Japanese player puts together useful courtesy and travel guide for those going to Evo Japan

Evo Japan is nearly upon us, and soon, many members of the FGC community will find themselves in the Land of the Rising Sun for the first time. While most of the arrangments probably have been made if you’re indeed going, a little extra research on how to get around and behave won’t hurt. After all, while there is a lot of information in English, there’s still a language barrier present, and Japanese customs are very different.

Luckily, known Japanese Guilty Gear player (and very good Venom), 310, put together and quick and easy guide with useful links that talks about a few things you need to know. In his Travel Guide for the FGC, he points to some good money exchange spots in Akihabara and Ikebukuro, and some tips for trains (which, importantly, don’t run 24 hours). Scroll to the bottom to see some important travel words.

But what’s going to be really important for FGC players is the “Arcade Etiquette” section. For one, you have to understand how lines in the arcade work. You shouldn’t play again if you’ve lost if there are any people behind you, unless they are fine with it. Also, some arcades allow smoking, but not all places do. 310 also gave map links to all the arcades you’d like to visit and listed their “main” games.

Recently, he updated the original doc — and welcomes questions. Check out the full guide on Evernote.

Good luck to those going to Evo Japan, and also, you may remember him from the 310 homage Guilty Gear combos.

Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] will support legacy sticks, cross-play between PS4 and PS3

Good news for Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] fans who are excited about the upcoming US and European console releases of the game. Aksys Games recently announced that the game will, in fact, support legacy controllers. That means arcade sticks which only worked with the PlayStation 3 will work in this version of UNIST on newer consoles. What’s more, PS3 owners will be able to play with those who own the PS4 versions of the game.

This is in addition to everything else the [st] update offers — such as a robust Tutorial Mode that teaches the game, Challenge missions for characters, and a lengthy story mode titled Chronicle. Those who attend the upcoming Frosty Faustings X tournament can try out the localized version there!

The European edition is similarly coming out on February 9th, and there’s a special UNIST “End of Dawn” edition available as well. Also, make sure to read up on the recap of the UNIST scene in 2017.

Sylvanos, the Heart of the Forest, joins the Rivals of Aether roster later this year

Dan Fornace and the Rivals of Aether team have just announced a brand new character during the Rivals Championship Series 2 finale at Genesis 5. This new fighter is Sylvanos, the Heart of the Forest — a raging spirit who rules the Aetherian Forest floor.

Taking clear inspiration from Ivysaur in Project M, this monstrous half wolf/half plant excels at the mid range, using its vines to keep foes at bay. Similar to Ivysaur’s Bullet Seed, Sylvanos can shoot a man-eating flower bulb from its tail, which can create a spinning projectile or plant grass on the stage. Sylvanos can also plant grass by simply running around the stage, which can be used to extend the range of certain projectiles or his dash attack. He can even awaken the grass, causing thorns to sprout up from the ground and knock opponents into the air. If you don’t stop Sylvanos early, he’ll spread across the stage like a weed.

Sylvanos’ vines make him a devastating ranged fighter, with his up smash causing a giant wooden stump to erupt from the ground and hit airborne opponents. His up air is a lot like Ivysaur’s Vine Whip, with it having a tipper hitbox on the tip of the vine. Not only can he uses these vines like Corrin’s Pin — lodging them in platforms to keep him briefly suspended in the air — but one of his specials has Sylvanos burrowing through the side of the stage and erupting up from the floor. You’ll have to drastically reconsider your edgeguards against this overgrown opponent.

Sylvanos doesn’t have a release date as of yet, but expect him to release alongside the final original character for Rivals of Aether, who was briefly teased at the end of this trailer. Based on a Twitter poll from last year, this final fighter will be either a snake or a rabbit, piloting what sounds like a propeller-powered robot.

The Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite tournament at Frosty Faustings X will not use the recent patch

As previously reported, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite got a patch that addressed the backturn unblockables, alongside making some minor balance tweaks. The timing of the patch’s release, however, may be a bit too close for at least one tournament.

The official Frosty Faustings Twitter has announced that the new patch will not be used at the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite tournament at Frosty Faustings X.

