Trouble in the Russian Skies? EX Borscht Dynamite Glitch and More in This Zangief Street Fighter V Mini-Roundup

More Muscle Power for you!

Urien’s the sexy new man on the roster, but Zangief has been going shirtless in Street Fighter V since the beta! How about we catch up with the Red Cyclone a bit? Here’s some tips that both beginners and more advanced Zangief players might find useful.

Firstly, as some Zangief mains may already be aware, there seems to be a bit of a glitch with Zangief’s EX Borscht Dynamite–the aerial SPD. Because of the EX version’s strike-type hitbox, it trades when met with a simultaneous strike–as opposed to the regular version, where the grab will succeed in the same frames. TGL GiefKid breaks this unusual property down in the video below:

This aspect of Zangief’s EX Borscht Dynamite was actually brought up by GiefKid back in July, a fact that he has gently teased SRK about for not reporting sooner, while he calls for it to be patched out.

While you watch out for that, don’t stop working on your combos! Check out these meaty Cyclone Lariat combos from Rafalibe Makoto, some leading into the aforementioned EX Borscht Dynamite, or closing with a Critical Art:

On the more strategic side: Mr. Slay N Man offers this “Lazy Lesson,” discussing ways to build some extra meter while playing Zangief:

Break Up Those Irritating Ice Climbers in the Latest “How to Beat” Guide from SSBM Tutorials

For the latest episode of the “How to Beat” series, the SSBM Tutorials crew have brought in a special guest. To learn how to beat the dreaded Ice Climbers, they have drafted resident conspiracy theorist and Fox/Peach dual main CDK to teach people on the techniques needed to best this hammer wielding duo.

As with the Sheik tutorial, CDK lists each section of the Ice Climbers’ game plan that players need to dissect in order to win the match-up. This means baiting out their wavedashes and up-airs in the neutral, how to kill Nana as fast as possible, the best ways to interrupt their recovery, and which god to pray to if you ever get wobbled. Check out all the tips in the video below.

What “Illuminati Secrets” Are Capcom Hiding in Street Fighter V?

Perhaps Urien isn’t the only one with a hidden costume?

Capcom posted this to Twitter earlier today, and asked a single cryptic question:

sfv_illuminati_secrets_1
sfv_illuminati_secrets_2

The clear “differences” in question are the absence of costume components on both Necalli and Chun-Li’s Capcom Pro Tour outfits–Necalli’s coat and Chun-Li’s feather boa. This has lead to speculation that the modified costume is selectable by a button-press code, in the same way Urien can switch to his Street Fighter III look (hence the suspicious “Illuminatisecrets” hashtag); however, the reduced life bars have led others to consider that the costume parts have been “knocked off,” in a sort of battle damage.

sfv_costume_tease_differences

So far, no one has confirmed publicly which–if either–of these ideas is correct, or indicated a successful in-game replication; it is possible that whatever feature Capcom is teasing here may not even be part of the latest patch, and instead bound for a future update. We’ll be keeping an eye out for the answer!

Thanks to Isaac for the tip.

Massive Pot Expected at Northeast Championships for The King of Fighters XIV if 256 Entrants Met

Earlier this month, we had reported on the large pot bonuses accrued on The King of Fighters XIV for Northeast Championships 17 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the time, the pot bonuses were totaling $3100, with portions being donated by Atlus, the game’s publisher, the Texas King of Fighters community, and Eric “Big E” Small–the NEC tournament organizer–himself.

While this was already large, it appears that there is more in store for this game, which is a part of SNK Playmore’s World Premier Tour at NEC17. According to the tweet below, should The King of Fighters XIV hit the 256-entrant mark, the guaranteed pot for the game will reach $7000. Doing the math, that adds up to over $1300 more in pot bonuses than the original $3100 originally stated by Big E earlier this month.

The biggest and best game in SNK Playmore’s arsenal just keeps getting bigger and better in the tournament scene. NEC17 will be held at the Valley Forge Casino Resort in King of Prussia on December 16th through the 18th. You can sign up for the event at their website.

Check out the video for what LiangHuBBB has found for interesting links, bugs, and character-specific interactions for Charlie Nash. How many have you encountered firsthand?

Improve Your Punish Game with Potemkin in Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-

Japanese Potemkin player Doshin has put a lot of time into his #PlayPotemkin series. Using a grappler character in such a fast-paced game means you really need to capitalize on your opponent’s mistakes. Often times a knockdown or two from Potemkin will incite a risky defensive choice. Instill maximum fear in your opponents with this collection of optimized punish combos.

Punishing Axl‘s unblockable using flick:

If Axl tries to gatling into 6H, punish with instant block into 6P counter-hit:

Punishing Bedman‘s bedslam:

Punishing Chipp‘s super:

Two instant blocks and clever use of YRC allows Potemkin to avoid Dizzy‘s Imperial Ray super:

Punishing I-no reversal Chemical Love:

Punishing Elphelt‘s 5H:

Elphelt’s 5H can be a great spacing tool—especially against a huge character like Potemkin—but it also has a large hurtbox. Crouch under it for a counter hit 2H into very high damage.

It’s more likely, however, that Elphelt will use 5H from a much further range. This shows a way to utilize Hammerfall YRC to get close enough:

If Elphelt is holding onto a grenade, you can use Slidehead to detonate it and convert into a combo:

Jack-O gets her reversal grab super shut down by Potemkin Buster’s throw invulnerability. Depending on your timing, she either gets grabbed:

Or she whiffs and is in a counter-hit state:

Johnny‘s wakeup supers will either whiff or get beaten by meaty Trishula:

Punish combo for the aforementioned Johnny super:

If you’re feeling especially brave, a hard read allows you to grab Kum‘s 6H before the hitbox is active:

Punish Raven‘s wakeup super by backdashing it:

Punish Raven‘s airdash with Trishula:

Use backdash to make Sin‘s instant overhead j.D whiff:

Venom‘s Stinger Aim—a common ender to blockstrings—can be negated using flick -> YRC:

Zato pressure is insane, but note the use of Blitz Shield here against his jump K. Typically Zato will either jump cancel into another overhead, or land and go low. Avoid the whole situation this way, and if you have another 50% meter you can punish an attempt to Blitz back:

Bonus setup: canceling 2S or 5S with an RC right into slidehead cannot be jumped out of unless the opponent was instant blocking:

Of course, the opponent will be thinking about jumping out the next time you try this, that’s where a Heavenly Potemkin Buster comes in handy:

A big thanks to Doshin for his contributions, and his sense of humor:
