R. Mika’s Irish Whip Option Select Nerfed in the Latest Street Fighter V Patch

Generally, Capcom has had a policy of not interfering with Street Fighter V’s balance while the current Capcom Pro Tour season is ongoing. Genreally speaking, the game that we have now is the same as the one that came out last February (DLC characters notwithstanding).

However, Capcom does make some changes on occasion, usually when it comes to option selects. The latest option select that was removed from the game revolved around R. Mika’s Irish Whip. Prior to the change, R. Mika could input her Irish Whip command (forward or back with strong punch) and it would catch her opponents if they pressed buttons, or did nothing. With the change however, the move no longer completes its grab animation on counter hit.

Javits Arias demonstrated this chance in a tweet which you can see below.

The effect of this change is quite the nerf for the move as part of Mika’s pressure. Prior to this, the only answer to the option select was to block, allowing Mika to continue her pressure. Now, players can simply try to poke it out with a fast normal with little risk, as the counter hit will no longer lead into a full combo from Mika.

The UK Gets Its Chance to Enter the King of the Iron Fist Tournament on the 11th of November

While the rest of the European qualifiers were announced for the King of the Iron Fist Tournament, the UK was left in the lurch as to when their qualifier would be. Well, wait no longer, as Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe has revealed that the UK qualifier will be held in the UK offices of Bandai Namco Entertainment in Richmond, London on the 11th of November.

Unlike previous 256-player qualifiers, this event has a limited cap of 64 players, so competition will be fierce for spots. Due to the scarcity of places, the actual selection process for this qualifier is a little different. Rather than simply buying a ticket or it being first come, first serve, players must fill out a registration form which proves how big of a Tekken fan you are. This means how many tournaments you attend, if you have a massive collection of Tekken merch, or if you make regular videos or art about the Tekken series. I’m not sure if this is the best way to select players, but it certainly makes sure only dedicated Tekken fans are in this bracket.

Potential applicants must fill out the form by this Friday the 21st and if you are selected, you will receive an email to confirm your place in the tournament. Entrants must be 18 or over, they must be a European resident and have travel documents which allow them to go to Japan should they win the qualifier. If the winner does not have valid travel documents, the prize will go to the next highest placing player.

Additional information such as tournament rules and legal controllers are all available on the official Tekken website.

Customized PC Version of Street Fighter V Bound for Japanese Arcades

Street Fighter V returns to its roots.

It was a big weekend for rumors: in addition to the stories circulating about the Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- Baiken “leak” and the (since confirmed) news that The King of Fighters XIV was going to get an arcade release, word of an impending arcade version of Street Fighter V also started getting around. Just like KOFXIV, this appears to be true–sort of.

As discussed by VesperArcade in the video below, the arcade release of Street Fighter V will apparently not be on a dedicated arcade board, but instead be some sort of customized PC version, altered to operate in that setting. What this will look like exactly is anyone’s guess at this stage; will it have a single player Arcade Mode, or some other single-player vs. CPU function, or be 2-player only? Either way, this may add some context to the “arcade” reference recently found by SFV dataminers.

Getting Street Fighter V into arcades–in any form–is still a good move for the title. We’ll be on the lookout for any new information on this development!

PS4 Version of Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe Coming to Japan Next Month, with “New Chaos Code” Coming in 2017

Chaos Code is an anime fighter which may have slipped through the cracks for many. The gameplay is in-line with traditional anime fighters but the original Chaos Code on PS3 in 2013 had no online, which hampered the game’s popularity. Modern fighting games rely heavily on netplay to build the scene, so lack of online play for the original Chaos Code hurt its growth.

However, a PS4 remaster titled Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe looks to bring this forgotten fighter to a new generation of players. A list of PS4 Trophies was recently leaked and over the weekend, we have news that the remaster is set to release next month in Japan, with two new characters called Lupinus and Ray.

The team at FK Digital also showed off a trailer for a project simply titled “New Chaos Code” at Toushinhai 2016. It features four new characters with one of them appearing to be an alternate form of Cait & Sith, with both Cath & Sith sporting new outfits. You can check out these four characters in the gallery below, as well as Lupinus and Ray from the PS4 release of Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe. The new arcade Chaos Code is set to release in 2017, so plenty to look forward to if you are a fan of the series.

Land Early Kill Combos with the Stun Jacket in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

A ported over glitch from Brawl, Marth’s Counter has a unique property that if you whiff a Counter against certain disjointed moves, you can then stack the hitstun from the whiffed Counter onto Marth’s next move. The additional hitstun gives Marth more time to follow up with a move like a tipper F-Smash, resulting in possible early kills.

