Catch up on a year’s worth of competitive Project M, with reslived’s 2017 review

Following up from his review for 2016, reslived has returned to sum up another year’s worth of high quality Project M play. With Junebug and Lunchables retiring from the PM scene, much of the action in 2017 centered around the new top three, ThundeRzReign, Sosa and Malachi.

The Project M Championship Circuit returned for 2017, assuring a steady stream of tournaments where players could strut their stuff. A new class of player started to emerge in 2017, with players like Switch, Hyperflame, Fuzz and Flipp threatening the dominance of the top three at several events.

True to his name, ThundeRzReign still reigns supreme, having won two of three events where the top three were in attendance. His Losers’ run at The Bigger Balc stands as the greatest tournament run in Project M history, where the SoCal DK managed to beat Hyperflame, Sosa, Fuzz, Switch and Flipp — to win the entire event. At the final PM major of the year, ThundeRz triumphed over both Sosa and Malachi, even defeating Malachi 3-0 in the final set of Grand Finals.

The PM community is still showing signs of growth — both in terms of its meta and its community — so expect reslived’s 2018 recap to be even better.

Watch high level Japanese play in Shudy Jinlee’s character-locked 3v3 tournament for Tekken 7

Namco Sugamo is a Tokyo arcade, home to a large Tekken-themed museum — indicative of the scene it supports. It has played host to the Mastercup series, Tekken Global qualifying events, and more throughout the years. It’s also the home of SHUDY_JINLEE, a world class player and broadcaster for the Japanese scene.

One of the more interesting regular events that SHUDY_JINLEE runs are character lock events, occasionally forcing players in attendance to all play the same character for a tournament. Since these events are comprised of top Japanese players such as Nero, Ao, Furumizu and more, you get to see some surprising play a character knowledge from these events you wouldn’t otherwise.

The same is true here in today’s 3v3 team tournament: each team is regimented to a single character for all three players. Watch the tournament to see which team, and character, is able to take it all: and you might want to leave your perceptions about tiers at the door.

Mark Street Fighter’s 30th anniversary with this special stamp collection from Japan Post

You’ve got the limited edition 30th Anniversary coin, now it’s time to get the stamp collection. In a collaboration with Japan Post, Capcom have revealed a Street Fighter-themed stamp set, complete with a commemorative stamp book and a limited edition red Chun-Li figure. The ten stamps depict character artwork from different Street Fighter games, starting with the original 1987 Street Fighter and finishing with Street Fighter V.

SF 30th Anniversary Chun-Li figure

For that small number of Street Fighter fans who are also philatelists, this stamp collection is the perfect thing to complete your 30th anniversary collection. If you’re looking to get this piece of unique memorabilia, the stamps, stamp book and Chun-Li figure cost 12,800 yen — which is around $114. When you consider you will be paying for postage from Japan, this could end up being quite the expensive set of stamps.

Better than Street Fighter: The Movie – The Game: It’s Street Fighter: The Movie with Street Fighter II SFX

If you’re old enough to remember seeing Street Fighter: The Movie in theaters, you’re likely to remember the disappointment of how inaccurate the film was to the game it was based on. This video attempts to make it a little closer to the source material, in a different way.

In their longstanding series of applying game sounds over feature films, RetroSFX has finally touched upon Street Fighter — by of course adding Street Fighter II sound effects. This enhancement to the original movie will pique your interest faster than you can say, “Quick! Change the channel!”

JusticeSoulTuna wraps up 2017 with this multi-game combo exhibition

How many fighting games did you try to learn this year? Are you happy with the progress you made in each of them?

JST’s latest combo video reflects on a year’s worth of progress with Street Fighter V‘s Juri and Mika, Tekken 7‘s Lars and Jin, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2‘s Ky, & Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite‘s Zero and Gamora. These games have wildly dissimilar combo systems, which is a byproduct of an active year of new, diverse titles in our genre.

It would seem with every passing year that the FGC branches out further and further, with more types of games getting larger player bases. As 2017 ends and a seemingly even bigger year of fighters begins, let’s think about how far we’ve come as a growing community, and what we have to look forward to in 2018!
