a new video from e mc that’s all about getting the biggest numbers possible from the lady in green. With the help of some assists, She-Hulk can set up crumples for herself, pushing the damage to just shy of 900k for one bar.

And while it’s no surprise to see the green bruiser working with characters like Docters Strange and Doom, e mc makes use of Thor and Iron Man as well to keep things interesting.

Custom Move Showcase Looks Ahead to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s Possible Future

While there’s certainly a lot to enjoy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, custom moves give it quite a bit of legroom outside the basic gameplay mechanics. These optional special attacks tweak the toolsets afforded to each character, allowing players more freedom in the way they choose to approach their mains.

So far, a definitive customs ruleset has yet to be adopted by the wider community, but Evo 2015’s tentative acceptance of these alternate moves looks to be the perfect discussion-stirring catalyst. Fortunately, there are some dedicated players out there capable of providing a sort of time machine for us to peer into the future and see what these attacks bring to the table, combo-wise.

One such person is TheRealCartererer, who recently released a brand new video highlighting the strings custom moves make possible for Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Link, Ganondorf, Falco, Jigglypuff, Mega Man, and a host of other cast members.

And even if you aren’t interested in this mechanic, you at least get to see Diddy Kong get beat up for ten minutes. That’s a win-win in my book!

Download BradyGames’ Ultra Street Fighter IV Bible for Free

Back when Ultra Street Fighter IV first launched, BradyGames released a rather comprehensive guide that included data on frame data, hitboxes, and more for the entire cast. Now, Prima Games is offering a digital download of this resource on their website, completely free of charge.

While much of the information is out of date due to a few post-release patches, this “bible” still serves as a great foundation for expanding your knowledge of the gameplay mechanics and character basics.

For a full look at what’s changed in Ultra Street Fighter IV since this guide was released, check out our previous report on the subject.

Ultra Street Fighter IV Comes Up Big, Guilty Gear Narrowly Trails Marvel in Early Final Round 18 Registration Numbers

Ahead of this weekend’s event, the organizers behind Final Round 18 have released some early registration numbers for the various fighters that make up its official lineup.

While Ultra Street Fighter IV obviously tops the list due to Final Round’s status as a Capcom Pro Tour premier event, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- round out the top three, only separated from each other by a couple of players.

After that, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 comes in at a respectable fourth thanks to the south’s continued support of the Bandai Namco franchise, and the hype behind Super Smash Bros. for Wii U gives it a spot in the five most populated titles.

Unfortunately, it’s not all good news. Injustice: Gods Among Us continues to see flagging competitive numbers, joined by King of Fighters XIII as the two games with the lowest numbers.

All this said, Final Round 18 allows players to register at the door, so it’s possible we’ll see some shifts in these statistics come Friday.

Final Round 18 is scheduled for March 20-22 in Atlanta, Georgia. More details are available through the official website.

Why Doesn’t Street Fighter’s Guile Have Eyebrows?

Okay, I apologize if the following paragraphs are a little incoherent, because I’m kinda losing it over here.

Street Fighter has been around since 1987. Guile was introduced sometime in 1991. My love affair with the franchise began in…oh, let’s say 2000, just to be safe. That means, for all you math whizzes out there, that I’ve been exposed to the muscled American fighter for about fourteen years and change.

And, in all that time, I never noticed dude is completely missing eyebrows.

The video above, the latest in an Animation Domination series that puts lyrics to musical numbers, has completely opened my eyes. I feel like my whole life has been a farce.

Seriously, check out every piece of official Street Fighter art. I’ll wait. You’ll find Guile’s iconic hair-do, his chiseled jawline, maybe even an American flag tattoo–but no eyebrows.

Like, what purpose could that even serve? Feel free to discuss this in the comments, I need to go lie down.
