Wizzrobe shows how to wavedash perfectly in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

While this advanced mechanic is back, it’s more situational and character-specific.

One of the most contentious mechanics that has returned in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is wavedashing. While this was something players needed to learn in Super Smash Bros. Melee, later games did their best to eliminate it — before it has finally returned, in a more limited form, in the latest game.

Limited is the key word here, as getting consistent wavedashes seems to be much harder in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This is part of what this new video from Wizzrobe addresses. Here, he shows an alternate way to do wavedashes to get them more consistently.

That said, this is only part of the video. Wizzrobe also discusses how wavedashing is much more character dependent: not all characters have a good wavedash, so not all players may benefit from learning how to do it.

Both Qudans and Book may be taking breaks from competitive Tekken 7 next year

This year’s Tekken World Tour Finals was one of the most hype yet (especially with Rangchu’s underdog win in the finals). However, it seems that next year’s Tour may possibly be missing a few familiar faces.

Two of the top Tekken 7 players in the world, Byung-moon “Qudans” Son from team UYU and Nopparut “Book” Hempamorn may both be taking time off from competitive Tekken, or at least the Tekken World Tour in 2019.

Both players made their announcements via Twitter. Qudans stated that he didn’t know whether or not he would play next year (while also thanking his fans). Meanwhile Book simply stated that he was taking a break for a while.

These aren’t the only players who have stated their plans to take a break from competition. Prior to this, Korean player Mu-jong ‘kkokkoma’ Kim also stated doubts on whether or not he could continue to compete next year.
Neither player has stated the reason for their planned breaks from the game. However, fans on the r/tekken subreddit have speculated that it could be due to the way the payouts for the Tekken World Tour have decreased (this years winner at the TWT Finals only received half of what last years winner got). Whatever the plans of both these players are for next year, we here in Shoryuken wish them the best of luck, and hope they get to keep playing the game they love.

Eliot and Brad Wong confirmed for Dead or Alive 6

With only a couple of months left until release, Team NINJA are still revealing more character for Dead or Alive 6. The latest returning characters confirmed are none other than Eliot and Brad Wong.

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has confirmed the return of both these characters. Eliot, who is the student of the as of yet-unconfirmed Gen Fu, joins the game to continue his training in xinyi quan. Drunken master Brad Wong is once again on searching for some legendary foodstuffs — this time, salmon.

More interesting however is the choice of voice actors, specifically for the Brad Wong. The latter is being voiced by the late Unshō Ishizuka who passed away last August. This possibly makes Dead or Alive 6 the last game Ishizuka has done voice work for.

Dead or Alive 6 launches on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on February 15, 2019.

Italian GameStop website appears to leak details of Mortal Kombat 11’s Premium Edition

Plus the first look at a new costume for pre-order DLC character Shao Khan!

Last Thursday night, the announcement trailer of Mortal Kombat 11 came roaring at us like a blast of Raiden’s thunder. Aside from the brief cinematic clash between Scorpion and Dark Raiden, as well as the announcement of an April 23rd release date, an online beta, and the promise of a global reveal on January 17th, we were left mostly in the dark about this new entry into the klassic series.

However, an online product listing by an Italian GameStop website may have leaked a bit more information about this new title, as well as more details on what will be likely be packed with the $100 Premium Edition of the game.

Test Your Might user Gamer68 spotted the Italian product description and put it through Google Translate. It reads as follows, with important points in bold:

Mortal Kombat is back and is more fit than ever in this new and fantastic evolution of the iconic title. Now you can customize the variants of your fighters down to the smallest detail, gaining unprecedented control over the aesthetics of the characters. The new graphic engine renders in the smallest details every crushed skull and torn heart, immersing yourself completely in the action of the most bloody scenes. In addition, the new list of fighters includes unpublished characters and the Klassics of the series, protagonists of fantastic movies in the story mode of the epic saga that has been going on for more than 25 years.

– New game engine, with even more bloody and bloody scenes
– New personalization system, with clothes, accessories and move sets never seen before
– New Fatality as well as a new GoreTech system to make the performances even more brutal
– Very strong multiplayer component, entirely oriented towards the esports: personalization systems, daily news, constantly updated rewards and an improved matchmaking

Additional Contents
The Premium Edition includes:
– Steelcase
– Kombat Pass: 6 characters & 6 Battlepass

To unpack some of this information, with the official press release already confirming the presence of “Custom Character Variations,” we could perhaps be seeing something to Injustice 2’s Gear System, which allowed players to customize their favorite DC characters with various costume pieces to create their own individual looks. Some pieces even unlocked additional Gear Abilities to expand or replace base attack’s in a fighter’s pool of moves. The new “GoreTech System,” combined with an upgrade to Unreal Engine 4 should make for some truly brutal and visceral moments.

