20 years later, the War for the Gems continues: The 4th Marvel Super Heroes tournament at Mikado Game Center

Given Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3‘s electric grand finals at Evolution 2017, and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite‘s impending September release, it is hard for people to look back on the Versus series and not acknowledge the influence it had for the North American fighting game community. While Japan is often glossed over when the conversation shifts to the Versus series, it is important to note that several of the titles in this franchise have sustained decent followings in Japan. Newer fighting game players might be familiar with players like Abegen and Nemo thanks to their appearances in foreign tournaments, but this series has attracted a variety of players from the Japanese scene over the years. It makes sense, given the popularity of American comics in Japan, and more recently, the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Take Men Kaichou, for example. While he is most famous now for being the owner of Pluck Curry Stand in Akihabara (which is essentially a shrine to fighting games in restaurant form) and being one of the early great Johnny players during the Guilty Gear X days, his namesake comes from X-Men: Children of the Atom (Check out his resource page here, and his combo videos here and here).

These classic Versus series titles call to the nostalgia of older players from the golden age of arcade fighting games, but also to new fans as well. With that, let’s enjoy some ’90s nostalgia by taking a look at some Marvel Super Heroes tournament footage from the hottest arcade in east Japan: Mikado!

For the small price of 300 yen (roughly 3 dollars), about 20 people gathered around two Astro City cabinets on a warm Sunday afternoon in this iconic arcade to bask in the nostalgia of a title that made us question reality itself. Mikado hosts events based on a selected CPS2-era title, in addition to the various classic SNK titles, several times a month. This event was particularly busy, with more tourists and visitors than usual. Take Ace, for example. A Virginia-born American who happened to look up the arcade that day and stroll in, only to end up participating in the beginner tournament. “I have always loved these games, and even played UMvC3. Although the recent MvC:I demo did not give me high hopes, I can’t forget the memories I have of games in this series, and I will buy the new game day one.”

This event hosted at Mikado had not only a free play session and a double elim 2/3 tournament, but a cabinet dedicated to beginners as well!

  1. Champion: Momoten (Spiderman)
  2. Runner-up: Dougeki (Psylocke)

With all the controversy surrounding questionable PR responses to troublesome questions, the nature of Disney’s control over the direction of the game, and the palpable drama surrounding Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite‘s release, it is easy for us to forget the precious memories this game series has brought us. From the first time I activated a gem in MSH, to the first time I did a team super in Marvel vs. Capcom, it hearkens back to memories of hearing the Q-Sound jingle, and the flashing lights of the arcade. It is hard to keep back the smile that creeps upon my face when I watch these demo screens, which show off the incredible aesthetic, sound, and design that so tactfully breathed life into characters you only saw on paper. I can’t help but think, “What an incredible era this was.”

The organizers stated that although this was the 4th MSH tourney they have thrown at Mikado recently, they want to continue to improve on advertising and promotion to get more people interested. Regardless, they seemed to have a lot of fun, and I think we can look forward to more from them in the near future.

Dynamite Entertainment reveals details of new Killer Instinct comic

Details have surfaced about the new Killer Instinct comic set to release in August. The series will be published by Dynamite Entertainment, a company whose publication history features many film, television, and video game adaptations.

The writer of the series is Ian Edington, a New York Times bestselling author and nominee of several Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. Edington seems very excited to bring the Killer Instinct cast to life in his own way, and had this to say about working on the series:

I’ve taken a dozen or so characters — Kim-Wu, Jago, Aganos, Tusk, Aganos, Kan-ra, etc., and built a story around them that’s self-contained but can springboard into other series if need be. I’ve structured it to appeal to die-hard KI fans, and those coming to it cold. You won’t need any foreknowledge of the game to enjoy it. Likewise, there will be plenty of nods and Easter eggs to the game for Killer Instinct fans. I’ve had a huge amount of fun writing this series. It’s a fantastic world to be permitted to play around in.

