Zeohawk revisits Ryu in this new installment of their Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 video series

With Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 now rereleased on a number of platforms, players new and old may find themselves drawn back into this great game. One of these players is Zeohawk, who’s decided to revisit some of his old “Practice Session” combo videos for the game.

In the video below, Zeohawk focuses on Ryu–who they previously explored as part of a community combo video, made some three years ago. Here, they showcase some damaging combos Ryu can do out of certain situations, and with specific team combinations.

Shoryuken interview: Wolfkrone on Laura’s changes and FGC rivalries

Sponsors need to take heed, because Joshua “Wolfkrone” Philpot is putting his name on the free agency map this season. Having placed 3rd at Frosty Faustings IX, 2nd at Naptown Clutch 6, as well as strong results at Final Round 20, he had already shown himself capable this year. His meteoric rise to the top of the charts at ELEAGUE, finishing at #1 in Group C–which was considered the pool of death–has cemented his place as a player to be feared.

While at Naptown Clutch, I talked to Philpot about his feelings on Street Fighter V’s Laura this season, his chances on making Capcom Cup this year, and his ever-growing rivalry with EG|Kenneth “K-Brad” Bradley.

Corey “Missing Person” Lanier: Josh, congratulations on your success at Naptown Clutch. 2nd was not what you were looking for I’m sure, but run me through the match with EG|NYChrisG in grand finals.

Joshua “Wolfkrone” Philpot: I definitely need more Guile experience. The Guiles that I find online are pretty easy to beat, but I believe they’re not on the same level as Chris. During the first game with Chris, he turtled the whole time, moving back and throwing Sonic Booms. During the second game, I realized that’s what he was doing, and adapted. I went in a lot more. It worked and I won that game. During the third game, he adapted as well, and started pressing more normal buttons in the neutral game. I didn’t anticipate that, as it’s easily punishable on whiff. He won the third game off of that. In the final game, I re-adapted and started punishing the normal moves he was throwing out. He immediately switched it up again.

That’s one thing that online players struggle with doing is the constant adaptation. We were both constantly adapting to each other over the course of the set.

Missing Person: How are you feeling with Laura? You were one of the holdouts last year, even though she was considered bad last season.

Wolfkrone: I like the adjustments that Capcom made that made her tournament viable. The main thing that I didn’t like in Season 1 were V-Reversals. Whenever you applied pressure and were at an advantage, various characters could just V-Reversal and make it their turn to do the same thing. I felt like it was unfair for most of the cast to make you work your way to get in, then off one safe block string, they can knock you down, and it would be their turn to apply pressure.

Also in Season 1, a lot of characters were using [invincible] DPs to get out of my setups. Now they actually have to block. I feel like they actually have to fight me instead of just doing DP.

I feel like Laura is viable now, and doesn’t have to deal with abuse from the rest of the cast anymore.

Missing Person: Do you worry that the new patch may flip it back around, or do you think that Laura will stay viable?

Wolfkrone: I haven’t felt any sort of worry about it this time. I would actually even be happy if they reverted the changes. My main concern was DPs. I actually like Season 1 Laura. I was actually peaking near the end of Season 1 just before the patch took effect. I think I would’ve done well this season in spite of DPs. I was actually getting better with my reads on when to apply pressure. Even if they reverted her changes, I would be happy.

Missing Person: Will we see you travel more this year on the Capcom Pro Tour?

Wolfkrone: Well, you know we all have real life responsibilities outside of the game. But as time permits, I plan to travel as much as I can, and hopefully qualify into Capcom Cup.

Missing Person: What do you feel will be your biggest hurdle in doing so?

Wolfkrone: After playing some of the pre-season tournaments, I’d say my biggest challenge so far is Guile. I’ve lost two tournaments to Guile. I’m confident that Laura can beat any character in the game. It’s just very difficult for her to get to him.

Missing Person: So do you feel like it’s adapting your mobility and approaches then?

Wolfkrone: That would be great, but that matchup still favors Guile. It’s one of those bad matchups where she just simply can’t get her way. He doesn’t really have to play footsies; he can spend the entire match playing keep away from her. You can die just trying to get to him.

Missing Person: At Frosty Faustings, we saw a bit of a pop-off from you against K-Brad. What’s the background on that one?

Wolfkrone: I have historically always beaten K-Brad, even in Street Fighter IV. All of a sudden in Street Fighter V, he started acting like he wasn’t used to losing to me. He acting like he was shocked to lose to me. So I just wanted to send a message and tell him, “I’ll always beat your ass.”

Missing Person: Do you think there could be an exhibition between the two of you at some point?

