Kenshi, Hsu Hao to Appear in Mortal Kombat X Prequel Comic

Much like Injustice: Gods Among Us before it, NetherRealm Studios’ upcoming Mortal Kombat X will receive some cross-promotion by way of a graphic novel published by DC Comics. While little is known about the project apart from some vague story details (it’s a prequel, supposedly) and the folks working on bringing it to life, the narrative will link Mortal Kombat X with its predecessors and even has the potential to reveal early information about the game.

Hero Complex recently sat down with lead writer Shawn Kittelson to discuss his work on the series, touching on topics like his beginnings with the Mortal Kombat franchise, what fans can expect to see in the comics, and more.

Because Mortal Kombat X signifies a sort of changing of the guard, with new characters like Kotal Kahn and Cassie Cage taking up residence alongside returning mainstays, the comics will set the stage for their interactions. “The comic book is a prequel series set several years before the game, at a point when many iconic characters must deal with the next generation for the first time,” said Kittelson. “The stories are self-contained enough to be approachable for newer fans, but connected and expansive enough to reward hardcore players.”

As for gruesome fatalities, they too are set to make appearances in the series, though they will serve more of a purpose than just to sate readers’ bloodlust.

“Blood is an important element in our themes,” Kittelson divulged. “On one hand, it’s a tie that binds us across generations. On the other, bloodshed has consequences — fear, pain, vengeance, perpetual cycles of violence. We’re not turning [Mortal Kombat] into a pacifist fable, but it would be ridiculous if these characters just kept killing and killing without consequences.”

Alongside the interview, Hero Complex was able to provide a few preview pages of the opening chapter, which depict some tense interactions between Kenshi and Hsu Hao. While Kittelson mentions that the comic will include characters that won’t be playable in Mortal Kombat X, both have previously been teased in varying capacities.

The first issue of DC Comics’ Mortal Kombat X series will be available this Wednesday, January 7. The game itself is scheduled to land on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on April 14.

Ryu Lets the Plasma Fly in Post-Patch Ultra Street Fighter IV

While many players have understandably turned their attention to the exciting world of Omega Mode, players like todoro3S have instead taken the time to uncover new technology hidden within the slight alterations of Ultra Street Fighter IV’s main 1.04 patch.

Ryu’s Hadoukens were among the apsects of the game to receive minor tweaks, receiving slight speed alterations depending on the version of the fireball that is thrown. These changes allow for some fireball combos that weren’t possible before and, while many of the strings that todoro demonstrates involve a great deal of meter, there are some options that build quite a bit as well while dishing out respectable damage numbers. Ryu players should definitely take this change into consideration when it comes time to combo.

And here’s a bonus combo that didn’t make it into the original footage.

Bafael Covers the Benefits of the Crouching Shoryuken in Ultra Street Fighter IV

The crouching Shoryuken was an interesting addition to Street Fighter IV. Thanks to the way that the game handles inputs, the shortcut of down-forward, down, down-forward allows players to slam out super fast dragon punches without having to go through those pesky standing animations. It’s also just plain easier to do once you get used to it and you don’t look goofy when you’re buffering a dragon punch motion anymore. Crouching is way cooler than that awkward stumbling forward walk alternative.

Of course, ease of use and the ability to hide the fact that you’re buffering an input are only a couple of the benefits of this useful technique. In his newest Street Fighter 4 primer video, Bafael covers these as well as a handful of other reasons to keep this trick in your back pocket. There’s a good chance you’ve been using this technique for a while, but have you been using it to its fullest potential? Check out the video below to see!

If you enjoy this style of tutorial video, Bafael has released tons of other content ranging from character tutorials to mechanics breakdowns. Follow this link to check them out!

Ultra Street Fighter IV Omega Mode Roundup feat. Blanka Combos, Juri’s Aerial Rave, and More

Omega Mode just turned half a week old and, as is evident from the videos we’ve received, everyone is having a blast with this modern (albeit toned down) answer to Rainbow Edition. We’ve got another great collection of crazy conten for you today, so let’s get started!

