Rising Up: Sakura bread-and-butter combo guide — Punishes, confirm combos, juggles, & more

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition just released, and schoolgirl series veteran Sakura Kasugano alongside it. I expect modern players to be most familiar with her SFIV incarnation, but the one in this game plays about halfway between her Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter X Tekken versions. Since she’s free to play for a week and because so many people would be trying her out, I worked quickly on this guide of her essential combos, so that players can quickly learn the basics and start developing their neutral game. Here are your best bread-and-butter combos that I’ve found for every common scenario. This video features anti-airs, punishes, confirms, counter-hit combos, crush counter combos, juggles, and more.

This Sakura bread-and-butter video is not the full Sakura tutorial I’m working on, but rather simply a guide to her basic optimal combo routes. The combos are all my own findings, alongside a few things I’ve observed from other players. Sakura’s combo routes seem somewhat straightforward, so I’m fairly certain that most of this footage is fully optimal. Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly encourage anyone watching to point out further damage or setplay improvements in the comments, for both me and the other players, so that I can amend them into the final video when I release it.

Last balance patch, I made a series of videos explaining the balance changes for each character and how they affected gameplay. Now, Arcade Edition has brought a much bigger change list. I’m going to start making a pair of videos a day for about the next month, each focusing on a different character a day. One video will be an explanation of the character’s 2nd V-trigger, with some basic VT2 combos. The other will summarize and demonstrate the balance changes that character received. I encourage everyone to follow along since it’s important to know what each character can do, even if you don’t play them.

Sakura will be tournament legal in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition at Evo Japan

With the release of any new character, there always comes the question of whether or not that character will be allowed for use at any tournaments being run close to their release. Such is the case with Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition‘s Sakura, who comes out just over a week before the inaugural Evo Japan.

For those wondering if they’ll be able to play Sakura at Evo japan, wonder no more. In a recent tweet, Evo head Joey “Mr Wizard” Cuellar has confirmed that Sakura will indeed be playable at the event.

While Sakura may be new to Street Fighter V, the game’s Arcade Edition update has brought with it a number of changes for the rest of the cast as well. As such, the game’s current balance is still up in the air as people now have to learn the new match-up not just against Sakura, but for the rest of the cast.

Evo Japan takes place next week from January 26 to 28 in Tokyo.

The Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta will return for another 24 hours, starting tonight

Take another shot at collecting the Dragon Balls in an extra open beta day.

The Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta has been a pretty rough experience for many users, fraught with server lockouts and lengthy matchmaking wait times — which, as a beta aiming to test server stress, is not exactly a shocking discovery. But players, craving more time fighting and less time waiting, were understandable frustrated. As a result, Bandai Namco promised an extension day for us to get another crack at the game.

The time period for the beta extension is now set: it will run from tonight, January 17th, 9:00 PM PT to 9:00 PM PT on January 18th. “Improvements to the experience” are promised for this extra 24-hour beta window. This should help tide us over a little bit longer until the game’s release on January 26 next week!

Could this be her final form? Android 21 finally takes the stage with horrifying Buu abilities!

The villainous Android 21 is hungry for world domination.

At long last, the antagonist of the highly-anticipated title Dragon Ball FighterZ has been confirmed as a playable character, but not quite how you’d think. Android 21 has reached new heights, and her newfound abilities are sure to make her a fiendish foe in the story, and in battle. The character was announced in the most recent Famitsu magazine.

The new character’s appearance has changed dramatically, going from an auburn-haired scientist to what appears to be a new kind of Majin. There is no doubt that Android 21 has even more surprises in store, but one thing’s for sure: the evil femme fatale’s appetite for destruction has only grown in this new form.

Android 21 Character Reveal 2

One of Android 21’s defining traits is her new absorption technique. With this ability, she is able to take the special moves from her opponents, thus allowing her to use abilities like Kamehameha or Solar Flare for example. She has a special attack called “Tasting Cut” which allows Android 21 to absorb the opposing character’s energy. If this means she will absorb their health or their ki is yet to be confirmed. According to the translation, Android 21’s super technique is titled, “Hungry Time,” which turns your opponent into sweets, similarly to Majin Buu, but there appears to be a cryptic difference.

