CouchWarriors Crossup results

While Capcom Cup 2018 and NEC 19 raged on in the United States, some great battles were also brewing in Coburg North, Victoria, Australia, as the seventh Saga Event of the Dragon Ball FighterZ World Tour took place at CouchWarriors Crossup. Tournaments were also held in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tekken 7, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, BlazBlue: Central Fiction, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, Under Night In-Birth EXE: Late[st], SoulCalibur VI, Rivals of Aether, Million Arthur: Arcana Blood, Project M, Super Smash Bros. 64, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. The conclusion of this event would determine the fate of the seventh and final Dragon Ball, as well as whether we’ll be going into next month’s World Tour Finals at Red Bull Final Summoning with four or five Dragon Ball holders in the final eight-player bracket.

rooflemonger’s 12 Days of DBFZ Tech-Mas celebrates the holiday season with samples of Dragon Ball FighterZ tech

Ring in the Holidays with the 12 Days of Tech-Mas!

In to celebrate the upcoming holidays and bring a little Christmas cheer to fans of Dragon Ball FighterZ, diligent content creator rooflemonger has begun a new video series he has dubbed “The 12 Days of DBFZ Tech-Mas,” where he will post a new video for 12 straight days, looking at various odd tidbits of tech he’s found in the game. These are shorter endeavors that are, “meant to be a bit more digestible” than some of his larger guides.

We’re already three days into the 12 Days; to start things off, for the first Day of Tech-Mas, rooflemonger brought us a corner pressure setup for the Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly that can beat a good amount of wake-up options, as well as air blocking by holding back.

For the second day of DBFZ Tech-Mas, rooflemonger took a look at a situational glitch with Fused Zamasu’s Divine Wrath Super. If the falling ball triggers a Destructive Finish upon slaying a filthy mortal, Zamasu will be able to tag in his partner by holding down the Assist button right as the word “DOWN” appears on-screen, which will cause a switch, as opposed to an Ultimate Z Change to the next Super. This glitch also appears to be exclusive to Fused Zamasu, as rooflemonger has not been able to replicate it with Frieza or Goku Black, despite them also having descending orb Supers in their Holy Light Grenade and Death Ball, respectively. This could certainly prove useful for recovering the divine Fusion’s blue health, though it can be a bit finicky to trigger.

Day 3 looks at mixup options for the sweet-toothed Android 21:

rooflemonger also noted that, though he has a few days already planned, he is more than willing to accept user submissions for the remaining Days of DBFZ Tech-Mas, so feel free to send him your ideas.

rooflemonger shows off Cell’s new Sparking Blast corner loop in Dragon Ball FighterZ

The Perfect Being has been improved!

Despite seeing a bit of a fall from grace following some increased damage scaling and startup on some key normals in last August’s Dragon Ball FighterZ balance patch, the latest update actually slightly improved the personification of perfection by increasing the initial hitbox on his 2S, as well as making it blow the opponent back on hit. Though this seems like a very minor and inconsequential quality-of-life change on paper, it has actually granted Dr. Gero’s greatest creation access to a new Sparking Blast loop that can be performed when he has foes cornered or is even in the corner himself.

As rooflemonger explains, the new combo can build around 3 bars of Ki, can be start off of a very match-practical starter in his 6M overhead, and can be looped as long as hitstun decay will allow, but will generally allow 3 reps of 2S. Cell can also perform the sparking loop while he is in the corner, due to his Perfect Attacks having slight invulnerability to air attacks. For a full visual demonstration of the loop, complete with inputs displayed, check out rooflemonger’s video below.

Novriltataki tries to help us understand tier lists with Episode 19 of Exploring Fighting Games

After analyzing the issue of downloadable content from the developer’s perspective, as well as how to escape the plateau, Novriltataki and the Chemical Lovers are back with episode 19 of their “Exploring Fighting Games” series, this time tackling the subject of properly understanding tier lists.

When Street Fighter II first introduced a unique cast of 8 distinct playable characters back in 1991, Capcom created an inevitable power gap between the fighters, as their unique and individual gameplay styles meant that they could not all be truly equal in power when matched up against one another. As natural competitive spurt began to grow among the community, players began to try and decide which characters were the absolute best in the game, giving birth to character rankings known as tier lists.

