What happened with Absolute Battle 8?

Despite the hurricane in Texas — which has impacted many lives and prevented safe travels — members of the fighting game community took the opportunity to travel to Plano this past weekend. The eighth iteration of Absolute Battle, by no means a small tournament, invited competition across the wide spectrum of fighting game titles: from mainstays like Street Fighter V, Injustice 2, Tekken 7, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, to anime titles like BlazBlue: Central Fiction and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, as well as For Honor and some Mystery Games.

The event is no small fry for sure. Part of the Injustice 2 Pro Series, a Capcom Pro Tour Qualifier, and the Tekken World Tour: the stakes were fairly high, attracting 522 attendees, according to the smash.gg event page. The sponsorship support is there.

However — during and after, multiple sources started pouring out feedback regarding the event. To shorten the r/Kappa thread (some NSFW language, there), problems arose in a multitude of ways: story/DLC characters missing on setups (BlazBlue players had to rapidly slog through the enormous Story Mode to get Susano’o), pool “swicheroos” where your pool could be unexpectedly pushed ahead in schedule, missing cords to get consoles working, streams failing to work, and the stark difference between top 8 treatment for certain games.

Below is a comparison between the stages: on the left, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and on the right, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, which reportedly didn’t have sound running, and also had to switch to a 2/3 format from a 3/5.

Kizzercrate, a top 8 Guilty Gear and BlazBlue player at the event, wrote a personal recount from Absolute Battle 8. It’s definitely a worthy read, as it tells about how the pools were shuffled around at the last minute, which led to disqualifying many participants. Furthermore, the brackets weren’t ready ahead of time, which prevented studying opponent match-ups.

“1:30 PM rolls around. No stream, no in-house projector working, no sound on the speakers, and there’s one tournament organizer running Gear top 8 and apparently [there’s a] huge Tekken snafu at the same time,” Kizzercrate writes. “We played the winners’ side of top 8 and I found out that they’re using my setup to run losers’ side.”

“Through a couple of shaky cams, peering over shoulders, and livetweeting updates, we got through top 8. And then another two full hours of pestering to get our payouts (‘they’re cutting the checks right now’ my butt) so I could actually catch my flight home. During this time, BB top 8 started and apparently the stream, finally “fixed” after four hours, had a ton of issues even then?”

This wasn’t just the case with anime titles, though. Rip, a caster for many high-level events, tweeted out his concerns during the event, which impacted his play in a negative way.

Echo Fox|Justin Wong further corroborated the sentiments.

So what actually happened to cause so much disorganization? Versus Gameplay, the organization behind the event, provided statements to explain what went wrong.

“I will admit the tournament did not go as smoothly as we had planned,” said Reginal Jeffery from Versus Gameplay to SRK. “We had a lot of last minute changes and scheduling that clearly fall on my shoulder as the tournament organizer. We had problems with the large influx of numbers that we had. Our past tournaments ran much better. I regret not giving a better experience, and we really want to work hard to correct that for next year.”

When asked about the manner the pools were ran, Jeffery responded:

“We had a low outcome of crew that we expected to come in. Unfortunately, I put some guys in positions to run brackets they may not have been ready for. We were short on staff, and I asked some folks to step in and help, and that was my fault for doing that. As soon as I was able to get stronger bracket runners, we were able to get things going. But because we had staff that was kind of inexperienced, it was honestly on me putting them in the bad spots. They weren’t trying to rush things, I think they were still at expected numbers.”

Streamers suffered from issues, but Jeffery makes it clear it wasn’t their fault. Among them was Panda x Gaming, who had to clarify on multiple fronts that he tried to salvage as much of the event as possible and defend himself from community criticism.

“My streamers had absolutely nothing to do with the issues at Absolute Battle,” Jeffery continued. “We had issues with our ISP (internet service provider). I dealt with them directly. I did my best to make sure they had the speed and everything. Unfortunately, we ran into some hiccups. I know a couple of games weren’t streamed, they weren’t streamed as often. That was no fault of streamers, that was miscommunication between me and my streamers and not being able to get them on the same page where they need to be.”

As we know, Hurricane Harvey impacted Texas this past weekend. SRK asked Jeffery what kind of effect it had on Absolute Battle.

“We saw some rain, but Dallas is a long ways away, so I don’t want to say that was the main reason. We did have some staff and some people who couldn’t come in because of the hurricane. We reacted accordingly. As for some pools, we had players who couldn’t come in, so we had to rearrange pools quickly. That made it seem like some pools were unfair to others and we made did our best to fix those at the last minute. But at the end of the day, I was not prepared for the influx and the changes and the lack of people showing up and the addition of people showing up from other states made, so I kind of put the team in a bad spot with that.”

When pressed on the contrasting quality of stages, Jeffery explained that while they had a goal of running all top 8s in one day, the last-minute adjustments they had to make prevented from making a better second stage. Due to limited venue space, they split up the other top 8s in another room to “reduce traffic” and crowding. SRK’s own writer Crow_Spaceboy attended the event, and said that this year only half the ballroom was used, while last year the entire ballroom was used for the event purposes.

The Absolute Battle organizers have already booked a much bigger venue in Dallas, TX, for next year. But it’s up to the community at large whether they will give Absolute Battle 9 a chance. To the anime community, Jeffery acknowledges that they may feel disrespected.

“I can tell you that’s the furthest thing from the truth. I respect all my players and the games the same. We want them all to have the same experience, no disrespect intended. It’s just that we ran into some hiccups last minute, and we weren’t able to flex in time to give everyone satisfaction in the event that they got in the past.”

Listen to Menat’s mystical Street Fighter V theme while you wait for her to arrive today

You can’t play her yet — but you can get an earful of her theme music.