Wolfkrone: There’s always the possibility of it. Shinblanka offered to hold one at Final Round, and I declined; I want him to earn his chance at redemption. Until then, he can hold the loss. I know at Final Round, I’ll be up there alone on the stage, and all his little friends will run up there to try to coach him. I don’t want to worry about that. My sights are set on the CPT. That’s more important to me. He can hold that grudge.

Missing Person: Something that was discussed shortly after that by Yahoo! Esports was how rivalries in the FGC were necessary, and how they were diminishing. Do you feel like the FGC is being whitewashed to the point that they are disappearing? Do you feel like they should actually be common?

Wolfkrone: I feel like they should be common. It rids the scene of contentment. You shouldn’t be thinking that you beat someone or got beat by someone and be happy either way. When someone beats you, you should never be happy about it.

I don’t want to generalize and say that it’s like that across the board. But when someone bodies you and you smile and shake their hand like it’s okay, I can’t stand it. It’s not okay. It should never be okay.

People keep saying, “Well, you have to be a good sport.” But those people are likely being eliminated in pools. They don’t know how it feels to be up on that stage to lose like that. It doesn’t always hurt to express how you feel, and I don’t feel like you should be punished by the public for that because of how they feel you should act. I feel like players should always be able to express themselves, and rivalries are part of that expression.

While Philpot lost to K-Brad at Final Round 20 in one of the most infamous popoffs to date, he currently has the last laugh in his performance against his rival at ELEAGUE. We’ll see how this growing feud develops over the course of the season.

Esports Arena partners with MGM Resorts and Allied Esports to open new venue at Luxor Hotel and Casino

In a strategic partnership between Allied Esports and the MGM Resorts group, Esports Arena is planning to open a new venue inside the Luxor Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas strip. Taking over a 30,000 square foot nightclub within the hotel, Esports Arena Las Vegas is set to open in early 2018 and become Las Vegas’ first dedicated esports venue.

According to a press release announcing this joint venture, Esports Arena Las Vegas will come equipped with “a competition stage, LED video wall, telescopic seating, daily gaming stations, a robust food and beverage offering, and state-of-the-art streaming and television-quality production studios.” This arena will also pave the way for Esports Arena and Allied Esports’ expansion across America, with Esports Arena planning to open between 10-15 new locations across North America in the next few years. Two venues in Oakland, California and Shenzhen, China are planned to open during 2017, with a touring gaming truck starting its journey across mainland Europe.

“Esports Arena Las Vegas will be the ultimate esports environment that people from around the world will strive to experience first-hand,” said co-founder and COO of Esports Arena, Tyler Endres. “The operation and programming will be unique, as the rest of our locations are very much driven to engage and support local communities, while here in Las Vegas we are developing an approach that will also create excitement for the millions of visitors who come to the city every year.”

The Esports Arena in Santa Ana has proved to be a welcome boon to the FGC, hosting regular events like Wednesday Night Fights and Mega Smash Mondays, alongside larger events like SoCal Regionals and 2GG’s Sagas. Hopefully, this grand expansion across the USA means that more tournament organizers and players can make use of its stellar facilities to continue the growth of local scenes.

Next Injustice 2 Watchtower stream on April 12th features breakdowns for Gorilla Grodd, Firestorm, & Scarecrow

Following last week’s breakdown of The Flash, Bane, and Captain Cold, as well as the Scarlet Speedster’s official trailer, NetherRealm Studios has announced that the next Watchtower livestream for Injustice 2 will take place this Wednesday, April 12th. Community Specialist Tyler Lansdown already promised us another triple-header, with one of the spotlighted characters being Gorilla Grodd; now we know the names of the other two, courtesy of the Injustice Twitter account.

Joining Grodd for character breakdowns will be his Society compatriot Scarecrow, who was recently revealed in the “It’s Good to be Bad” trailer and Firestorm, who we first saw on UpUpDownDown last month. Aside from Steve “16-Bit” Brownback describing Firestorm as “a far-ranged character who has a lot of good projectiles,” whose Trait is his Nuclear Level (which has three degrees, similar to Bane’s Venom), and Gorilla Grodd being playable in very early builds of the game, we haven’t seen much from this trio–so it should be a very noteworthy stream.

The action kicks off this Wednesday at 3:00 PM CST (1:00 PM PDT) on https://www.twitch.tv/netherrealm. As always, NRS employees will potentially answer your questions on stream if you use #AskTheWatchtower. If you’re interested in more Firestorm gameplay to hold you over, check out his trailer here.