Given the short amount of time between the patch and the game, it’s understandable that Frosty Faustings X would stick to the old version. Balance changes, no matter how small, are always bound to change the way the game is played on some level. This is in addition to the fact that trying to patch all the console setups to be used for a tournament, this close to the actual tournament date, can be a logistical nightmare.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition at Genesis 5: XSK_Samurai, LPN, & Pavocado share their impressions and mindsets

While the Genesis tournament series has been first and foremost a Super Smash Bros. event, the staff has been adding more games to its lineup since last year’s event. For Genesis 5 in Oakland, CA, in addition to Smash 64, Melee, and SSB4, there will be tournaments for Rivals of Aether, Splatoon 2, Dance Dance Revolution Extreme, and last but not least, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition.

genesis 5

Genesis 4 did feature SFV last year with 130 entrants from both Northern and Southern California. So far, this year’s event doesn’t have quite as many competitors as last year (only 57 as of this writing, but there is still on-site registration the day of the tournament), there is an added $1,000 pot bonus that some of NorCal’s players will be playing for this weekend, with the likes of Evil Genius’ Ricki Ortiz, Rommel “ROM” Macatangay, Miky “XSK_Samurai” Chea, Long “LPN” Nguyen, and Pavo “Pavocado” Miskic in attendance.

Since SFV: Arcade Edition is only a few days old, the results may vary this weekend due to the cast having access to brand new V-Triggers, Sakura being tournament legal, and huge character balance changes. I caught up with Miky, Long, and Pavo to get their early Arcade Edition impressions and their competitive mindsets going into Genesis 5, and beyond.

Kolin is ridiculously cool and powerful now! Expect it to be a cold year.

“I think the single player content is fantastic and the reworked UI is hella sick. I get excited just watching the matches queue up,” said Pavo.

LPN shared the same enthusiasm for the new update: “Playing it for the last few days, it has sparked my interest in many different avenues. With the plethora of tech and info shared across Twitter and YouTube the past few days, I’m overjoyed at how fast people are picking things up in this rediscovery stage. It’s a good look for SFV and seeing other people happy about the game makes me happy as well.”

As far as the character balance changes were concerned, all three players had varied opinions.

sfv abigail max power“If we’re talking balance, it seems like the gap between low and mid tier is closer than before, but the gap between high tier and everyone else is even bigger than before. A lot of people are going to have to pick up secondaries this year if they want to win big tournaments,” Pavo said. He also adds, “It’s hard to tell how everything will shake out, but the early tech for Abigail is already incredible. Getting hard knockdown on the first hit of his Abigail Punches special move into the new V-Trigger 2 for free unblockables is kind of mind-blowing, considering Akuma just lost his hard knockdown sets ups.

“I’m also slightly worried about Guile considering his bad match-ups seem to have gotten worse, but the system changes benefit Guile more than ever. Mika was mostly given positive changes that go hand-in-hand with her current playstyle, but none of it seems to be that extra cheap stuff that the potential top tiers have. The system changes to throws aren’t in her favor either. She’ll still work, but her bad match ups will require back up for competition. I’m hoping that Blanka will fix all my problems!”

In contrast to Pavo’s enthusiasm, LPN seems unconvinced: “Some characters got over-buffed, [Rashid and Laura] are prime examples. Great characters who are now even greater for no sensible reason in my opinion. New mix ups of Laura have been floating around the internet and Rashid flying in every video as well. The idea behind the game becoming more “neutral” must have been a rumor that’s been circulating the internet for some time now, because it isn’t apparent in AE.”

LPN also seemed confused about the way that characters had been changed: “Some other characters like Alex and Vega can use some more buffs, and some characters like Ken and Akuma got nerfed in a weird direction. The characters aren’t destroyed or unplayable. Just minor adjustments will make them ‘complete.’ Oh yeah, Kolin is ridiculously cool and powerful now! Expect it to be a cold year.”

Seeing other people happy about the game makes me happy as well.

He added: “Some people are happy. Others are not. But the bottom line is, if you enjoy playing the game, then continue to do so. Overall I still love the game and with Arcade Edition out now, I’m ready to jump back into the lab.”

Miky said that he thinks the changes will lead to a more neutral-based experience, even though some characters will have strong 50/50 setups and one-touch kills. He said that even though he will have to work harder, he feels that it will make him play better overall. “Season 3 will bring a new direction in terms of development for players. It’ll be up to the player to realize that and take it into consideration when looking to improve for this year.”