To keep you stoked for Menat while you wait for the servers to come back up, VesperArcade has uploaded an extended cut of Menat’s theme for Street Fighter V, as featured in her reveal trailer. Not as much of a divergence from the usual as Ed’s or Abigail’s music, Menat’s theme seems to be a soft rock score with a bit of ethereal electronica thrown in:

More more Menat, check out her V-System and costumes, her move list, and VesperArcade’s examination of her normal and special moves from the reveal trailer.

DotEmu celebrates the release of Windjammers on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita with the most ’90s trailer ever conceived

Even the addition of parachute pants and Lisa Frank folders couldn’t make this trailer hit the ’90s kids in the audience any harder. To celebrate Windjammers in all of its epic ’90s glory, the folks at DotEmu put together a trailer marking the release of the title by releasing the most ’90s-inspired trailer possible.

Set in the fashion of an old  infomercial — with all the neon colors and attitude to boot — it even goes so far as to make the netplay options for the game sound completely futuristic. To complete the experience, try listening to some Paula Abdul or Will Smith while you wait for the game to download.

Capcom’s CFN Portal unveils Menat’s stats and movelist for Street Fighter V

With Menat unveiling today — two days removed from her reveal at E-sports Festival Hong Kong 2017 — people have been curious about her actual stats and moveset, of course. Given that she is very similar to Rose from prior Street Fighter titles, the comparisons are obvious, and a lot of speculation can be made on that alone.

Speculate no more. Capcom has released her entire movelist and statistics on the CFN Portal. As expected with a female character, her health is on the low side at 950, with stun being set at the same value. For her specials, she has her Soul Sphere as a traditional fireball motion, and Ankh as a coinciding input, to send the crystal sphere away and cause it to return.

Rising Up: Chun-Li character tutorial — Optimal combos, setups, & frame traps

Street Fighter V Season 2.5 is out, and I’m here with another character tutorial. I’m putting emphasis on characters whose combo options changed significantly between the updates, so today’s video is the Kung-Fu cop and series veteran Chun-Li. This video contains all of her bread and butter punishes and confirms, counter-hit setups and damage optimization, tools against fireballs, frame traps listed by delay, meaty pressure, setups, and more. If you want to learn Chun-Li, everything you need to know should be right here.

My initial Chun-Li bread and butter video was one of my first for Street Fighter V, made using footage recorded from my time in the 3rd beta test. What’s more, Chun-Li is one of the most changed SFV characters since launch, as she was seen as overpowered in the first season and perhaps underpowered in the second, and has received many balance patches that actually affect her gameplay and goals rather than simply her damage. This new character guide should be up to date for every optimal and practical Chun-Li combo as of season 2.5, and includes everything I initially missed, plus many advanced combo routes other players have unearthed. As usual, I’ve included an enormous guide in the video description. This video is intended as a supplement to that guide, so make sure to check it out.

Currently I’m trying to release one of these tutorials every other week, until I’ve covered all characters. I originally intend to do the characters in order of most to least popular, however as I said, I do want to prioritize characters who were heavily affected by Season 2 and Season 2.5 balance adjustments. Remember to subscribe to the Shoryuken channel, and keep an eye out for future videos!

Possible Dragon Ball FighterZ leak hints at 27 character launch roster, playable Android 17, Towa, & 2 DLC characters

It seems to be the trend that any major fighting game in development these days finds itself the subject of leaks. Such is now the case with Dragon Ball FighterZ, with a interesting leak regarding unlockable characters.

The leak, originally posted anonymously on 4Chan and later shared on the Shoryuken forums, supposedly comes from a GameStop employee who was at the GameStop Expo this past weekend. The leak details the final roster count of the game, as well as the presence of unlockable characters.

If the leak is to be believed, Dragon Ball FighterZ will launch with 27 characters. Of these, four will be unlockable, two of which are the already revealed Super Saiyan Blue versions of Goku and Vegeta. Interestingly enough, both of these will not take up a slot on the select screen, rather they can be picked by highlighting Goku and Vegeta and hitting a button to switch to their Super Saiyan Blue forms. The same goes for the 3rd unlockable character, Android 17, who is selectable by doing the same on Android 18’s slot. Interestingly enough, these characters supposedly work like the EX characters in The King of Fighters games, where you cannot select them alongside their regular versions for the same team.

More interesting, however, is the supposed fourth unlockable character — Towa, the sister of Demon King Dabura, from Dragon Ball Online and the Dragon Ball Xenoverse games. The leak claims that Towa is accompanied by her husband Mira, and acts as the game’s final boss.

Finally, the leak claims that they were given word of a “Saiyan Season Pass” for the game, that will include 2 DLC characters to be announced at a later date.

Of course, since this is basically a rumor, we suggest taking all of this with a massive grain of salt. We’ll learn if this is legitimate or not in the months leading up to Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s release in February of 2018.

Looking for some retro fighters? Sega Lord X breaks down the best and worst fighting games of the Sega CD

The Sega CD (or Mega CD for our non-American readers) was one of the first CD-based systems on the market, beaten to the punch by only the TurboGrafx CD and the Phillips CD-i. With the technology in its infancy, most developers didn’t quite know what to do with the format, and decided to just port some of their popular games over — with a mixed bag of results.

Thus, it’s only natural that a few fighters found their way onto the platform, both old and new. Sega Lord X took it upon himself to catalog all the fighters on the system that he could find, and showcase the best and the worst. With bad fighters like Brutal Paws of Fury making the list, he does note a couple of standouts in the port of Mortal Kombat, as well as the sequel to Eternal Champions for the Sega Genesis. This video is definitely worth the watch if you’re a collector looking to expand your fighting game library — or just want a history lesson in the genre.