Naruto rockets into the future with Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker; Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy remasters the past

Naruto’s fighting future is in the hands of a new developer with a fresh take on the hit anime!

Bandai Namco officially announced the next evolution of the Naruto fighter. Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker is a 4v4, 3D fighter set to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Players compete online with their favorite characters in large-scale environments designed to inspire “Acrobatic Ninja Battle Action.”

CyberConnect2, the developer of the Ultimate Ninja Storm series, will not be developing the new title. That responsibility will be passed onto Soleil, a subsidiary of the Dead or Alive creator, Tomonobu Itagaki’s Valhalla Game Studios. Soleil is comprised of Team Ninja veterans with Katsunori Ehara leading development as the game’s director, and Yoshifuru Okamoto, who will act as the title’s producer.

No release date or window has been given yet, but a gameplay trailer has been made available to give folks an idea of what to expect from the new title!

Two compilations breath new life into the original trilogy.

Bandai Namco also recently announced two Ultimate Ninja Storm compilations titled Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy. The first compilation will include the first three entries with improved graphics and undefined DLC, and will be available only through digital retailers. Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy includes the earlier trilogy, and the most recently-released Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 Road to Boruto. These four titles will come bundled with an exclusive Steelbook case, artbook, and anime bonus disc for $79.99.

Both compilations will be arriving on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC later this fall. An announcement trailer was also released for the remasters, so check it out below!

Street Fighter V servers down for maintenance between 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM this Tuesday

Probably too soon to hope for a significant update, though…

It’s been a couple of weeks, and right on schedule, another Street Fighter V server maintenance window will occur tomorrow (April 11), this time between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM PDT.

Aside from an interruption to the online fight, no indication of any new content rolling out has been confirmed–the improved CFN was promised to arrive soon after the conclusion of the PC beta test, and additional new content has been promised for April, including the next balance patch–but it’s probably too early in the month to see these additions.

Mikado Arcade keeps the spirit of Data East alive with Fighter’s History Dynamite: Karnov’s Revenge tournament

Only the world-famous Mikado Arcade would start off a week with a Fighter’s History Dynamite tournament.

For the uninitiated, Fighter’s History is an old school, footsie-heavy 2D fighting game made by the now-defunct Data East. The sequel, subtitled Karnov’s Revenge after Data East’s odd mascot, is the much beloved–and most competitive–entry in this series. This four-button fighter shows up regularly at Mikado Arcade, and continues to enjoy a healthy and diverse meta despite its age and obscurity.

How weak is Chun-Li in Street Fighter V’s second season? Very, according to FreeStep Dutch

That’s some bad kung fu.

Chun-Li, while dominant in Street Fighter V’s first season, was nerfed pretty significantly in the Season 2 build, and the only change she’s getting in the upcoming rebalancing patch is a change to how many button inputs are needed to start a rapid-press Hyakuretsukyaku, to help prevent accidental activations. She still tends to fall into the top ten or upper-middle of tier lists for the game, but she certainly isn’t as formidable as her S1 incarnation–the changes to instant-air-legs may be enough to bring that result around alone.

FreeStep Dutch feels that Chun-Li is far too weak in her current build–maybe even the worst character in SFV, period. Too extreme a view? The arguments–that her pushback, range, and recovery are all far too poor–are broken down instance-by-instance in the video below.

What are your thoughts? Legitimate problems, or just a failure to adapt? Fair assessment, or biased complaints? Any Chun-Li mains sharing this pain? Sound off in the comments!

Thanks to skyrimer for the tip.

ElvenShadow’s homecoming to Japan has him facing Ain and 310 in Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2

The Guilty Gear SlashSeries continues over at Japan’s Mikado arcade. As Japan’s REV 2 stars regularly face each other in the venue, American player and organizer Mike “ElvenShadow” Boczar traveled to the country, where he stayed for close to eight years. Of course, he couldn’t go about visiting his second homeland without making some stops at his favorite bars and arcades.

ElvenShadow’s Faust faces Ain’s Ky Kiske in a FT5 set. A bit of a grudge match, it’s fascinating to see this matchup played at high-level especially since it’s a very “random” zoning game. Also noteworthy are the REV 2 changes, such as Ky’s new normal move, which Ain already expertly utilizes to keep up pressure and gain a lot of Tension, and some of Faust’s new “Jackpot” items. We see a few of the latter during the matches. Anyone ordered a box of donuts? There’s also a serving of huge meteor.

Other than quick interviews with the players, ElvenShadow also fights 310’s innovative Venom. Again, English-speakers make sure to set your computer audio settings to right speaker only to hear MajinObama’s insightful English commentary.
