Big E Gaming announces April Annihilation, a new tournament replacing Winter Brawl in 2019

With the completion of Winter Brawl 12, Big E Gaming has announced the end of the Winter Brawl series and the launch of a new event, April Annihilation. Speaking before the finals of Dragon Ball Fighter Z at Winter Brawl on Sunday, Eric “BigE” Smalls said the decision to create a new event later in the year will provide more separation from Northeast Championships, the organization’s longest running tournament series, and potentially attract more sponsorship from fighting game pro tours.

April Annihilation is currently scheduled for April 12 to 14, 2019 at the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia-Cherry Hill in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. As a part of the announcement, Big E Gaming put together a tribute to some of Winter Brawl’s most memorable moments through the years and thanked the volunteers and sponsors who helped make the tournament possible.

Since its inception in 2015, the North American Capcom Pro Tour has launched in March with Final Round and NorCal Regionals but there has not been a consistent CPT event in April. Due to release timings last year, the 2017 Injustice 2 Pro Series and Tekken World Tour started in May and June respectively.

Big E Gaming organizes four major tournaments a year: Northeast Championships, Summer Jam, The Fall Classic (alongside the Final Round team) and now April Annihilation. Of those four, only Summer Jam is a part of the Capcom Pro Tour as a ranking event. For more information on April Annihilation and upcoming events from Big E Gaming, which include local Philadelphia tournaments, be sure to follow on Twitter and check their website for registration details.

See Shadowgeist, Blair and Jack in these Fighting EX Layer character trailers

Following ARIKA’s livestream yesterday where they revealed their target release date for Fighting EX Layer, the studio have released two new character trailers — showing off Blair Dame, Jack (formerly known as Cracker Jack) and Shadowgeist.

While Blair looks quite similar to her Street Fighter EX/Fighting Layer incarnation, Jack has seen a major redesign, presumably to avoid any legal trouble with the famous snack food. Rather than a Vegas bouncer, Jack’s new look has him dressed as a rodeo cowboy, complete with spurs, ten-gallon hat and a lasso. He’s still got his trusty baseball bat though, bringing the old girl to bear for one of his supers.

As for the vigilante Shadowgeist, he’s retained his tokusatsu-esque costume, complete with cape and Minus Energy power belt. Like fellow superhero Skullomania, Shadowgeist has retained his Raging Demon-esque super, the Death Dream. At the end of his trailer, two silhouettes can be seen behind him, relating to the two remaining characters that will join Fighting EX Layer‘s launch roster. With one silhouette wielding a staff and the other a rifle of some kind, these two fighters may be Nanase and Sharon from Street Fighter EX 2.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has become an Xbox Play Anywhere title; receives digital price reduction

While Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will not be a main stage title at this summer’s Evo 2018, the crossover title is still going strong at many other tournaments, and now has a bit more positive news heading its way — particularly to fans of Microsoft gaming platforms.

Windows Central announced today that MvC:I has now received Xbox Play Anywhere support. Established in September 2016, this service allows players to purchase a title digitally on either the Xbox One or Windows 10 PC platform only once to play it on both systems — with all game saves, Achievements, and DLC add-ons carrying over between the two. This makes MvC:I Capcom’s second title to achieve this status, alongside Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The title has also seen a price drop on the digital storefront, with the base game now going for a mere $39.99, as opposed to the previous price of $59.99.

This is certainly positive news for the franchise, and reaffirms that Capcom remains committed to the game’s success in the long-term, with hopefully more players picking up the game as a result of this initiative.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam/Windows 10.

Dragon Ball FighterZ character roundup: What we’ve seen so far for Captain Ginyu

Our own Tournament of Power still has a lot of time left! Keep practicing!

We’ve seen a lot of tech videos for Dragon Ball FighterZ come through our tipline, covering everything from team-building strategy, fundamental game mechanics, and combo after combo after combo, from throughout the game’s cast! Since the roundups were put together based on what came in when, not sorted by character, we’re re-compiling them by fighter to make it easier to find something for your individual team members.

This time, let’s look at what we’ve seen so far for Captain Ginyu!

Few have pushed the combos and setups of pre-launch DBFZ the way Clayton “Final Showdown” Chapman has. If you really want to see the full extent of combo possibilities at the moment, these are a great place to start:

These Ginyu mid-screen setups are particularly impressive for the way they still set up Ginyu’s Force without assists.

TGN Anime shows off the moveset of Captain Ginyu (and the Ginyu Force!).

rooflemonger explains the properties of Captain Ginyu’s Ginyu Force.

Ninja demonstrates a powerful glitch involving the meter consumption of Ginyu’s Milky Cannon DHC.

