First Round matches feature, in Winners, Hitoshyura (Lambda-11) vs. Jyuuken (Carl Clover) and Kazen (Susanoo, Jubei) vs. FlyingCraine (Susanoo, Valkenhayn R. Hellsing). In Losers, it’s UnsafeOnHit (Naoto Kurogane, Susanoo) vs. SuperKawaiiWeeb (Hibiki Kohaku) and NarNar (Arakune) vs. NouaNova (Jin Kisaragi). You can catch the full series of matches, as well as Koefficient’s announcement video about the Cup, below.

Prepare to feast with Maximilian’s pre-release Venom breakdown for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

We’re just three days away now from the release of the final three initial DLC characters for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. In preparation, Maximilian recently went down to the Capcom USA offices to capture footage of the three new challengers, looking to break each of them down before their official release.

After covering a team-specific version of Winter Soldier’s Level 3, when he’s paired alongside Captain America, Max begins to move into specific individual character breakdowns, starting with undeniably the most anticipated character of this release, Venom.

For anyone who mained him in Marvel vs. Capcom 1 and 2 like myself, you’ll be pleased to know that he has avoided the overhaul treatment that Thanos received, retaining all of his classic attacks. His normals all appear to function similarly to older games, complete with his fantastic multi-hitting Jumping Heavy Kick, that will surely provide nasty cross-ups, and his Venom Predate Command Normal. Unlike his webbed counterpart, Venom gets full solo OTG combos off of his Web Throws, and new tools such as his Venom Glide, Venom Barrel and an Air Dash, providing him with unprecedented aerial mobility compared to past forms.

Though he doubts the utility of Venom Rush and the Death Bite Hyper Combo, Max feels that this is easily the strongest version of Venom. The addition of Venom Traps gives him a great deal of screen control, especially with the properties of Venom Web and the amount of things he can likely evade with it.

To close out the video, Max shows off a full match between two Capcom staff members, featuring Venom and Monster Hunter taking on Black Widow and Strider Hiryu, with both squads using the freshly nerfed Reality Stone.

Witness planet-destroying terror with all of the anime and manga references from Kid Buu’s Dragon Ball FighterZ trailer

Another week, another new character reveal trailer for the upcoming Dragon Ball FighterZ. This time, IKevinX turns his attention to the freshly-revealed Kid Buu, who served as the final villain to close Akira Toriyama’s original manga and the Dragon Ball Z era of the franchise. The purest from of Majin Buu before he absorbed the Southern and Grand Supreme Kais, this smaller incarnation knows only destruction, to the point he doesn’t care about or even understand anything else but the evil feeling of joy from causing untold havoc across the universe.

In terms of his Arc System Works incarnation, Kid Buu’s supremely unpredictable movements and usage of his lighter elastic body make him impossible to pin down. Taking chief inspiration from the final battle with Goku and Vegeta on the Sacred World of the Kais, Kid Buu retains his signature Mystic Attacks, including the Mystic Ball Attack, seen only in the anime, as well as his manga-exclusive candy beam.

We can also see his mouth-beam, Gack! and Majin Kamehameha.  He appears to have inherited both Super Buu’s Humanity Extinction Wave, as well as his backwards Mystic Ball curl — perhaps deconfirming Buu’s strongest incarnation and tragically squashing any hopes for a full Team Buu.

Finally, his Level 3 is, of course, the Planet Burst/Super Vanishing Ball, which Kid Buu utilized to literally wipe the Earth from the map of Universe 7. You can see the full video, set to his DBGT Final Bout theme below, along with links to all of IKevinX’s previous coverage.

Dragon Ball FighterZ will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on January 26th, 2018 in North America and Europe in standard, FighterZ, Ultimate and CollectorZ editions. A Japanese release will follow on those same platforms on February 1st. An open beta will be held sometime in January, before the title’s full release.