The illustrator of the comic will be Cam Adams, a credited freelance artist and graduate of The Kubert School who’s currently previewing work of the Killer Instinct characters on his Twitter page. Priced at $3.99, the first issue will be 32 pages, the average length of a standard comic.

Killer Instinct #1 will premiere on August 13th, but you can get a preview of it here.

Echo Fox|Tokido talks winning Evo 2017, and how talking to Rick Fox made him a better player

Evo 2017 Street Fighter V champion Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi from team Echo Fox seems to have a lot to be thankful for, in regards to his win. During his post-championship interview, Tokido thanks a lot of folk, including longtime training partner Kenryo “Mago” Hayashi.

However, it seems that there’s one other person that Tokido is thankful to. In this interview with Esports Heaven’s Adam Baugh, Tokido talks about how talking to Echo Fox team owner Rick Fox helped make him a better player. A retired professional basketball player from the NBA, Rick Fox has a reputation for being one of the more hands-on team owners in the industry.

They also talk about Tokido’s performance in top 8, including who was his most difficult match-up, as well as his gameplan going into battle with Panda Global’s Victor “Punk” Woodley in grand finals.

Additionally, they quickly go over his plans to play other games, with Tokido mentioning both Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Gundam Versus will retain its licensed Japanese music for the Western release

Anime fans can look forward to familiar soundscapes in the English version of Gundam Versus!

Prior releases of games in the Gundam VS series in Western markets have suffered the sting of music licensing issues; tracks from the various anime series that the games are based on have been removed from versions seen in Western markets, much to the chagrin of fans.

However, according to Push Square, Bandai Namco have stated that this will not be the case with the upcoming English release of Gundam Versus, bound for North America and Europe on September 29. We can expect all of the tracks in the Japanese version to make it over, this time — so get ready to rock out to anime themes from across the history of the franchise while battling enemy mobile suits this September!

For Honor is finally getting its own dedicated servers, and more improvements are planned

With an innovative take on weapon-based combat freed from the traditional 2-player confines of the genre, many saw For Honor as the next big thing in fighting games. However, since its launch, the game has effectively dropped off the radar — due in part to a community that wasn’t really happy with the game’s multiple issues.

That said, Ubisoft hasn’t given up on their game, and has made an announcement that should address one of these aforementioned issues — network performance. As part of their “road map” for the future of For Honor, Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will be getting dedicated servers.

Currently, For Honor simply connects players together and has one player serve as the host. This set up isn’t exactly ideal for a game that can have over a dozen players in a single match.

The dedicated servers come alongside a host of other changes, such as a new duel tournament mode, new 4v4 mode, a new “Legendary” armor tier, two new heroes, as well as updates to the combat system. These will be rolled out starting this August, along with test phases for the combat changes and duel tournaments, and will continue all the way to February of 2018.

Check out the top 5 plays of the Injustice 2 Pro Series at Evo 2017

Much like CapcomFighters has been doing with Street Fighter V clips at their Capcom Pro Tour events, NetherRealm Studios has also begun counting down their top 5 plays of the Injustice 2 Pro Series events, with the latest installment being from Evo 2017.

Narrated by NRS Community Specialist Tyler Lansdown, the spotlighted sequences include Stream.Me’s Perfect Legend utilizing his 12th-level intellect to score a victory over Big Boy’s Black Adam in pools; NASR|Tekken Master making a breathtaking Magic Pixel comeback against PXP|A Foxy Grampa; Noble|Semij shattering the dreams of EchoFox|Sonic Fox in his quest to claim his 4th consecutive Evo championship in an NRS game; Noble|Dragon finishing off HoneyBee to claim his first Evo championship; and finally, HoneyBee utilizing the power of the Speed Force to conquer Echo Fox|Theo to secure that place in the grand finals.

As the Injustice 2 Pro Series continues to roll on, with the game’s first balance patch looming, as well as Sub-Zero and Starfire inevitably entering the ring, it is undeniable that the hype moments will only continue as the game matures.
