The SRK Rollback: Best of May 11-17, 2018

Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news — and our favorite SRK articles — from May 11 to May 17, 2018!

It is probably too much to dream for that Capcom will officially support competition in pre-Street Fighter V titles on an ongoing basis… but this is a start, and while it’s certainly primarily to build hype for their new collection, we can still hope it will be successful, and encourage a repeat.

Any discussion of balance in SFV threatens to open a can of worms; and while this article doesn’t go into great depth on the subject — and seems to throw some shade on the LATAM scene by downplaying the value of CYG BST|Chris T’s recent CPT win with Ken — it’s still a subject we should keep talking about, as better balance means more fun and fairness for all.

Blade Strangers is the best upcoming fighting game none of us knew we needed. But need it we do!

Yoshi’s comin’ back, and he’s looking meaner and crazier than ever. As one of my SoulCalibur favorites, I’m happy to see he’s making it into the base roster!

Really, you could make a fighting game of just FFVI characters and I know I’d be happy.

This still remains one of my most-anticipated games, and these additional teases aren’t making the wait any easier.

The European version of BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle has a release date, a beta, and a different Collector’s Edition

European lads and ladies, there’s finally confirmation for your side of the ocean when it comes to BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. Up until now, we’ve only heard that the game is getting a release “sometime in June,” but retailer Rice Digital broke the news today on several matters. The crossover game will be available in Europe on June 22nd.

That’s not everything, however. As pictured above, Rice Digital also announced a Collector’s Edition of the game that’s specific to the region. The Phantom Field Edition (available for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch for £79.99) includes:

  • A copy of the game
  • An Official artbook
  • An Official Soundtrack CD
  • A premium poster set of 4 characters in a protective box
  • A high-quality messenger bag

The posters and the bag are different from the US BBTAG Limited Edition bundle.

Additionally, although we knew Europe is getting an offline BBTAG beta, Rice Digital revealed that starting today, there is an online beta for the game until midnight of May 20th (the time zone wasn’t specified, but they are based in the UK). After that, the demo will return to a limited, four-character state.

Stunfest 2018 streaming live from Rennes, France

This weekend is the return of the gaming festival Stunfest in Rennes, France. After a brief hiatus for 2017, Stunfest is back as the first 2018 Capcom Pro Tour Global Premier Event in Europe.

While over the years from Stunfest has expanded from a simple tournament to a festival of music, indie and retro games, and conferences, the event still carries on its legacy for fighting games.

Tournament Games

A number of streams will be covering the fighting game action over the weekend. Stunfest will be providing a stream for the Main Stage (Stunfest2), covering all finals (excluding SFV); and the Versus Stage (Stunfest4), with pool action of a variety of games until finals. Capcom Fighters will be providing the exclusive stream for the Street Fighter V singles tournament. TAJgarou and CanapeFight will cover pools for KOF XIV on Saturday and SSBWiiU on Sunday, respectively.

Neverwinter – Latest Dev Blog Provides Lore Behind Ravenloft

Neverwinter will be getting its next big content drop on June 26th when Ravenloft launches. In preparation for the expansion, a new developer blog has been posted on the official site. Randy Mosiondz provides readers with a bit of lore behind the classic region and a peek at some concept art and screenshots.

The Investigation Team steps back into the ring in this BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle franchise introduction trailer

Summon your Persona and head back into the Midnight Channel!

With BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle‘s release less than a month away, promotion for the four-way crossover extravaganza has been steadily ramping up from Arc System Works. Following a recent trailer introducing players to Rooster Teeth’s RWBY, Arc System Works America has recently released the game’s second franchise introduction trailer, this time for ATLUS’ Persona 4 Arena.

Last seen in 2014’s Persona 4 Arena Ultimax — after making the jump from RPGs to fighting games in 2012 — Yu Narukami, Yosuke Hanamura, Chie Satonaka, and Yukiko Amagi reenter the fray in BBTAG, alongside DLC characters Kanji Tatusmi (Cross Character Pack 1), Persona 3’s Aeigis (Cross Character Pack 2) and Naoto Shirogane (Cross Character Pack 3).

In the brief trailer, we’re treated to various team-specific intros and outros, alongside gameplay clips and some English dialogue from each fighter. Most notable is a likely confirmation of BlazBlue’s infamous gag reels, as a shocked Chie exclaims, “What’s Ragna-san even DOING at our high school!? He’s wearing the uniform and everything!?” Looks like our favorite SS-class criminal is about to be dragged into some Yasogami hijinks!

Finally, we get our first taste of the DLC trio of Kanji, Aegis and Naoto in English, with Matthew Mercer and Karen Strassman reprising their roles from Ultimax and various other Persona spin-off titles. Naoto appears to have been recast yet again, but it’s too early to tell at this point. You can see the full trailer below. Under Night In-Birth and BlazBlue roster trailers will likely follow soon!

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle will be released in Japan and Asia for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC on Thursday, May 31st in Japan, with a North American release for the same platforms following on Tuesday, June 5th. A European release on PS4 and Switch is slated for this summer.
