A Discussion on Coaching in the Fighting Game Community

Coaching in the fighting game community is sometimes a touchy subject, as there aren’t any firm guidelines in place. While bigger tournaments often bring it up in the rules, it’s more of an informal, “agreed-upon” process in the FGC community at large. This is a formally sanctioned concept in other types of esports, such as League of Legends or DotA 2.

Core-A Gaming’s latest video takes a look at coaching in the FGC. They mention the four benefits of coaching: gaining knowledge about punishable moves, strategic insight, distracting the opponent, and encouragement. As Core-A Gaming points out, coaching introduces some problems, like taking up tournament time and having no designated coach from the start.

New Dissidia Final Fantasy Arcade Character to Be Revealed on November 7

Since it launched almost a year ago, Square Enix has been slowly but surely expanding the cast of its arcade arena fighter, Dissidia Final Fantasy. Most recently, the company announced Ace, Materia, and Spiritus during a livestream back in August. Now, it seems that another character will be joining the cast.

Square Enix has announced that they will be revealing a new character for Dissidia Final Fantasy this coming November 7 as part of a livestream over at Niconico. The livestream, which will start at 9:00 PM JST (4:00 AM PST), will focus on all the new content coming in game’s upcoming update. In addition to the new character, this will also include the start of “Battle of the Gods Section 3,” new items available for purchase in the Sanctuarium, as well as bug fixes.

The new update to Dissidia Final Fantasy, and most likely the new character, will hit arcades on November 10.

Belated Spooky Halloween Mods for Super Smash Bros. Titles

The spookiest month of the year may be over, but it’s never too late for good mods. Super Smash Bros. in particular has a healthy modding community, between entire versions of the game–i.e. Project M–and basic skin mods, like we have today.

First mod is a Dry Bowser Clone for Super Smash Bros. Melee. Dry Bowser was an existing mod, but today he is given his own moveset and properties to distinguish him from the regular Bowser.

The next mod is Witch Rosalina for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, which is honestly quite bewitching. There are no gameplay changes here, this is strictly a skin, but that makes it no less enchanting.

For the last mod there is no video, but “Creepy Spider Lady” is the name of this next mod, which sees a particularly spooky variant on the classic Peach we all know and love.

The King of Fighters XIV Roundup: Xiaohai at Canada Cup, Combos for Nelson, Mature, Robert, & More

Fans of King of Fighters have been pretty satisfied with their latest title update. The expansive roster and the prominent tournament presence, in addition to the attentive developers releasing patches for the game, is a lot to love. Below, we rounded up just samples of what the community enjoys so much about their game.

Our first portion of the roundup consists of a few compilation videos, pieced together by 8Sin-Am. Daimon, Mature, and a Nelson compilation. There of course more such videos on his channel, if you are interested.

Next we actually have a player highlight reel, featuring Xiaohai’s performance at Canada Cup 2016. There are some intense exchanges here, it’s definitely worth a look.

We also have a combo exhibition featuring Robert, courtesy of COMBONAUTS. In addition to this exhibition we also have a short exhibition with Kukri, showcasing some cool stun combo setups with him.

See the 2D God at Work with Karin in This Mago Compilation for Street Fighter V

In contention for the best Karin in the world (with EG’s Justin Wong), XusesGB has compiled a grand compilation for the 2D God Mago, via his match replays on the CFN. Most of these replays have Mago facing off against players from Super Platinum to Super Diamond rank, so some top-quality matches ensue in this replay collection.

Holding at 13th on the Capcom Pro Tour leaderboard and a Diamond Rank on the online rankings, Mago should be making his way to Capcom Cup in December–and will have his chance to establish himself as the top practitioner of the Kanzuki-ryu fighting style.

ZeRo Comments on Playing to Win and Picking Top Tiers in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Being one of the top-ranked Super Smash Bros. for Wii U players in the world right now, TSM|ZeRo has been putting a lot of his extra time into teaching other people how to play the game better, and how to have a healthier competitive mindset on his YouTube channel. Today he tackles the “playing to win” mentality.

He does mention what he believes the origin of the hate for players who pick top tier characters in Smash 4 is, as the game started using Nintendo characters and was about fun initially, but this may not be the case. Those well-versed in the FGC should know about the Domination 101 articles that Seth Killian wrote over 10 years ago. This same mentality that ZeRo talks about has been present in the FGC for a very long time, with “cheap” being the go-to insult before “top tier” was a thing.

Watch SSFC2016 Tournaments for Virtua Fighter 3 & Project Justice from Mikado Arcade

Super Street Fighter Carnival 2016, Mikado’s multi-game extravangza, continues with some 3D titans of old!

Project Justice is no stranger to the readers of SRK. The popular 3D Capcom fighter is held fondly in the hearts of many; I don’t think I need to sell most of you on this game. Like many of the gems in this series, Mikado players shine in their understanding and execution of Project Justice.

Because of its presence at Evo, Virtua Fighter 4 and 5 might be the SEGA fighters with the most lasting impression on the FGC. VF3, though, still enjoys healthy, regular play at Mikado. The complexity and pressure the series is famous for is still here, and it’s kind of thrilling to see how present the threat of a ring out always was.

SPOILER

As always, you can follow along Mikado’s upload schedule on YouTube, or try to catch them live on their UStream.

Chun-Li’s Hurtbox Does Not Extend While Crouching in Street Fighter V

One mechanic that’s been in Street Fighter since way back in Street Fighter II is how characters’ hurtboxes would widen when crouching. This makes crouching, a relatively strong defensive position, slightly riskier as characters can much more easily be hit by their opponents.

This mechanic holds true in Street Fighter V, except for one character. As rizhall demonstrates in the video below, Chun-Li’s hurtbox does not extend when she crouches. This means that she can crouch and not get hit at ranges where other characters would be in danger.

This is an interesting discovery, and possibly another asset for a character who’s already considered by many to be the best in the game.

MagicScrumpy Super Smash Bros Melee Mod Roundup: Pikachu Printer, Long Names, and More!

One of the most active members of the Smash Bros. Melee modding community has to be MagicScrumpy, who is constantly fiddling with the game’s code to do all sorts of crazy stuff. Check out the last roundup we did of his videos, if you haven’t already.

The first video we have today is probably the most interesting video in the batch. MagicScrumpy somehow manged to transform Pikachu into a paint tool.

Scrumpy also fiddled with the names, usually restricted to four characters, and made them capable of holding much longer titles for characters.

To wrap this roundup off, we have more traditional Scrumpy content. There are specific mechanics or quirks about certain characters that are restricted to a small number of the cast; below, he added double jump canceling to every character, just to see what would happen.
