After recently creating an introductory guide to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite‘s overall general concepts for beginning players, Unequalled Media’s Tyrant has dedicated the second episode to breaking down and fleshing out what is perhaps the game’s most ambitious new mechanic: the six Infinity Stones.
These six Cosmic Stones from Marvel lore imbue your team with a variety of different abilities in battle, that can be best be compared to somewhat of a customizable version of Street Fighter V‘s Variable System. You have access to an Infinity Surge that is usable at all times (similarly to a V-Skill) and a more powerful Infinity Storm, which is a timed ability that can only be activated once the Infinity Gauge is up to 50% or more — akin to a V-Trigger, or an Ultra Combo in the Street Fighter IV series.
After providing a brief demonstration of each of the Stone’s Surges and Storms, Tyrant notes that the Reality Stone’s elemental Storm projectiles can be controlled by the player: light punch will rapidly launch wind-based projectiles at your foe, while light kick will turn the floor into ice, freezing the opponent on contact and leaving them open for punishment, similarly to Kolin’s V-Trigger. Heavy punch will unleash fire streams that are good for starting or ending combos, and heavy kick will cause thunder to rain down on your enemies, providing enhanced zoning and mix-up opportunities of your choice.
Another interesting note of Tyrant’s is that if you activate the Soul Stone’s Infinity Storm to revive a fallen teammate for a second time in the same match, they will only return with a pixel of health, as opposed to the 20% or so they’ll receive on initial resurrection. Tyrant also recommends beginners to use the Power and/or Reality Stones, as they appear to be the easiest to utilize and understand in a quick period of time — whereas the others tend to provide more nuanced forms of assistance. Overall, Tyrant believes that players should base Stone choices on either improving their character’s traditional strengths, or for covering their default weaknesses. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will be released this Tuesday, September 19th, in North America and Europe for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam PC. A Japanese release will follow next Thursday, September 21st.
