Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike tutorial roundup – Anti-air, okizeme, juggles, and piano inputs

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection has just released, and I’ve been getting endless requests to do some tutorials for my area of expertise: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. Despite being almost twenty years old, 3rd Strike is probably more popular now than it has ever been in the past, largely due to the massive influx of new players since 2008, as well as its cult following and its endurance in Japanese arcades. In light of the new release, I’ve prepared a few guides to help new players get into the old engine.

First, I have a guide on anti-air. The presence of air parry in SFIII means that jump-ins, rather than being a punish scenario in which the grounded player can always win clean, are instead a mix-up scenario requiring careful consideration from both players. Jump-ins still lock the jumper in a telegraphed arc and remove their ability to block — so it’s still a disadvantageous position, but it’s a far more complex position than in any other main line Street Fighter title. This seems to be the area where players most frequently get stuck when attempting to enter this game, so I highly recommend this one.

Next, I made a guide on okizeme, or the wakeup mix-up. The presence of wakeup parry, the ability to use parry to shut down safe jumps, and the overwhelming presence of strong lows and overheads mean the wakeup mix-up is extremely strong in SFIII. However, unlike SFIV and SFV, here the person on the ground has a chance to do enormous damage with the right read. This means the attacker needs to apply heavy mix-ups and occasionally check his swing, so again it’s quite an elaborate and complex scenario as compared to other Street Fighter titles.

I also have a video on the juggle engine of the game. This mostly only matters if you play Oro or Urien, but elaborate knowledge of the game’s juggle system gives players a little edge on their combo opportunities, which can occasionally make or break a round. It’s also a great opportunity to show off! This video is more documentation of the engine itself than a tutorial, though it is helpful for certain characters.

Finally, I’ve put together a little guide on how to use piano inputs to easily hit one-frame links into supers, which is a common confirming route in SFIII. Piano motions are not commonly used in modern Street Fighter games, but they allow for consistently timed specials and supers in many older titles, and because it’s an execution trick it’s not visible in most arcade footage, so I don’t think it’s common knowledge anymore.

I’ve got many other Street Fighter III primers in the works, so subscribe to the ShoryukenTube YouTube channel if you don’t want to miss out!

Teresa from Japan and Daru from Korea clash at the Combo Breaker 2018 Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 grand finals

It was an emotional finish for both viewers and participants of this year’s Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 competition at Combo Breaker 2018. The Illinois tournament attracted a rich assortment of personalities, from local players, to casual competitors, to sponsored and international players. The Korean sensation, Daru I-no, was definitely one of the players expected to rise to the top. He met Teresa — a player he often meets at Japan’s Mikado arcade — in a tenacious grand finals set.

Teresa, who mains Jam, was playing incredibly well that day. He beat Daru in the Winners Semifinals, popping off, and sending him to the losers’ side. He doesn’t normally beat the I-no master. Teresa continued this hot streak in the grand finals, playing at his very best. This set turned out to be a grueling and emotional battle, as Daru reset the bracket. Teresa dropped a key combo, which didn’t help his confidence. Later on, post the reset, Teresa felt the momentum break as his stick malfunctioned.

It’s a must-see set. Look forward to our interviews with both players this week, and don’t forget to check out the Combo Breaker 2018 results page to see how other tournaments ended.

WWE Superstars Xavier Woods and the Miz fight it out for the latter’s belts in the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

Austin Creed, better known as WWE Superstar Xavier Woods, is no stranger to fighting games. The New Day member has attended and competed at a number of fighting game events, and also has an on-again-off-again rivalry with NJPW’s Kenny Omega.

Now, with the release of the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Creed has put up a new video on his Up Up Down Down channel with him playing the game against fellow WWE Superstar Mike “the Miz” Mizanin.

Now, there’s a bit of history behind this match. Two years ago, the Creed and the Miz faced off in Street Fighter II — which resulted in the latter losing, and giving up his WWE Intercontinental Championship belt to the former. Now, in this new match, the Miz aims to earn that belt back. However, should he lose, he will once again be forced to give up his belt — this time the WWE United States Championship belt that he currently holds.

Will the A-lister finally triumph, or will the cereal-shilling trombone player once again run away with another belt? Check out the video below to find out.

The Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection is available now for PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC.

hfblade shows off the pile-bunker power of Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!’s Zenia

Anime fighting games tend to get pigeonholed for their screen munching projectiles and air-based footsies. For those that like the mental game of getting in, staying in, and punching until there’s nothing left to punch, they will likely enjoy Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!!‘s Zenia.

Armed with frame traps, a command dash, and some decent air-unblockables, the pilebunker wielding Zenia hits hard and takes control with some of the game’s most powerful pressure. If any of that sounds interesting to you, then hfblade‘s latest video above is a good place to start learning combos!

Next BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Arc Nama stream set for Friday, June 15th

The Japanese website for the upcoming BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle has recently been updated, revealing that the next Arc Nama stream will be held on Friday, June 15th. This will be an interesting broadcast, as it will be the first monthly stream following the title’s full release, making its potential contents all the more interesting.

Even though this month’s stream was the first to not feature any character reveals, and the 31-character lineup for Evo 2018 has already been set, we still have nine DLC characters (whom will comprise Cross Character Packs 4-6) left to be revealed. Recent datamining of the Nintendo Switch’s open online beta has indicated the remaining fighters to be BlazBlue’s Izayoi, Nine The Phantom and Mai Natsume, Persona 4 Arena’s Mitsuru Kirijo, Akihiko Sanada and Labrys, and Under Night In-Birth’s Yuzuriha Sougetsu, Merkava, and Mika Returna. There have also been rumblings of Senran Kagura’s Asuka and Yumi potentially Crossing Fate with the four core franchises of BBTAG (though that has been denied). While we currently have no idea what ASW plans to show off, there’s a strong possibility that Cross Character Pack 4 could be revealed.

As always, you can catch the action at twitch.tv/arcsystemworks at 4:00 AM PT (6:00 AM CT, 7:00 AM ET).

What are you hoping to see revealed on the upcoming stream? Give us your thoughts and predictions in the comments below.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle will be released for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Steam in Japan this Thursday, May 31st, with a North American release on the same platforms following next Tuesday, June 5th. A European release by PQube for PS4 and Switch will drop on Friday, June 22nd.

SNK’s next The King of Fighters game is a mobile RPG

SNK has just announced a new The King of Fighters game, and it’s likely not what fans are expecting. The King of Fighters All-Star is a mobile role-playing game for Android and iOS. Developed in conjunction with Netmarble, The King of Fighters All-Star is described as a “a mobile action RPG with easy-to-use controls that enable the flashy skill actions and exciting combo actions of The King of Fighters series.”

Additionally, they state that fighters from The King of Fighters ’94 all the way to The King of Fighters XIII will make an appearance in the game, and will be presented “without change in their original form and with the highest level of graphics quality.” This seems to indicate that sprites from these previous games will be used in this new mobile spin-off.

Now, this isn’t SNK’s first foray into making an RPG spin-off of one of their fighting franchises. They’ve been doing this as far back as 1997’s Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits: Bushidō Retsuden, which was a spin-off RPG based on their Samurai Shodown series.

As for this new game, we’ll learn more on June 15, when Netmarble has promised to reveal more details about it. In the meantime, check out this teaser trailer.