Starting off, Tom Badguy (no relation to Sol) uploaded a collection of quick combos for a variety of characters. Guile, Adon, and Evil Ryu take center stage to flaunt their new Omega Mode toys in a variety of different ways.

If you haven’t yet seen Evil Ryu’s new Hadouken in action, it’s a different sort of experience from the standard, or even the aerial, projectile that Akuma offers. It’s a strange middle ground between the two, existing in both worlds just long enough to collide with some faces.

Next up, Indo Imran returns with a handful of new Blanka combos. The best thing about the fighter’s Omega iteration is how normal most of the combos look for their duration. Everything’s completely calm as the electric Brazilian slaps his targets around a few times then cancels into Rolling Attack…then rolls back a second time for good measure.

Things get crazy when he breaks out the two bar version of Shout of Earth to put an end to his strings.

I’ve often compared Juri’s Feng Shui Engine combos to something we’d see out of the Marvel series, and I know that I’m not alone in feeling this way. Those magic series cancels just look so much like the signature combos that Magneto and the crew have at their command. This footage from UGSLive only helps to cement this idea, as Juri not only performs a full ground series, but also takes Ryu into the sky for some aerial rave action.

What sorts of insanity have you found in Omega Mode? Record your videos and send them our way through our tip line!

Ultra Street Fighter IV Omega Mode Roundup feat. Abel Technology, Vega Combo Concepts, and More

We’re now into the third day of Omega Mode and there are no signs of community video footage slowing down. We’ve got a nice spread of character representation in the videos below, so let’s get to it!

Omega Mode was quite kind to Abel, as he received a number of new tools including a shoulder tackle, as well as a new throw. While he did lose his signature move, the Marseilles Roll, he makes up for it through these new specials as well as a number of new link options that allow him to hit confirm combos like never before. As you’ll see in the footage below from spartasan, these tools can lead to some pretty hefty damage numbers.

Fans of classic Abel combos that involve his launcher will be pleased to know that there are still ways to get to that Falling Sky as well.

We’ve got another round of brutal Oni combos today, this time coming from Apolo Loussalier. In addition to combos, Apolo shows off some tricky setups that will allow Oni players plenty of opportunities to turn their hit-confirms into a situation that results in a free Ultra. Some of them are pretty easy to read, but after you’ve been brutalized by the demon for nearly a full combo, getting hit by a reset is realistic. Momentum is a magical thing.

Yesterday, we saw some Scissor Kick loops that Bison can pull off thanks to Omega tweaks and Ricardo Roman has expanded upon that idea here. Roman also explores air-to-air combos available to Dictator thanks to some of his new tools. His command overhead makes for a nice combo extension, it seems, as well as a mix-up tool. As an added bonus, he shows off the Wild Costume for Bison, so if you’ve not seen that in action yet, be sure to check out this footage.

Up next, Draghun57 unmasks Vega’s new technology. As expected, they show off plenty of new combo paths that the vain assassin gained in Omega, but they also demonstrate the new tools in an isolated environment before exploring the options that they allow. It seems that, when de-clawed, Vega can still put up a hell of a fight now thanks to the ability to chain his jabs.

If you’ve been looking for some ideas for where to start with Vega, this video is a great springboard to get things flowing.

Here’s another helping of Guile combos that we received from Zain Jameel. Unlike much of the Guile tech we’ve seen up to this point, Zain spends a good deal of time focusing on the potential of the kick that Guile borrowed from Remy. This command dive kick allows for some interesting juggles and makes for a stylish combo ender in certain situations.

To close things out, we’ve got a quick single-combo video from SpyManSH that demonstrates that Chun-Li’s Omega Mode dive kick affords her an Ultra setup opportunity following one of her new specials. You’ve likely seen Yang perform this sort of thing plenty of times in the past, but that doesn’t change the fact that it looks great when it happens.