Some of Japan’s best look to join the Arc System Works Fighting Game Awards with BlazBlue and Guilty Gear online qualifiers

With 2017 beginning to draw to a close, it’s time once again for the second Arc System Works Fighting Game Awards. Like last year, the event will be celebrating some of the top players in the company’s premiere airdashers, BlazBlue Central Fiction and Guilty Gear Xrd REV2.  With both titles seeing balance updates and new characters, as well as coming off of the momentum of fantastic showings at Evo and Toushinsai 2017, this will undoubtedly be a spectacular event to kick off the new year.

This year’s participants were acquired in a similar fashion to the previous lineups, though in lieu of the 2016 Award’s fan voting, the last two spots in each game were determined by a series of online qualifiers, which just recently concluded. In regards to which players will be competing in these two double-elimination tournaments, the Chosen seeking the Azure in BBCF will be:

  • Monster/IGS|Kaibutsukun (Izanami, Nine The Phantom, Ragna The Bloodedge) – Co-Champion of Braver’s Rebel 2017
  • Fenrich (Jin Kisaragi) – Co-Champion of Toushinsai 2017
  • Iwashi (Ragna The Bloodedge) – Co-Champion of Toushinsai 2017
  • Film (Hakumen) – Co-Champion of Braver’s Rebel 2017
  • Meister (Lambda-11) – Gateway to BlazBlue Champion
  • Grover (Carl Clover) – Highest-placing American player at Evo 2017, tied for 9th
  • Online Qualifier A
  • Online Qualifier B

Those who will be getting ready to rock in REV2 are:

  • Samitto (Chip Zanuff) – Pre-Evo Japan: 賽 [sài] Champion
  • Omitto (Johnny) – Evo 2017 Champion
  • Nage (Faust) – GodsGarden #12 Champion
  • Ruki (Dizzy) – Co-Champion of Toushinsai 2017
  • Ogawa (Zato-1) – Co-Champion of Toushinsai 2017
  • Daru (I-No) – Co-Champion of Toushinsai 2017
  • Online Qualifier A
  • Online Qualifier B

In order to find out who took the last two spots for each game, you can catch the online qualifiers that were held on November 25th and 26th, courtesy of Jourdal and Mdesilva, below.

The 2017 Arc System Works Fighting Game Awards will take place on Saturday, January 13th, 2018, at the e-sports SQUARE AKIHABARA in Tokyo, Japan. Streaming information was unavailable at this time, but given that Aksys Games stepped in to assist with last year’s English broadcast, and ASW has been streaming regularly on their own Twitch channel, they’re both likely candidates for home viewing. We’ll keep you updated here at Shoryuken as more details become available.

Cyclops Osaka’s Dogura shares his current Urien Street Fighter V match-up chart ahead of Capcom Cup

Though he’s shown masterful skill in titles such as BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Persona 4 Arena, Vampire Savior and even the Tekken series in the past, Cyclops Osaka’s Ryo “Dogura” Nozaki wasn’t exactly known for his skills in Street Fighter, despite having an extremely strong M. Bison and Rolento throughout Ultra Street Fighter IV.

However, after initially utilizing the Shadaloo Dictator and the Devour-our-ourer of Souls Necalli throughout the game’s freshman season, the “Maneater” has exploded on the scene in Season 2 with an extremely dirty and technical Urien, with him currently being the sole player competing in the CPT Finals with the character. Our own Missing Person declared him the best Urien player on the planet — even going so far as to bet on him as the dark horse pick to take Capcom Cup, in his Capcom Cup Player Analysis series piece earlier this month.

Going into Anaheim, he sits as the 6th seed, set to face off against 27th ranked Method.RB|Luffy, in ironically what he deems to be one of Urien’s worst match-ups.

Given his recent string of massive success, his opinion on the character is certainly one to take into consideration. Just ahead of the big dance, the “Maneater” has published his personal matchup chart for the “Dominating Light,” on Twitter, which has recently been graciously translated into English by HiFight.

He notes that Akuma and Rainbow Mika are his hardest match-ups, while Rashid, Ibuki, and Cammy are “kinda hard,” Guile, Nash, Necalli, and Karin are 5-5, even though he did pull out M. Bison against Bonchan at the recent Red Bull: Tower of Pride event, only returning to Urien for the final game when Bonchan tied things up 2-2.