Brian Kasugano has a new and extensive combo video featuring stuff for SSJ Vegeta, Krillin, Frieza, Ginyu, SSGSS Goku, and Piccolo.

Get your squad ready, because everyone on the team is involved in ArcBueno‘s Ginyu combo video.

As always, thanks to all content creators out there, and everyone that sent in tip! Keep an eye on Shoryuken for future DBFZ roundups!

“Dante Must Die” in this Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite community combo video

Those following Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite at Winter Brawl may have gotten a glimpse of a combo video called “Dante Must Die,” shown just before top 8. The video is a project led by former Shoryuken staffer Joseph “Wolverine Master” Quashie, and is a spiritual follow-up to a series of combo videos for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 called “Wesker Must Die.”

Now, for those who either missed the video (or simply want to see it again) Wolverine Master has uploaded it onto his YouTube channel.

The video below features the work of Josh360, Hi I’m Nasty, Ketsui, YoungBlood, BabaGhanoush, Dr. Snaketits, Mosh, Shadowed Fate, and of course, Wolverine Master himself. As the title states, it focuses on combos that can kill Dante (or any character with 9,000 life) by taking advantage of the increased damage and other properties of the Power Stone’s Infinity Storm.

In addition to this, they also tease a future follow up video, this time focusing on the Time Stone.

Dragon Ball FighterZ character roundup: What we’ve seen so far for Trunks

Our own Tournament of Power still has a lot of time left! Keep practicing!

We’ve seen a lot of tech videos for Dragon Ball FighterZ come through our tipline, covering everything from team-building strategy, fundamental game mechanics, and combo after combo after combo, from throughout the game’s cast! Since the roundups were put together based on what came in when, not sorted by character, we’re re-compiling them by fighter to make it easier to find something for your individual team members.

This time, let’s look at what we’ve seen so far for Trunks!

Few have pushed the combos and setups of pre-launch DBFZ the way Clayton “Final Showdown” Chapman has. If you really want to see the full extent of combo possibilities at the moment, these are a great place to start:

desk stages his own DBZ story with his Trunks vs. Frieza combo video. So does this officially count as fan-fiction?

Meanwhile, Bubby’s combo features the unlikely pair of Trunks and Android 18.

GLHFtv covers Trunks’s unusual (and interesting) mobility options.

As always, thanks to all content creators out there, and everyone that sent in tip! Keep an eye on Shoryuken for future DBFZ roundups!

VesperArcade examines the potential changes to Guilty Gear’s complex mechanics

Notable Street Fighter V content creator VesperArcade is switching gears to Arc System Works’ premier fighter, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 by dissecting a story from Destructoid about the game and its future. VesperArcade invited knowledgeable GG player Killey onto the show to discuss it.

The Destructoid interview with GG developer Daisuke Ishiwatari covers many angles, including whether the game has a chance of showing up on the Nintendo Switch platform and a talk about its legacy. What’s most compelling for avid fighting game fans, though, is Ishiwatari’s mention of wanting to simplify certain GG mechanics in future installments. There are no specifics as to what would be cut, but the overall goal for Ishiwatari is to make the game a little more accessible while keeping its deep, complex nature intact.

VesperArcade and Killey speculate as to what those mechanics could be. Danger Time comes up as a possibility, with Killey explaining that it’s an unnecessary and arbitrary mechanic. Killey also mentions Hellfire mode could be adjusted a bit (which activates whenever someone is at critical health). Blitz Shield could see some adjustments as well. He also brings up character specific combos, which require extra training and memorization, but also lead to flashy, unique combinations.

DigitalFoundry captures 4K footage of SoulCalibur VI, analyzes graphics and performance on PC

Here’s a treat for PC fighting game players: DigitalFoundry — a famous UK YouTube channel that analyzes PC game graphics and performance — got their hands on an early build of SoulCalibur VI. As we know, Bandai Namco’s fighter will release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and fortunately for those in the “PC Master Race,” the Stage of History will be playable on your powerful rig.

Though it is an early build, David Bierton and Tom Morgan discuss the footage they captured in 4K resolution, while using a GTX 1080 graphics card. They start off by comparing the title to its direct predecessor, SoulCalibur V — and the differences are obviously massive. They point out a shift in art style, which switches to more colorful, brighter backgrounds that contain many more objects than prior games. DigitalFoundry praises the shaders and use of lighting in particular. Unreal Engine 4 can also handle the physics for clothing (which used to be hand-animated). Unfortunately, there were no graphic settings yet.

As for performance, there are largely no issues, and the game plays at mostly 60 frames per second, but the duo did notice weird drops after the first rounds of matches. Check out the video below to listen to the details:
