Escape Pressure and Block Difficult Mixups with Fuzzy Blocking in Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-

You’ve likely heard of “fuzzy guard” setups by this point. The premise is that when you block something standing—like an air normal—you have a set amount of time where your character is stuck in a standing block animation. While you can change your input to crouch block, you’re still stuck in a standing animation while the blockstun finishes. During this time your standing character is vulnerable to “instant overheads” using jump normals on the way up.

A quick video example from Ibuki in Street Fighter V:

After the cross-up, if you were to crouch block you’d get caught by the instant jumping light kick.

Fuzzy blocking utilizes this concept as a defensive perk. In Guilty Gear, it’s something akin to the usefulness of the jump back + throw tech option select in SFV. It can escape throws while also covering several high/low mixups.

While blocking, you go from down-back, to up-back (+two buttons for Faultless Defense), to back, to down-back.

In number notation: 1, 7+PK, 4, 1

How long should you hold the Faultless Defense for? It mostly depends if you went airborne or not, but if you have meter to spare it can of course be useful for its pushback function.

Here’s an example against a few mixups from I-no, who has some of the scariest high/low pressure in the game:

Considering your typical pressure timing: most characters lows start up in about 5 frames, while their command overheads are typically closer to 20 frame startup. (If all they have is standing Dust, that’s usually closer to 25 frames.)

Starting with low block covers the timing for a typical meaty low. If they put you in blockstun, you won’t be able to jump and you will then just be high blocking for a moment. If they did not put you in blockstun, you will jump out. This will cover many basic mixups: going low immediately, a low followed by an overhead, a (command) grab instead of any normals, etc.

It’s best used after you’ve shown your opponent you’re willing to block when on the defense. If you use it immediately on your wakeup, a basic gatling with a delayed low (2P > 2K) or multiple lows (2K > 2D) is going to hit you. Using it later in a pressure string can be more effective. Know your opponent’s options: what they can gatling into, how many lows they have, etc.

Once you’ve conditioned them to try higher levels of mixup, though—this is a good time to apply this. This strong defensive option is also useful when you suspect a command throw might be coming.

Another example vs I-no, but this can be applied to many airdash pressure strings:

A common way for I-no to extend her pressure is Chemical Love YRC air dash forward. The mixup used here is airdash j.S, j.HS into j.D (for a third overhead), or land and go low. Because the low comes out fast compared to when the j.D hits, this option used right after the j.HS covers both options.

It should be noted that if she’s using other strings like j.S j.K j.S off the airdash that this is much harder. Those strings require closer spacing though, so you can use FD (Faultless Defense) to push her out of range of j.K, giving you an out.

The timing of this technique takes some practice to get used to, but it’s well worth learning.

Fuzzy blocking is quite an asset. It takes some practice to find the timing and where it’s applicable. It’s not infallible, though. If it’s obvious you’re doing it every time you get knocked down, it can be easily countered. Used wisely, however, this can get you out of a lot of difficult pressure situations, including mixups you may not be able to react to.

FS|Milln Hypes Up NEC 17’s Singles, 2v2, and 5v5 Pokkén Tournament Events

Of the people I’ve interviewed on behalf of SRK, PokkénArena’s Admin FlySociety|Milln has always been one of the most entertaining personalities I’ve talked to. When I found out that he wrote a hype piece at SmashBoards for Pokkén Tournament’s many events at Northeast Championships ’17, I knew it’d be worth a gander.

Recently at SRK we have covered the 5v5 between Team Japan and Team USA scheduled for NEC 17. In addition to going into greater detail on the players involved, the Pokkén pro points out a curious trend with the way Japanese players are mostly teaming up with Americans for the newly added 2v2 event. For a little more personal insight into some of the players attending NEC 17, Milln shared some one-off questions he had with participants over on PokkénArena.

NEC 17 starts December 16th in King of Prussia, PA.

New Features Revealed in PC Beta of Street Fighter V Season 2 Update

A new beta version of Street Fighter V was released on PC early this morning, containing a handful of previously unannounced features. Along with adding Akuma, the Temple of Ascension stage, and character balance changes to the game, the beta update also allows PC players to use D-Input controllers and music can now be selected based on the game mode.

The update also adds new icons for players who frequently disconnect during online matches and those who never do. A new prompt also warns of LP reductions and matchmaking restrictions as penalties for quitting. Capcom implemented a penalty system for frequent disconnects earlier this year, but the problem has continued to persist for some players. Whether the penalties will be updated or further explained in season two remains to be seen.

Music will now be selectable per game mode via the Battle Settings menu. Previously, players were limited to hearing the opponent’s character theme during ranked and casual matches, and the stage themes during offline versus matches and training mode. Now you can fight to your favorite track or just rock Guile’s theme on every single stage.

sfvchangemusic

PC players had previously been restricted from using Direct Input controllers, forcing them to rely on X-Input devices or third-party programs for their controller of choice. The change is primarily a common sense one, as it makes the game more accessible to players who want to bring their favorite controller to the fight.

The new balance changes also appear to be available in the PC Beta, but the full cast is unavailable by normal means. Still, some diligent PC players have found ways to select Akuma and the other cast members and try out some of the character changes.

Street Fighter V’s first season two update is officially due out on Dec. 20.

PR Balrog Not Re-Signing With Evil Geniuses in 2017, Wants to “Fly Solo”

In a surprising development earlier today, Eduardo “PR Balrog” Perez announced that after his contract expires on December 31st, he will not be re-signing with Evil Geniuses in 2017, instead choosing to bring an end to his 52-month tenure with the company, that began back in August 2012.

Noting that there is no animosity between the two parties–with the split being fully amicable–Perez noted that he wants to go it alone in the new year.

I basically want to gather sponsors for myself, instead of being on a team, and I feel that’s going to be more like a personal growth of a brand of myself, instead of being in a team and promoting them, etc. I want to promote myself now. I think that’s the smart thing to do in the long-term.

In terms of his other plans for 2017, ‘Rog said that he wants to stream more, and will actually get a set schedule for his broadcasts, as well as hoping to acquire lots of sponsors for it. Perez also wanted to insure that the “retirement rumors” wouldn’t start cropping up again in the wake of his departure.

Another thing, please, I’m not retiring. I know that you guys want to keep that joke alive, “when is he gonna retire? Blah, blah, blah,” but no, I’m here to stay. I will be here for a long, long time.

In closing, Perez wanted to thank EG for the opportunity, as well as his teammates, claiming that he’ll always “bleed blue.” You can see the announcement video below.

We here at Shoryuken would like to wish PR Balrog the best in his future endeavors, and we look forward to seeing him at more tournaments in 2017!

Become the Ghost of Sparta with This Kratos PC Mod for Dead or Alive 5 Last Round

This PC mod places God of War’s Kratos in the world of Dead or Alive 5 Last Round; sambo masters Leon and Bayman are used as the base avatars for the mod, and their stance, mannerisms and fighting style fit the Ghost of Sparta very well.

The details of Kratos’ character design–such as his tattoos, clothes, armor, and of course his signature Blades of Chaos, mounted on his back–makes his unofficial Dead or Alive appearance very convincing, and the Desert Wasteland makes for an appropriate place for the Kratos clones to brawl.
