Unique character choices are abound in the most recent Super Street Fighter II Turbo GameSpot Versus event

GameSpot Versus and their weekly East vs. West battle is one of the most notable events to watch for a Super Street Fighter II Turbo fan. With top players and unique play styles, this event always delivers on hype.

This week’s event did just that — not only in names such as Tomo and TMF, but in character diversity. This tournament’s featured characters are those that rarely see the light of day in competition, such as Boxer and O. Honda. We also see a rare glimpse of O. Sagat — a character that is “soft banned” in Japan, but completely legal in the west.

Dragon Ball FighterZ tournament cancelled at Anime Ascension due to “unforeseen circumstances”

Aksys Games released a concerning statement regarding their upcoming, annual Anime Ascension tournament. Unfortunately, the February 2019 event won’t be running Dragon Ball FighterZ, despite earlier promises. If you’ve been aiming to compete in, you might have to change your itinerary.

The publisher did not disclose the reason, however, the community overwhelmingly points to Toei Animation, who owns the rights to the series, and is notorious for being very protective of their intellectual property.

The decision is a controversial one for fighting game fans for at least two counts: for one, many players, such as top player Yohosie, were set to compete in DBFZ at the event:

Secondarily, this seems to be setting a concerning precedent for DBFZ players: they are worried that the game will only be allowed to play at the World Tour tournaments. The title failed to make it into Evo Japan despite it’s enormous popularity, and was pulled in November at DreamHack Atlanta.

We will update the story if an official statement regarding this situation appears.

Bandai Namco Entertainment to reveal new trailers for Jump Force and Dragon Ball FighterZ at Jump Festa 2019 this weekend

Could a Season 2 announcement be on the horizon?

Last week, Bandai Namco Entertainment revealed its full lineup of console and smartphone games that will be playable and on display at this weekend’s Jump Festa 2019, which takes place December 22nd and 23rd in Chiba, Japan.

Jump Festa is a yearly event for Weekly Shonen Jump, where the latest merchandise, games, manga, and anime for their various franchises is on display. Most notably for Bamco, is their upcoming 3D 3V3 are fighter Jump Force, which is set to be playable at the event and have a new trailer revealed at the expo. With the game’s February 15th release date fast-approaching, we’ve been treated to several big reveals, with Black Clover’s AstaDragon Ball’s Trunks, One Piece’s Boa Hancock, Bleach’s Renji Abarai, and My Hero Academia’s Izuku “Deku” Midoriya, all recently being revealed, on top of a brand new story trailer. YonkouProductions recently Tweeted that, “we aren’t even close” to the end of the roster, so it will be exciting to see which new heroes and villains join the fray.

Dragon Ball FighterZ will also be playable at the event with a new trailer also set to be released. With the Dragon Ball FighterZ  World Tour entering its final stretch, it’s highly likely that we could be seeing the announcement of a second Season of characters. Last year, we saw the reveal of Goku Black, Hit, and Beerus at the event.

Prominent fighting game leaker Dasvergeben made some posts on GameFAQS two months ago about a possible Season 2 lineup, stating, “Jiren is part of it. Ultra Instinct Goku apparently is too,” and that, “prior to the announcement of the Super Dragon Ball Heroes anime, I heard that Super Saiyan 4 Goku would be part of Season 2, and Gogeta would as well. Aside from those four characters, I heard that Season 2 is going to be bigger than Season 1. Probably means ten characters instead of eight this time.” He also notes that he hasn’t spoken to a previous source that informed him that Raditz and Zarbon would be part of Season 1, but wouldn’t be surprised if they were eventually pushed out for Android 17 and Cooler, and could show up in this next batch of characters, as there would be less of a chance for people to bemoan them taking up space.

It certainly seems like we’ll be in for some big news soon, with Dragon Ball FighterZ set to go even further beyond to the next level of power. (Hopefully we can also get a Tournament of Power stage, too.)

Would you be happy to see Jiren, Ultra Instinct Goku, Super Saiyan 4 Goku, Gogeta, Raditz, and Zarbon, potentially join DBFZ in a second FighterZ Pass, or would you prefer other mighty warriors? Give us your wishlists in the comments below, and stay tuned to Shoryuken, for full coverage of all the Jump Festa news.