What’s interesting is that this version of the character was first noticed briefly during a previous trailer. As time passed and the dust settled, the discussion surrounding this mystery character died down. Now that the new form of Android 21 has been confirmed, we are left to wait to discover how she gains this seemingly unstoppable transformation. Dragon Ball FighterZ releases on January 21 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Stay tuned for more information regarding the new character and Dragon Ball FighterZ here at SRK!

What’s in a controller? Watch this video breakdown of pad, joystick, and keyboard for Tekken 7

In recent years, we have went from the majority of top players using joysticks to seeing a more diverse amount of controllers on the circuit. This has almost always been the case, however, for Tekken — as the button layout for the game lends itself to a wide array of controllers.

TheMainManSWE just broke down multiple options in one video. He goes over the standard joystick, controller, and keyboard — the latter of which he likens to the Hitbox. He talks about the pros and the cons of each control option, so that players who haven’t figured out which one to use can make an informed choice on their purchases.

Get caught in the pressure: Corner mix-ups for Yuri in The King of Fighters XIV

One of the most notorious things about The King of Fighters gameplay is getting your opponent into the corner: with all of the movement options and offensive tools afforded you by the game itself, a mark of a great player is being able to make your opponent make the wrong decisions when their back is against the wall.

With Yuri in The King of Fighters XIV, she has all the tools needed to play a pristine corner game, including a dive kick which can stuff many reversals on reset, and several safe jump options that can beat all attempts to get out of the corner. In this video, we see many examples of this, including her blowing up evasion attempts from characters like Kim, Gang-il, and Leona.

Optimize your King for the Howard Estate with this Tekken 7 combo tutorial

Tekken 7‘s Howard Estate stage has seen its fair share of 100% combos since its release with Geese. Surprisingly, one character that hasn’t been able to do that much has been King. Relying on his grab combo ender, he doesn’t have as much in the way of wall-carry potential, which is necessary to take advantage of the stage’s multiple breakable walls.

However, the key for King is not to carry off of the balcony, but he can optimize all of his damage between the second and third walls of Howard Estate. This video show some of his most optimal combos on this stage.

desk and Final Showdown show off some swag in this Dragon Ball FighterZ mini combo video roundup

The focus of the Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta was the game’s online matchmaking, and getting people to try the game out by fighting other people. That said, that hasn’t stopped some folks from testing out the game and looking for combos.

Two of the creators who’ve put out some combo videos for the beta are none other than desk and Final Showdown. Both of these players have found ways — using the game’s limited tutorial mode — to test out some combos, despite the lack of a proper training mode.

While this is his first time actually playing the game, Final Showdown has had an interesting history with it. Prior to the beta, he’s been breaking down footage of older builds in the forums, providing insight and making predictions that have all turned out to be true. This includes a near-infinite for Goku while in Sparking Blast mode, that’s one of the things showcased in the video below.

Another thing that he’s noted is that it’s generally better to use the first two hits of an air autocombo (what would be light to medium in a normal chain) as these have better momentum and tracking than doing a normal chain. This is something to think about when looking at this second batch of combos for Goku.

Of course, the tutorial mode does allow players to use more characters later on, such as teen Gohan who’s featured (alongside Goku) in the video below.

desk’s first combo video for the Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta, on the other hand, focuses on one of the game’s unique mechanics: the Dragon Balls. The highlights of the video below is a combo extension after Shenron is summoned.

His second video is less ambitious, highlighting mostly ways to continue combos after a super.

And as a bonus, here’s some Perfect Cell tech from Georg Shkodo:

Dragon Ball FighterZ hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in the West on January 26, followed by Japan on February 1.

This Yoshimitsu compilation combines wits and master-class trolling for Tekken 7 and SoulCalibur V

I don’t normally like watching match compilation videos; there’s certainly things you can learn from them that you can’t from a tutorial, of course. But if I’m hunting for information, it’s because I’m looking for data, not tricks. This is a personal preference, but in regards to this recent offering from LiangHuBBB, it’s also important to note…

Because Namco’s Yoshmitisu is his tricks, at least to a certain degree. This video illustrates why, pulling some of the most informative and hilarious gameplay together for Yoshimitsu from Tekken 7 and SoulCalibur V.

His smoke-and-mirror knowledge checks are built into nearly every aspect of the character, and designed with such style and humor that he is arguably one of the greatest troll characters in the fighting game genre. Yoshimitsu is the screenshot of popular Korean streamer MBC staring blankly into the void after top Yoshimitsu player “Eyemusician” hits him with a 50 frame, no-setup unblockable.
