Blizzard has released some pretty astonishing numbers for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. According to the press release, Hearthstone’s playerbase increased by ten million players in the past quarter and now has surpassed fifty million registered accounts.

Yesterday, Blizzard released Whispers of the Old Gods, the latest full expansion to Hearthstone, and at least on the surface level it appears to be the craziest expansion the game’s seen yet. I’m still slightly apprehensive, but I do think the sorts of cards we’re getting with this expansion are really going to shake things up.

Hearthstone players will be able to score about $15 worth of free card packs (1,300 in-game gold) during the first week after Whispers of the Old Gods launches simply by logging into the game and then playing nine games in the new “standard” mode. The announcement was made during this week’s live stream event and posted to Reddit by AdamNW.

Blizzard devs have announced a series of changes to several cards in both basic and classic decks. The basic philosophy is that new cards should have an impact on Standard cards and enrich Wild in order for Hearthstone to stay as fun as it is for players.

Blizzard has announced that the next Hearthstone expansion, Whispers of the Old Gods, will be arriving for all platforms on April 26th in North America and Europe and Asia on April 27th. Whispers brings 134 new cards into the game that are “totally not corrupted”.

Hearthstone players with iOS access can purchase a special card featuring Azeroth’s most powerful mage, Khadgar. 100% of the $4.99 purchase price will be sent to the World Wildlife Fund as part of “Apps for Earth”, a project in celebration of Earth Day. Though only available for iOS devices, once added to a player’s collection, Khadgar can be played on any platform and device.

In the latest in a series of videos and articles to introduce Hearthstone players to the new cards coming in the Whispers of the Old Gods expansion, Yogg-Saron takes center stage. Known as The Beast with a Thousand Yogg-Saron, That Which Must Not Be Named, The Fiend of a Thousand Faces, and its personal favorite: The God of Death, Yogg-Saron brings Spreading Madness and Cabalist’s Tome to the game.

This weekend marks the HearthStone EU Winter Championship beginning today, Friday, March 18th and running through Sunday, March 20th. The event will be streamed live on the Hearthstone Twitch.tv channel beginning at 6:00 am Pacific / 9:00 am Eastern each day.

Blizzard’s Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is turning two years old and nothing says what an epic journey it has been better than a video by Disguised Toast showing off some epic moments from the past. In addition, players and fans are invited to submit a photo of themselves that shows their adoration of the game. One winner can score a trip to Blizzard’s California campus with others winning plushies, wall hangings and more.
