Novriltataki explores what keeps older games in the spotlight

The fighting game community is one of the most unique communities in competitive gaming, in that the community can keep older titles not only alive, but near the forefront of the spotlight. With games such as Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Vampire Savior, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Sailor Moon S still being played competitively — and Capcom adding pot bonuses for games tied to their Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection — this is only possible by community interest in these titles.

But how does this happen? Novriltataki, in his most recent video, postulates that the core system mechanics of older titles allow for varied styles of gameplay, which add to their appeal.

Learn to use the King of Dinosaurs’ buffed crouching heavy punch with this new The King of Fighters XIV tutorial

With its recent 3.0 patch to The King of Fighters XIV, the King of Dinosaurs received a number of changes meant to patch some holes in his gameplan. Among these, however, is one that some players may be overlooking: the expanded hit box on his crouching hard punch.

As demonstrated in the video below by APE OF THE UNIVERSE, expanding the hitbox on crouching hard punch (or “2C” in numeric notation) gives the wrestler formerly known as Tizoc better hit confirms. He gains him more damage from further out, whereas prior to the patch, he had to go for sub-optimal combo routes from these ranges. This is on top of having a much more lenient close range confirm into Quick Max.

In addition to this however, the expanded hit box also gives King of Dinosaurs a better anti-air option. Prior to the buff, he had to go for a preemptive air-to-air to stop jump ins. With the buff, he can now use crouching hard punch to anti-air instead, especially since it has auto-guard frames.

The Hadou guest stars on the Best of V Show and discusses Combo Breaker 2018 entrants

Combo Breaker 2018 is approaching us. In just a little under two weeks, the biggest FGC tournament in the Midwest region will reveal new champions, rivals, and opportunities. The Twitch show dedicated to fighting games, “Best of V,” took the opportunity to bring the main person responsible for the event under the microphone.

The guys start out by talking about the final registration numbers for Combo Breaker.

They point out that Tekken 7 and Street Fighter V have a high number of unique attendants — that is, people who are registered solely for those games. On the other hand, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike has two people coming exclusively to compete in it. They also mention a pretty high number for Mortal Kombat 9, the game that brought the Hadou into the FGC.

A notable announcement occurred with Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]. The Hadou revealed that there will be a special 4 vs. 4 exhibition that will take place on the main stage and on stream.

Other than that, the participants continued to discuss how Combo Breaker serves the FGC, catering to all kinds of players, continuing the tradition of certain events like the Mystery Game Tournament. The Hadou’s ultimate advice to other tournament organizers? “Make your staff bigger.”

Canada Cup Masters Series 2018 results

Masters Series comes back with a vengeance!

Canada Cup Masters Series returned to Calgary, Alberta this past weekend, with some impressive displays of skill from both locals of Edmonton and Calgary, other Canadian players, and a batch of pro players that traveled in to strut their stuff. Hosted by Lap Chi Duong, the event offered competition in ten different fighting titles, and took an interesting twist by holding the Street Fighter V top 8 as a round-robin, rather than completing the double-elimination bracket.

Players will be able to try out Super Smash Bros. for Switch at several tournament events in Japan this summer

Once the Invitational is done, the game will gradually be placed into the hands of eager fans.

Shortly after the Super Smash Bros. Invitational rocks E3 this year, Nintendo’s latest entry in their platform fighter franchise will see a playable demo at a number of tournament events in Japan this summer:

  • Rage 2018 Summer on June 17, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba
  • Jisedai World Hobby Fair 2018 Summer from June 23 to 24, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba
  • Jump Victory Carnival 2018 Tokyo on July 16, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba
  • Jump Victory Carnival 2018 Osaka on July 22, at Intex Osaka

So far, only these events have been revealed as places where fans can try the game out — so far. Nintendo brought a playable demo of Pokkén Tournament DX to Evo 2017, however, so it’s reasonable to expect that to be a possibility for Smash this year at Evo 2018.

UDON’s fun-in-the-sun special is returning for 2018 — and your work could be part of it.

