Everyone has a fighting chance
In the recent Producer’s Roadmap, Bruce Maclean dropped the news we’d known about for awhile, Star Wars: the Old Republic would have some kind of Outfit Designer. Coming in the spring with Game Update 3.2, it’s supposed to be an ‘awesome new feature’. Let’s speculate as to how this new feature will work and how it will integrate with the existing crafting system.

I think a change in acronyms is due to match the change. MMORPG has always been a mouthful and sort of sucked all of the immersive qualities out of the genre. MMORPG sounds like a scientific categorization. And, as this column hopefully shows, the semi- or pseudo-MMO market is alive and well within the blurry lines in between genres, so we need some new terms.
All games are hard to make. But when ranking my own personal experiences as a dev, I’d say that single-player games are the most straightforward and predictable of projects (relatively, of course), rescuing failing projects is vastly more complicated, but building MMOs from scratch is the most challenging of all.
The title pretty much says it all in a jumbled mouthful of adjectives drawing on nearly every genre of RPGs out there. Nexon and Socialspiel Entertainment have announced Legacy Quest that is described as a mobile roguelike action RPG dungeon crawler that will be available later in 2015 as a free to play title. If that’s not enough to get your heart pounding, it was also announced that Legacy Quest will feature permadeath but that defeated souls will unlock new traits for the next character.
As with many major tournaments, this past weekend’s Winter Brawl 9 contained a variety of storylines that combined to form the event’s overall narrative. Two of the biggest went down, naturally, in Ultra Street Fighter IV and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
While maybe not as heavy-handed as the feuds of the past, trash talk between players on the west and east coasts still finds a home in competitive Street Fighter play. This rivalry reared its head at Winter Brawl 9 in a big way, as strong competitors from California, such as Darryl “Snake Eyez” Lewis and Chris Tatarian, made their way to the hostile territory of Philadelphia.
The east coast snatched early victory away from the west through an intense team exhibition, but it would be the visiting players who had the final laugh. In the singles tournament, Snake Eyez would narrowly edge out Guile powerhouse Kevin “Dieminion” Landon to take first place for his home state, with Tatarian coming up in third ahead of notable players like Sanford Kelly of The Steam Co., Team PIE’s Zeus, and fellow California native Ricky Ortiz of Evil Geniuses.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, on the other hand, featured the return of longtime competitor Kyohei “Marlinpie” Lehr, still representing BROKENTIER with his capable C. Viper skills. Many would dub this tournament a new era for the incredibly talented player, but someone else stood on the first place dais when all was said and done: PAG|Cosmos.
No doubt a skilled player, Cosmos once again showed that teams comprised of Morrigan, Vergil, and Doctor Doom are still to be feared throughout his entire tournament run.