Omen of Sorrow announces free DLC character Erzébet Bathory for January 2019, future DLC plans

Omen of Sorrow‘s Erzébet Bathory was always a likely choice for the first DLC character: she features somewhat prominently in its story mode and was one of the most requested characters upon release. Her announcement today as the first of AOne Games’s “Season 1” DLC characters may not be a surprise, but the fact that she’s absolutely free, is:

On top of that, AOne Games intends to release all future DLC characters for free, as well. It’s pure speculation, but the glyph graphic at the end of  Erzébet’s trailer above indicates that we have three more DLC characters on the way. Not bad!

ZeRo details the parry mechanic in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in this tutorial video

With the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — and the recovery frames added to exiting shield — powershielding has become less pragmatic. But the newly-found parry mechanic out of shield has gained massive prominence thanks to the frame advantage — similar to Street Fighter III‘s parry system — given to you if you execute it.

With the input window of the parry being tight, ZeRo explains exactly how the system works, and even gives pointers on how to practice it before taking it up against real opponents. He also explains that it is not necessarily a mechanic you want to abuse on every single move, but will help you take advantage of the depth of the Ultimate system.

rooflemonger ends the 12 Days of DBFZ Tech-Mas with Android 16 block strings, Super Sayan Vegeta combos and more

Also featuring a “Christmas Miracle” for Broly!

Due to having to visit his family for the holidays earlier than expected, rooflemonger has had to unfortunately cut his 12 Days of DBFZ Tech-Mas series a few days short, but has still provided us with a stocking stuffed with some great Dragon Ball FighterZ tech and tidbits.

First up, are some post-Super Dragon Rush setups for Bardock, utilizing Super Jump Installs that can dramatically increase the Low-Class Saiyan warrior’s damage output before landing a Snapback. However, it is corner-exclusive.

Next, we have some blockstring pressure from everyone’s favorite Super Saiyan 3 Fused rat-boy, Gotenks!

Moving on, we’ve got some fantastic mid-screen combos and Saibamen resets for the Great Nappa, most of which are now only possible due to his recent buffs in last month’s balance patch. However, this does require Gotenks’s Galactic Doughnut Assist and only works with the Medium Saibamen.

To continue, rooflemonger brings us some unseeable, unreachable mixups with Earth’s strongest human Krillin, utilizing his Level 3, Scattering Energy Wave.

For the abrupt finale of Tech-Mas, we have some optimal corner combos for Super Saiyan Vegeta utilizing multiple reps of his Interceptor Kick, as well as some Android 16 block strings, and a “Christmas Miracle” for Broly that’s sure to brighten your day.

You can also check out the first three Days of Tech-Mas, which featured Broly corner pressure setups, a Fused Zamasu tag glitch, and some Android 21 mixup options after her air Level 3, thanks to buffs in the recent patch.

Shut down NieR: AutoMata’s 2B in SoulCalibur VI with this punishment guide

NieR: Automata‘s 2B launched this week in SoulCalibur VI and she’s brought a whole new world of long, rule-breaking strings along with her to the meta. This is a character prepared to knowledge check you to death with high damage gimmicks, stance cancels, and more — but if you do your homework, you can pick up a lot of damage from her wild movelist.

While Talim is used as the base character for  FyreNecromancer‘s latest demonstration video, this guide is valuable information for players of any character. With this visual guide — which breaks down 2B’s whole toolkit — you can clearly see that she’s swamped with a number of -12 moves. Between that and knowing what your character’s options are versus stance transitions, there’s a lot you can do to confine 2B’s belligerent movelist.

Brawlhalla issues patch notes on their very holiday-themed 3.34 patch

Brawlhalla is gearing up for the hoidays, and what better gift to give than a new patch for their players. This patch also features some very festive themes, including new snow effects, holiday-themed character skins, and a new play mode which features a snowball fight.

But off of the aesthetic side of the patch, the gameplay has been tweaked with several weapons being buffed and nerfed, bare-handed combatants also receiving some changes, and several characters seeing buffs on their damage and blowback from the previous version.