Fans of swimsuits and Street Fighter can look forward to another pin-up collection from UDON Entertainment this year: the Street Fighter Summer Sports Special, a comic artwork compilation featuring the ladies (and sometimes men) of Street Fighter and its related franchises will be arriving sometime in August 2018. And if you want to be a part of the fun, UDON is calling for artwork submissions for the collection:

We’re looking for your summer-themed Street Fighter artwork – swimsuits, the beach, sports – anything with a summer theme is welcome! So sharpen your pencils, warm up your drawing tablets, and show some summer love for STREET FIGHTER!

Lord Knight and Cloud805 voted into Dragon Ball FighterZ Summit of Power; current standings

It’s time to summon Shenron to make that final push for your favorites!

The final day of voting for Beyond The Summit’s Dragon Ball FighterZ Summit of Power is now upon us, with two more players joining Echo Fox’s dekillsage in the Summit House. With 15,045 Votes, UYU|Cloud805 and Lord Knight, who scored 13,513 Votes, have both officially joined the SoP lineup. Unfortunately, IG|Zer0q (3,114 Votes) and PAG|LostSoul (3,583 Votes) have been eliminated. This has brought us down to the final four competitors, with only two spots remaining in the Summit lineup. As of this writing, the standings are as follows:

  • CLN|Yohosie – 13,895 Votes – Will be invited to Summit at end of the final round
  • PONOS|Moke – 12,184 Votes – Will be invited to Summit at end of the final round
  • PsrK|BeyondToxin – 11,959 Votes – In danger of being eliminated
  • NRG|Supernoon – 7,595 Votes – In danger of being eliminated

Voting ends today, Wednesday, May 16th, at 2:00 PM PT (4:00 PM CT, 5:00 PM ET), so be sure to get those votes in for a big final push. The final S0P spot will be decided by a Last Chance Qualifier held at Combo Breaker 2018 May 25-27 in St. Charles, Illinois. Talent lineup information has also been released. The Summit of Power takes place June 8-10th in Los Angeles, California, with a prize pool of over $10,000 up for grabs!

Check out Ragna and Jin combos & Ruby mix-ups in this fresh BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle roundup

Though the online beta test has ended for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, players can continue to practice either in a limited four-character trial version, or the 20-character demo if they pre-ordered the game. The results impress more by the day, as users around the world discover extremely flashy combinations and innovative team plays.

Starting out with the basics, take a look at how much damage you can do with Ragna and Jin solo. While teamwork is important, it’s also key to know individual combos in the game. Of course, you have to spend increasing amounts of super meter to extend the combos and increase the damage.

Here’s a quick example of how Ruby can mix-up the opponent by calling in an assist but crossing up with her speedy teleports.

The above combo is a seriously impressive sequence from Ruby and Weiss that shows how well Arc System Works translated the anime into 2D fighting game action.

ARIKA shows off gameplay of Fighting EX Layer’s Shadowgeist, Skullomania, Sanane, Doctrine Dark, Darun Mister, Kairi, & Hokuto

For those hungry for some more Fighting EX Layer action, here’s some great news. ARIKA has dropped a new gameplay video showing off some fights between some of the game’s cast.

The video below showcases fights between a number of classic characters in Fighting EX Layer. The video starts with Skullomania taking on Shadowgiest, followed by Sanane, then we have Doctrine Dark grappling with Darun Mister, before finally concluding with the siblings Kairi and Hokuto.

Fighting EX Layer is coming to PlayStation 4 on this June.

Unannounced Pokkén Tournament DX patch buffs Blastoise, DLC supports

Without any fanfare or warning, Pokkén Tournament DX players were surprised to find a software update was required for their Nintendo Switch if they wanted to play online last night. Although no notes came with this patch — which updates the game to version 1.3.1 — the hardworking fans at PokkénArena were able to find that the small update beefs up some of the latest DLC characters, and removes some glitches.

Bug Fixes

Blastoise

  • 2Y increased clash priority
  • 6Y causes a hard knock-down
  • 4Y increased knock-back on block and hit.

Supports

  • Mega Rayquaza’s charge time reduced from 40 seconds to 10 seconds.
  • Celebi now launches when shifting from Field Phase to Duel Phase.

While I personally mourn the loss of the situational and awesome “Thermodynamic” glitch, the patch is largely a great step in buffing some rarely-used supports and giving a little more weight to Blastoise’s previously weak mid-range game.
