Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Soldiers On in Japan, Almost 900 Competitors Attending MASTERCUP.7 This Weekend

Despite seeing diminishing numbers in the United States, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 continues to pull huge crowds in other regions, most notably Japan. With signups for this weekend’s MASTERCUP.7 closed as of September 21, we now have a good look at how attendance for the latest installment of the annual tournament series has shaken out.

According to the event’s official website, 176 teams have registered to compete, meaning a total of 880 players are ready to throw down in the popular 3D fighter.

Since its inception in 2007, MASTERCUP has become one of Japan’s premier Tekken events, regularly drawing enormous crowds of both competitors and spectators. In fact, attendance has continued to grow even over the past few iterations; 625 took part in the competition at MASTERCUP.5, a number that grew to 750 at the following event.

The scene’s dedication to MASTERCUP is also reflected in the level of talent these tournaments regularly exhibit. The sixth installment saw players like FRB|AO, Nobi, Yuu, Genkids, and many more come together to compete, resulting in some of the fiercest competition Tekken Tag Tournament 2 has seen since launch.

It’s unclear whether the game’s continued success in Japan can be attributed to the surviving game centers (they use the Unlimited arcade version), the country’s relatively consolidated fighting game community, or some other factor, but one thing is for sure: it’s great to see competition, no matter the title, continue to thrive.

MASTERCUP.7 is scheduled to take place this Sunday, November 3, at 8 AM JST. A live stream will be provided through Twitch.

VrRaiden Demonstrates Potential Uses for Sol’s Yellow Roman Canceled Dragon Install in Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-

While Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- isn’t out on home consoles yet, that hasn’t stopped players from using the PlayStation 4 demo to try and figure out some tricks. On such player is VrRaiden, who recently shared this video showing how you can Yellow Roman Cancel the startup of Sol’s Dragon Install in a variety of situations.

For those not familiar with Xrd’s mechanics, players can Roman Cancel out of the starting frames of a move in the game, resulting in a “Yellow” colored Roman Cancel that only takes 25% of their meter.

What’s interesting, however, is that Dragon Install has invincibility frames right at the start, even before the super flash. By canceling it beforehand, players can take advantage of the invincibility and consume less meter in the process.

As detailed in VrRaiden’s video below, this can lead to some interesting setups.

MOR|Axe Analyzes His Near-Perfect Super Smash Bros. Melee Match Against GC|Silentwolf at Evo 2014

Without a doubt, one of the most hype matches at Evo 2014 was the Super Smash Bros. Melee top eight bout between Mortality’s Axe and Silentwolf of GameClucks. In it, the former was able to “four stock” the latter, a term used by the Smash community so signify a player’s ability to defeat their opponent without losing any of their own lives.

And if that wasn’t enough, Axe’s Pikachu took down Silentwolf’s Fox in less than a minute.

Interestingly enough, Axe doesn’t consider this match as representing him at his best. Rather, he attributes his performance to making some good calls at crucial moments in the match.

If you want to check out the full match without commentary, you’ll find it here.

Learn Some Useful Frame Trap Applications for Ultra Street Fighter IV with EG|K-Brad

Kenneth “K-Brad” Bradley of Evil Geniuses recently began offering online training services, and some of the footage from these sessions has made it onto Cross Counter TV.

One particularly helpful lesson that has made its way to on-demand status features K-Brad going into great detail about how to properly perform throw techs, the advantages of and differences between standing and crouch-teching, and how frame traps play into all of that.

If you’re a seasoned veteran of the fighting genre, it’s doubtful that any of this information will come as a surprise to you, but if you only recently got involved with the greatest gaming genre there is, there’s much to be learned from the 20-minute lesson included below.

YouTube Rolls Out Support for 60 FPS Video Playback

Video enthusiasts, rejoice! Today, YouTube has followed through on their plans to add support for 60 frames-per-second footage to their hugely popular platform. While this is obviously great for anyone using or planning to use the service, who cares about cute cats and skydiving videos when there’s fighting games to be watched?

(Full disclosure: I’m still very much interested in cute cats, please include them in your combo videos.)

At this point, there are still a few stipulations. First off, you need to be using Google’s Chrome browser to access videos of this caliber, and be sure to bump up the quality of the footage you’re checking out to YouTube’s high-definition options (720p, 1080p, etc.) if you aren’t already doing so.

Okay, enough words. While it doesn’t appear as if this bump has been applied to older videos uploaded to the website, new gameplay footage has started to make its way online. Feel free to check out the beautiful Mario Kart 8 video below (hey, Mario Kart’s been at Evo!) and let us know what you think. We’ll be sure to highlight some fighting game footage as soon as it becomes available.

Though not a fighting game, watching the above footage should make it super clear why this is a big deal for our community. The added smoothness and clarity afforded by the 60 frames-per-second video will allow viewers to see the game much closer to how it appears in real life and, hopefully, learn a few more things in the process.

Full Punish Training Program Aims to Teach Ultra Street Fighter IV Players Proper Defense and Offense

Thanks to a newly-announced Ultra Street Fighter IV training program called Full Punish, there will soon be even more reason to favor the PC version of Capcom’s current fighting giant. The application works as well as, if not better (much better in some cases) than a human acting as the training dummy. It’s also worlds ahead of trying to convince yourself that “randomly” recording these setups on the dummy yourself is a good way to train.

Been there, tried that, memorized the sequence.

Through the use of Full Punish, the training dummy can be set to perform various attacks in a truly randomized order to help practice defending or, as the name of the program suggests, full punishing whatever setup or approach option has been giving you trouble. In the case of the brief demo footage below, Rufus has been set to perform a wide array of tick throw setups, some of which mix in divekicks to blow up traditional crouch-teching.

As demonstrated, Ryu’s best solution to this pressure involves adding another layer to the crouch-tech option select by pressing Strong as well. Now he’ll tech throws as well as beat out those pesky divekicks with a c.MP. Ryu players that regularly face off against Rufus are probably well aware of this, but for those of us who only face the rock opera lover rarely, it’s great to finally have a way to practice not only the best way to beat this kind of pressure, but to train for proper punish timing in a controlled environment.

Not yet convinced that you need to give Full Punish a whirl once it releases? This is only the first of many upcoming demo reels, so stay tuned to check some more footage in the coming days.

Capcom Focuses on fLoE, YBK|Jayce the Ace, and CJ Truth in Latest Player Spotlights

With Capcom Cup growing closer and closer, the folks over at Capcom have released three more player spotlights.

While they may not be playing in the main event, Ari “fLoE” Weintraub, YUBIKEN’s Jason “Jayce the Ace” Nghe, and Chris “CJ Truth” Jayson provide an interesting at the overall fighting game community from two very different perspectives: the grizzled veteran and the hungry up-and-comers.

All three videos touch on topics similar to past interviews, like each player’s favorite game, greatest achievement, and worst loss, but also delve into more personal topics. Weintraub, for example, talks a bit about his love for Vampire Savior as well as his tendency to choke in big tournament matches, while Nghe touches on his respect for Justin Wong’s patience.