As for the mindsets of all three players going into competing at Genesis 5 and future tournaments, they all seemed optimistic and focused, despite the drastic changes in season three.

sfv_sakura_activation“My mindset going into Genesis is to not make the tournament special,” Pavo said. “No extra pressure, no expectations. If I show up and can stay focused throughout the tournament I’ll be happy. I’m not worried about anyone in particular, but all the new options people have means anyone has the potential to surprise me with some dirty tech I haven’t seen before. I hope to be ready to adjust on the fly. My future plans for Season Three are to hit up everything I can. I haven’t seen the East Coast yet and would love to go out there and play with everyone.”

A lot of people are going to have to pick up secondaries this year if they want to win big tournaments.

LPN said, “My mindset going into Genesis is to show the people what AE is all about. It’s a fresh start for many people and I feel so for myself I’m not worried about any particular player as I’m confident in my ability to take the whole thing. As for future tournaments, I plan on going to as many CPT tournaments as possible to compete in SFVAE.”

sfvae v-trigger ii kolin

Lastly, Miky adds emphatically, “I am going there to win with my new style. I don’t care who I play against, or which character. Season 3 in terms of future tournaments? I’m not sure, since I am not sponsored for this season. I will most likely compete in California majors and locals.”

It should be an exciting time for both players and spectators this weekend at Genesis 5 in Oakland, CA. SFVAE takes place this Saturday at around 2:00 PM PT, and is being streamed by IPLAYWINNER.

Loot boxes found within early copies of Dragon Ball FighterZ

But don’t fret — they seem nice.

Dragon Ball FighterZ may release in about a week, but it appears some players have gotten their hands on early copies, and are diving into the mechanics of the full game. The information that is presented in this article was found through Reset Era Forums after reporting by Attack of the Fanboy.

One new feature that has not been officially addressed is the game’s capsule system. Similar to loot boxes, these capsules — from the trusty Capsule Corporation, of course — contain randomly-assorted cosmetic items like lobby avatars, character colors, and titles. The capsules can be purchased with two different currencies. There is Zeni, which is unlocked by regular gameplay (like completing Arcade Mode or playing through the story), and there are Premium Z Coins. The latter currency is gained when duplicate items are obtained through the capsules.

There is no confirmation on whether or not Premium Z Coins can be purchased with real money — due to the full-version game servers still being down — but it is assumed, by those who have gotten access to the title by a link to the Xbox Store found on the menu.

The unlock system is very similar to the one Arc System Works used first in Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-. There is a fishing mechanic where players use in-game currency to unlock similar collectibles. Here is an in-depth look at the system -REVELATOR- presents.

This system appears to be one of the most friendly forms of the loot box practice. Everything can be earned in-game, and while it has not been confirmed, allowing the option to instead purchase the Premium Z Coins isn’t all that bad, either.

We will know all the details soon when Dragon Ball FighterZ finally releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 26. It has been a heck of a ride since Xbox’s E3 conference last year! I can’t wait to see what this title has in store.

Fighting EX Layer will be playable at Evo Japan, with Doctrine Dark

One of the games that many players are waiting for with bated breath is ARIKA’s Fighting EX Layer. This revival of ARIKA’s past fighting games is something many fans have wanted, especially since it brings back some of the roster from Street Fighter EX.

For those looking to get a chance to play the game, ARIKA has announced that they will be bringing the game to Evo Japan. Fighting EX Layer will not only be playable at Evo Japan, but the build that ARIKA is bringing will feature fan-favorite Doctrine Dark.

The mentally-unstable mercenary is coming to Evo Japan, garrote and explosives in tow. He will be joined the original six characters from the beta last December: Kairi, Allen, Shirase, Garuda, Darun, and Skullomania.

Evo Japan takes place in Tokyo, on January 26 to 28.

All Might confirmed for My Hero Academia: One’s Justice

The latest issue of Weekly Shonen Jump has just revealed the fourth playable character for My Hero Academia: One’s Justice. Toshinori Yagi, a.k.a. the hero All Might, will be joining Izuku Midoriya, Tomura Shigaraki, and Katsuki Bakugo.

The deuteragonist of My Hero Academia, All Might is the number 1 ranked hero who bears the title of the world’s “Symbol of Peace.” He’s also the eighth holder of the “One For All” Quirk, that he has since passed on to Izuku Midoriya who he is grooming to be his successor.

With this “One For All” Quirk, All Might can use standard attacks that knock his opponents back, and all of his moves are “ultimate class.”