Though lists are ideally created with the use of a calculated and researched match-up chart, displaying which warriors have the best and worst individual spread across the entire cast, most players simply create them off of personal feeling and power estimation — making them fallible, since it is not always based off pure battle data.

Norvil examines what determines a match-up score, as well as using titles such as Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Super Street Fighter II Turbo to explain the differences between games with both tight and spread-out gaps in character strength, as well as advising players on how they should approach tier lists and theory in order to use them constructively.

You can see the full video below. (Upcoming Episode 20 of EFG will focus on which type of controller to use for your favorite fighting game.)

Capcom releases official patch notes for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Version 03.110

Following yesterday’s server maintenance, Capcom released a patch that updated Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition to Version 03.110. Most notably, this update added Sponsored Content to the game, that will allow players to receive up to 12 additional Fight Money per Ranked and Casual match played — provided they are sporting the new Ad Style Costumes (which currently splatter each fighter’s outfit with the Capcom Pro Tour logo), are viewing ads for DLC Costume bundles and sales, and are playing on one of the three CPT stages, which are advertising this weekend’s Capcom Cup.

In addition to the 11 new DLC bundles that are now available, as well as the commencement of a free trial weekend, Capcom has also added two new stage themes for “The Grid” training stage, giving us three themes to choose from while we lab.

Finally, to celebrate the holidays and advertise the new Christmas content, Capcom has begun a new series of Extra Battles, “Happy Holidays Fortune Tickets for You!” which will occur every two days from December 11th-23rd. These allow us to challenge Sakura, Falke, Cody, Blanka, Alex, Cammy, Kolin, and Menat, all clad in their Holiday attires, for Fortune Tickets. Each battle will have a 100 FM entry fee, and will allow a total of 5 attempts, providing a single Fortune Ticket upon initial competition. However, these notes do not specify how Capcom have rebalanced Extra Battle in regards to the Shadaloo Soldiers or Crossover Costume pieces. You can view the full patch notes below.

Following server maintenance on December 11, 2018, Street Fighter V has been updated to Version 03.110.

Italian GameStop website appears to leak details of Mortal Kombat 11’s Premium Edition

Plus the first look at a new costume for pre-order DLC character Shao Khan!

Last Thursday night, the announcement trailer of Mortal Kombat 11 came roaring at us like a blast of Raiden’s thunder. Aside from the brief cinematic clash between Scorpion and Dark Raiden, as well as the announcement of an April 23rd release date, an online beta, and the promise of a global reveal on January 17th, we were left mostly in the dark about this new entry into the klassic series.

However, an online product listing by an Italian GameStop website may have leaked a bit more information about this new title, as well as more details on what will be likely be packed with the $100 Premium Edition of the game.

Test Your Might user Gamer68 spotted the Italian product description and put it through Google Translate. It reads as follows, with important points in bold:

Mortal Kombat is back and is more fit than ever in this new and fantastic evolution of the iconic title. Now you can customize the variants of your fighters down to the smallest detail, gaining unprecedented control over the aesthetics of the characters. The new graphic engine renders in the smallest details every crushed skull and torn heart, immersing yourself completely in the action of the most bloody scenes. In addition, the new list of fighters includes unpublished characters and the Klassics of the series, protagonists of fantastic movies in the story mode of the epic saga that has been going on for more than 25 years.

– New game engine, with even more bloody and bloody scenes
– New personalization system, with clothes, accessories and move sets never seen before
– New Fatality as well as a new GoreTech system to make the performances even more brutal
– Very strong multiplayer component, entirely oriented towards the esports: personalization systems, daily news, constantly updated rewards and an improved matchmaking

Additional Contents
The Premium Edition includes:
– Steelcase
– Kombat Pass: 6 characters & 6 Battlepass

To unpack some of this information, with the official press release already confirming the presence of “Custom Character Variations,” we could perhaps be seeing something to Injustice 2’s Gear System, which allowed players to customize their favorite DC characters with various costume pieces to create their own individual looks. Some pieces even unlocked additional Gear Abilities to expand or replace base attack’s in a fighter’s pool of moves. The new “GoreTech System,” combined with an upgrade to Unreal Engine 4 should make for some truly brutal and visceral moments.