NetherRealm Studios also appears to be placing a larger aspect on the esports and competitive aspect of their newest title, with the multiplayer component being “entirely oriented” towards it — with even stronger matchmaking, and what could be time-based Challenges and reminders of upcoming events, like we’ve seen in Dead or Alive 5, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2.

Finally, it seems the Premium Edition — in addition to Beta access and Shao Khan — will provide purchasers with a Steelbox case and a Kombat Pack containing 6 DLC Kombatants and 6 “Battle Passes,” that we’ll likely learn more about at a a later date. There is also a new screenshot depicting Shao Khan in a suit of armor with his Warhammer. Whether this is an alternate costume or some type of customized outfit remains unknown. You can see the image, along with in-game screens of Dark Raiden and Scorpion, below.

VesperArcade breaks down their wishlist for Menat changes in Season 4 of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

When Justin Wong stopped by Frame Advantage studios earlier this year to talk about Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition‘s Menat, he summed her up simply: “She’s very, very cheap.”

You’d think that make VesperArcade’s current project — theorizing what changes would best benefit the inevitable upcoming Season 4 balance patch — would be made a lot simpler thanks to that quip from one of Menat’s top players. The reality is a little more complicated: a lot of Menat’s “oompf” came from changes in Season 3, including the addition of a new move that filled a gap in her complicated gameplan. (It also didn’t hurt any that it was during Season 3 that Sako practically reinvented the way the community viewed the character.)

Check out the video above to see how they tackle a theoretical Menat in Season 4 — are you happy with the changes they propose?

Leffen breaks down Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s buffer quirks, stick sensitivity settings, and more

Evo champion William Peter Hjelte, better known as “Leffen”, has spent his time in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate dissecting many of its new properties. During his stress test he’s found that Nintendo’s new platform fighter has some odd quirks when it comes to its new buffer system, most notably in the way it implements the c-stick during aerials.

Many of the problems with the C-Stick are likely attributed to the fact it is a macro, which you can read about in further detail here in this reddit thread.

Capcom Cup 2018 Analysis: Will Phenom stand out as phenomenal?

Phenom is the last of the high-level Necalli mains. While many have walked away from the character, Phenom has stuck with him, and has proven he can still hang with the best in the world. For the third straight year, Phenom has found himself ready to devour the competition at Capcom Cup. In 2016, he placed just outside of top 8; in 2017, he went 0-2. Will he return to form, or even better?

Necalli

Never Stops

Where many others saw a ceiling with Necalli and abandoned ship, Phenom was able to stick with the character, and still perform at a high level. While his spacing game ultimately became a non-issue, Phenom was able to press forward, proving that he could still persist to find new ways to make the character work.

You can see that in his play, where his spacing and his corner pressure has become an increasing problem. When his neutral game got nerfed, it had to. But given the corner was where Phenom tended to excel, it’s unsurprising the character still works in his hands. He plays similar to Xiao Hai when he gets you to the corner, making you make bad decisions that he capitalizes on.

Still Winning

While Haitani did drop Necalli and was less successful, Phenom was able to keep his winning ways. With ten top 8s to his name in 2018, he has been one of the most successful Europeans on the circuit — outside of Problem X, of course.

While the bulk of his tournament success was in European ranking events (he won three) he also managed to finish top 3 at CEO behind Xiao Hai and Fujimura. This does show that there’s been gas left in his competitive tank.

sfv_necalli_menacing

But Not Quite Enough

But here’s the issue, his best results have only been in Europe. While he did well at CEO, outside of Red Bull Conquest, that seemed to be a flash in the pan for Phenom. Top 16 at Canada Cup is a strong result, given how tough it is to break through in that bracket every year, but is it enough? It’s not his third place finish at the same event two years ago. This makes it hard to really count on his durability these days, especially when you look at who he’s going up against and losing to. Losing to StormKUBO at Red Bull definitely shows issues in this match-up, whereas this was GamerBee’s pick of choice against the same player at NorCal Regionals. But then also losing to John Takeuchi not only shows that he struggles even against players who were unable to qualify for Capcom Cup outright, but Rashid specifically. Bad news for if he runs up against Oil King, Big Bird, or Gachikun.

Final Thoughts

While he may tentatively avoid all three Rashids by being on the opposite end of the bracket, he could ultimately be playing Problem X in the second round should he find himself in Winners Bracket that long. Given that he struggled against StormKUBO, how much more would he struggle against Problem X should he pick Abigail on him?

I feel like Phenom is a promising player that possibly needs to re-adjust. By re-adjust, I think unless something major happens in the Season 4 patch, he needs to find a new character that suits him well. Given that it’s hard to do so with so few days left, I don’t see Phenom making it that far.