In Brawl, this technique wasn’t that useful as it only really worked against moves like Falco’s Reflector and Ike’s Aether. However, with the addition of Bayonetta who can throw out a long disjoint with her Bullet Arts, Marth’s Stun Jacket becomes very useful in that matchup. By countering Bayonetta’s Bullet Arts, Marth can stack the Stun Jacket for his next move, leading into heavy damage combos, which are demonstrated in the video by Rising VeXx found below.

This Stun Jacket tech is not specific to just Marth however. Any character with a counter similar to Marth’s — Palutena, Roy, Ike, Lucina, Greninja and even Bayonetta herself — benefit from the Stun Jacket and can stack the whiffed Counter’s hitstun onto their next move. Do keep in mind that the Stun Jacket is reset if the enemy connects with a multihit move like Bayonetta’s Up B or if they pummel you when you are grabbed. Do note that Little Mac, Shulk, Corrin and Lucario do not benefit from the Stun Jacket due to the unique properties of their Counter move.

Kidrobot x Street Fighter V Figures Now Available

For anyone who is a fan of collecting Street Fighter themed memorabilia, you’ve got another set of figures to add to your list. Kid Robot has launched a new line of Street Fighter figures, including a 7″ Hot Ryu, a 7″ Akuma and a blind box mini series for all of the original cast of Street Fighter V.

The Hot Ryu and Akuma figures are self explanatory while the blind box series has collectors receiving a random World Warrior when you open up a box. You can buy a pack of 20 in one go to increase you chances of getting that rare Karin or R. Mika figure but with each figure being $9.99 a pop, it’s quite a costly investment to get the whole set. As mentioned, there are no DLC characters like Urien or Guile in this series, it’s just the original 16 fighters from the vanilla version of Street Fighter V. The Hot Ryu and Akuma figures cost $49.99 and would act as a decent stocking stuffer for any fighting game fan this Christmas.

You can purchase the figures over on Kidrobot’s website and check out the gallery below to have a quick glance at the figures before you consider clicking “Add to Basket.”

Danish Sends His Enemies to the Shadow Realm in This Ganondorf Combo Video for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

As a former Ganondorf main in Smash 4, I’m always delighted to see a combo video which pushes the King of Darkness to his full potential. Infamous for having the hardest hits but one of the worst neutral games out of the whole cast, getting Ganondorf to work in the current meta is an absolute nightmare. So, when someone like Danish creates a montage which shows the beefy evil wizard dunking on opponents, it brings a tear to a ex-Gerudo’s eye.

This combo video displays the strengths Ganondorf does have if he gets going; insane damage output, easy edgeguards with reverse up-air, soul crushing suicide kills with off stage Flame Choke and footstool combos which guarantee death or a broken controller for your opponent. While you’re probably never going to see a Ganondorf in top 32, let alone top 8 of a Smash 4 major, you can still marvel at his raw power in combo videos like this.

King of Fighters XIV Comes to Arcades With NESiCAxLive 2

King of Fighters XIV has been out for nearly two months now on PS4. It released in North America, Europe and Japan at the same time, so there wasn’t really an instance of some people getting to play it for months ahead of other gamers. However, a large portion of the Japanese community has not engaged with KOFXIV, as there has been no official arcade release of the SNK title. Fortunately, it’s just been announced that King of Fighters XIV turning up as a launch title for the NESiCAxLive 2 cabinet, allowing arcade goers a chance to learn the ins and outs of KOFXIV.

More information looks to be coming sometime between Feb 10th and 12th, in 2017, at JAEPO.

Persona 4 Arena Director Kazuhisa Wada Wants to Make a Persona 5 Arena

One of the most interesting fighting game spin offs of the last console generation was Atlus and Arc System Works’ Persona 4 Arena series. The series combined characters and concepts from Atlus’s Persona 4 and Persona 3 role-playing games into a unique and easy to pick up fighter that fans of both genres could enjoy.

Now, with a new installment in the franchise, Persona 5, now out in Japan, some may wonder if this game would be getting a fighting game spin off as well. Well if turns out that the Persona 4 Arena series director Kazuhisa Wada  would very much like to make a Persona 5 Arena.

During the medal ceremony for the Persona 4 Arena Ultimax at this weekend’s Toushinsai 2016, Wada stated “I definitely want to make it happen”. He also encouraged fans to speak out in support saying that “I’d appreciate it if everyone made their voices heard and sent their requests in regards to this.”

You can see Wada talking about the possibility of making Persona 5 at Toushinsai in the video below from Persona Central.