Dogura feels that the “others” (Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Vega, M. Bison, Juri, Zangief, Balrog, Birdie, Alex, Laura, F.A.N.G, Kolin, Menat, and Abigail) are “kinda easy,” which likely means that he sees them slightly in his favor.

Lastly, he ranks Dhalsim as “easy,” likely making it Urien’s best match-up in this current build. He also notes that he is unsure about the Ed and Zeku match-ups, likely due to the pair’s newness and lack of popularity on the CPT — though he did overcome NASR|Big Bird’s Zeku at Red Bull: Tower of Pride. You can see both Dogura’s original Japanese tweet, as well as HiFight’s English-translated one, below.

If you play — or have extensive experience against Urien — do you agree with this match-up chart, or do you believe Dogura could be off on a few numbers? Give us your thoughts in the comments section below!

Injustice 2 undergoing an hour of server maintenance today

Though we’ve become used to seeing long periods of downtime for the severs of Street Fighter V due to routine maintenance periods, it appears that NetherRealm Studio’s Injustice 2 will be getting in on the action to kick off December.

Gameplay programmer Brian Keschinger recently noted on Twitter that the Injustice 2 servers will be down for exactly one hour tomorrow — Friday, December 1st — from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM CT (8:30-9:30 AM PT, 11:30-12:30 PM ET).

“All online services, including Matchmaking, Guilds and AI Battles will be unavailable due to server maintenance,” according to his Twitter. So if you were looking to grab a few online matches or tackle a Guild Multiverse before lunch, you’ll have to table them until you get back — though thankfully only for a short time. You can see the tweet below.

In the meantime, you can check out the full patch notes for the recently-released December update while you wait for the servers to return. This will hopefully ensure a more stable online experience for all players going forward.

Injustice 2 is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam PC.

Injustice 2’s December update adds more Legendary Multiverses, along with a variety of bug fixes

Yesterday, NetherRealm Studios released the December update for Injustice 2. With the game recently undergoing heavy rebalancing in the November update earlier this month, Patch 1.13 was more focused on providing gameplay fixes, overall stability improvements, opening more new Legendary Multiverses and adding the character data for The Atom — the first member of the upcoming Fighter Pack 3 — who will be released on December 12th for those with Early Access (obtained by purchasing Fighter Pack 3 or owning the Ultimate Edition).

While most of the bug fixes were made to Gear Abilities, Brainiac and Black Canary have seen some minor balance adjustments due to these specific alterations. For the Collector of Worlds, his Cybernetic Charge will no longer always keep foes on the same side, which was preventing the move from being jumped over or slid under. This will effectively reduce his damage off of his divekicks, by making once-optimal damage combos no longer possible, as well as preventing him from being able to keep his opponents in a specific position to perfom extremely damaging Background Bounce loops on select stages.

Black Canary’s enemies will now always be in a grounded state after being hit by a MeterBurn Canary Drop, even when they are not facing Dinah’s body. This should remove a likely unintentional OTG setup that she had access to.

The Reward System for the AI Battle Simulator has also seen some adjustments for both Attacking and Defending players, as winning against a team who has the same or higher level then you now rewards you with a Platinum Mother Box, while losing the fight now nets you a Gold, with the other level tier’s rewards in terms of Mother Box rarity have been tweaked accordingly.

Additionally, Brother Eye has now located a series of four new Legendary Multiverse Portal’s for the leader of The Society, Gorilla Grodd, Green Lantern, the tyrannical Superman and the Clown Prince of Crime, The Joker, so fans of those heroes and villains can now begin the extremely long grind towards some Legendary Gear. You can view the full notes for yourself below:

  2. Batcave – Fixed bug where the camera could lose focus on the characters after remaining idle for an extended period of time

  • Captain Cold – Fixed a bug that could prevent Captain Cold from reaching level 3 charge multiple times in a row when Len’s Thermal Motion Negating Gun Legendary item is equipped
  • Cyborg – Round win animations now use the Dark Matter effects if his Legendary is equipped