NetherRealm Studios also appears to be placing a larger aspect on the esports and competitive aspect of their newest title, with the multiplayer component being “entirely oriented” towards it — with even stronger matchmaking, and what could be time-based Challenges and reminders of upcoming events, like we’ve seen in Dead or Alive 5, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2.

Finally, it seems the Premium Edition — in addition to Beta access and Shao Khan — will provide purchasers with a Steelbox case and a Kombat Pack containing 6 DLC Kombatants and 6 “Battle Passes,” that we’ll likely learn more about at a a later date. There is also a new screenshot depicting Shao Khan in a suit of armor with his Warhammer. Whether this is an alternate costume or some type of customized outfit remains unknown. You can see the image, along with in-game screens of Dark Raiden and Scorpion, below.

Cower in fear of all of The Walking Dead references in Negan’s Tekken 7 reveal trailer

Don’t forget to blink, breathe, and cry!

This past weekend was a massive treat for fans of Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Tekken 7. In addition to the 2018 Tekken World Tour Finals culminating in spectacular fashion with a Panda victory by Rahgchu, Katushiro Harada and Michael Murray dropped a hype nuke on fans with the reveals of remaining Season 2 characters Armor King, Craig Marduk, and Julia Chang. If that wasn’t enough, were were also treated to our first in-game glimpse of the title’s upcoming guest character, AMC’s The Walking Dead’s Negan, in the form of a cinematic trailer that was guaranteed to delight fans of the series.

Negan’s trailer recreates the iconic lineup sequence from the Season 6 finale “Last Day On Earth” and the Season 7 premiere “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be,” with several of Tekken’s cast members stepping it to fill the roles of Rick’s group of survivors.

Specifically, Kazuya Mishima is Rick Grimes, Jin Kazama is Carl Grimes, Heihachi Mishima is Glenn Rhee, with wife Kazumi Mishima serving as Maggie Rhee. Lars Alexandersson plays the part of Daryl Dixon, Josie Rizal is Sasha Williams, Paul Phoenix steps  into the shoes of Abraham Ford, Master Raven stands in for Michonne, Nina Williams is Rosita Espinosa, Steve Fox is Aaron, while Bob Richards channels his portly counterpart Dr. Eugene Porter. Finally, Bryan Fury serves as the proxy for Simon, Negan’s lieutenant in the Saviors.

To further illustrate just how closely the Tekken team worked with AMC, Melku44 put the trailer side-by-side with various clips from the show,  chronicling a massive amount of references to the source material, including the inspiration for his hilarious shot at Bob that closed the trailer. You can see the full video below, but be advised that it is NSFW due to language and graphic violence, and contains (old) spoilers for The Walking Dead.

Negan is set to join Tekken 7 as part of DLC9 sometime in 2019.

DreamHack Winter 2018 results

While the 2018 Tekken World Tour was concluding in the Netherlands, the Dragon Ball FighterZ World Tour was making its next stop in Jönköping, Sweden, for DreamHack Winter 2018. This event would serve as the final offline Dragon Radar Event of the Tour, meaning this was the absolute final chance for some of these competitors in the European region to secure a ticket to either the 7th Saga Event, CouchWarriors Crossup in Australia, to compete for the Seven-Star Ball, or to the 8th Saga Event, the Last Chance Qualifier, where they can try their luck in potentially up to three single-elimination brackets to fill out the final field of eight competitors. With this also being the first event since last week’s balance patch, it will be interesting to see how the meta may be shifting towards the tail end of the Tour.

In total, 20 mighty warriors gathered to do battle in DBFZ, in addition to singles and doubles tournaments in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawlhalla.

Rooflemonger analyzes the biggest winners and losers of the latest Dragon Ball FighterZ balance patch

Earlier this week, Dragon Ball FighterZ received an update that altered every single character on the current roster. This should inevitably lead to a notable shift in the competitive meta, as some mighty warriors gain the chance to rise, while others may see a dip in their overall strength.

After releasing a pair of breakdown videos before and after the patch went live, YouTuber Rooflemonger has now taken a look at the characters he believes are the biggest winners and losers in this new version of DBFZ.  You can see the full video below, which includes timestamps to jump forward to Rooflemonger’s thoughts on a specific character.

Once you’ve given the video a watch, feel free to share your thoughts on which FighterZ are the most blessed or cursed in the comments section below. Will you be switching teams or picking up any new characters due to these changes, or will you stick to your current squads?
