Learn New Characters and Tech in The King of Fighters XIV with This Multi-Character Roundup

The King of Fighters XIV is riding a solid wave of momentum as of late. With the KOF World Championships recently concluding–along with the announcement of new content–it’s never been a better time to learn the game.

However, with a staggering roster of 50 characters–that is set to expand even morein the future–choosing a team of three can prove quite the challenge. Fortunately, the community for the SNK fighter has a wealth of content creators making tutorials and guides for the various cast members, to introduce them to new players. We’ve collected some great recent content here in this roundup.

Following his coverage of Leona Heidern, Ra3bones continues his Beginner Breakdowns by looking at the two remaining members of the Ikari Warriors Team, Clark Still and Ralf Jones. He’s also covered the first member of the Fatal Fury team, Joe Higashi. These Tutorials give a basic overview of each character’s tools, from their normals, to what they can do off throws, specials, supers and cancels, along with some basic combos. This should provide any player a good starting point with these characters; timestamps are included so viewers can come back to any section for review. You can see all three guides below.

Following their Chin Gentsai video, the COMBONAUTS bring us combo exhibitions for Geese Howard and–everyone’s favorite shrine maiden–Nakoruru!

For those interested in a bit of KOF lore, they’ve also got videos of several character’s win quotes in both English and Spanish. K’s are below.

Keep an eye on both these channels for more KOF content!

Titan states that this new series “will tap into Tekken’s rich history, and will feature memorable characters from the celebrated video game canon including Jin Kazama, Heihachi Mishima, Yoshimitsu, Nina Williams and Paul Phoenix.”

From writer Cavan Scott:

I’m so excited to bring the explosive world of Tekken back to comics. I’ve been a fan of the series ever since I slipped the first game into my PlayStation back in 1995. Under Night In-Birth EXE: Late Named a Free PlayStation Plus Game for March

Now that we’re in March, the PlayStation Blog has released its list of free games that it will be offering to PlayStation Plus subscribers. While the highlight of this month is Disc Jam, Under Night In-Birth EXE: Late is included this month, for PlayStation 3.

Developed by French Bread and Ecole Software, and published by Arc System Works/Aksys Games, this unique title sports an eccentric cast of characters, as well as some unique mechanics, such as the “Grid Grind” (GRD) system that functions as a tug-of-war between opponents, rewarding the first to fill this meter with a damage boost called Vorpal. Though the title’s latest version, Under Night-In Birth EXE: Late [st] is only available in Japanese arcades–with no word of a console release–the game still sees competitive play at a number of events, including last month’s Anime Ascension, so it’s certainly worth giving it a try.

If you’re a Plus subscriber, you can pick up the game for free right now on the PlayStation Store.

VesperArcade Looks at Hidden Character Changes Found in the Kolin Update for Street Fighter V

Street Fighter V’s second Season Two DLC character, Kolin, was released Tuesday night; but she wasn’t the only part of the version 2.010 update, as /r/StreetFighter has discovered a few hidden balance changes for Alex, Balrog, Dhalsim, Birdie and Chun-Li.

In his latest video about the discovery, VesperArcade reports that Alex’s Power Drop has had its startup increased from 6 to 5 Frames. This change reverts the move to its original Season 1 status, thus removing the “Secret Setup” that had been discovered, which gave him a 1-frame Cancel window to tick grab off of a blocked heavy Flash Chop. Perhaps the setup was unintentional, but Capcom specifically mentioned it in their blog about patch note corrections. Also, he and Balrog’s forward standing hurtboxes have been extended by .015 and .01, respectively. This makes them bigger targets, but also slightly more difficult to crossup now. Chun-Li’s crouching hurtbox was increased vertically by 10%, from 1.01 to 1.12, which should make it more difficult for her to crouch under certain attacks, such as Alex’s St.HK follow-up to Power Bomb, especially after her initial crouching hurtbox increase in the Season 2 patch notes.

However, it’s not all gloom, doom and despair: as the flame god Agni has rewarded Dhalsim’s devotion by increasing his throw range, and Birdie received minor hurtbox adjustments to the end of EX Bullhead. Zangief and R. Mika also had a variable labeled “unknown7” changed on their V-Trigger attacks, but it’s unclear if this means anything significant, or if they were just small bug fixes before the March balance patch, like most of these changes seem to be.

You can see VesperArcade’s full video on the subject below.

Flying Under the Radar? VesperArcade’s “Secret Top Tiers” That Could Arise from Street Fighter V’s Next Patch

In his latest video, VesperArcade takes a look at characters he believes could be “secret” top tiers following Street Fighter V’s impending March balance update. He feels these five characters–if left untouched, or buffed–will rise to the top, if Capcom nerfs the current top tiers.

He begins with Ibuki: the plucky ninja received an extra 50 health, had her Dash sped up to 16 frames to improve her pressure, as well as her massively improved St. MK, which gives her safe Critical Art confirms and new pressure options with shimmies and EX Kunai. Her Crush Counter St. HK also gives her full combos, due to increased hitstun. In a “bold prediction,” he believes Ken to be the strongest Shoto, despite the nerfs to EX Tatsu. He’s still armed with throw loops, high damage and corner carry off of stray hits, as well as a new Cr.MK link into Critical Art and better overhead conversions on crouching opponents with Thunder Kick. For his third pick, Vesper couldn’t decide between Karin or Rashid, citing recent competitive success from the likes of ANBU|Punk, John Takeuchi and Mago. For his final pick, he looks at Zangief: with many Japanese players now considering him to be one of the strongest in the game, citing Detonation Gaming’s Itabashi Zangief making it to the Final Stage Group of TOPNAGA League 6.

Check the video below for more details–as well as reasons why Necalli and Akuma didn’t make the list.

You can also take a look at which fighters Vesper thinks should be nerfed, and who should be buffed.

Eurogamer Demonstrates why Kolin is One of Street Fighter V’s Most Unique Characters

Shortly before Street Fighter V’s second Season Two character Kolin was released into the wild, Chris Bratt and Wesley Yin-Poole sat down with Capcom UK Community Manager Matt Edwards at the London offices to get some new gameplay footage of “The Phantasam of Snow and Ice.”

They note that she’s the first character in Street Fighter V to have a true counter-special: her Frost Touch, which allows her to punish an attack’s active frames, whereas Ryu and Zangief’s V-Skills allow them to punish recovery frames. However, she has different versions for high, mid, and low attacks, making her one of the more technical characters on the roster. Though, if you are successful, you are rewarded with a hard knockdown off all versions.  They also spend some time discussing her unique ability to freeze opponent’s Stun Gauges with her V-Trigger, and also compare her Hailstorm mixups to Akuma’s usage of his air fireballs.

In summation they feel that, “Overall, she’s a technical character. Relies heavily on setups, mixups and resets. She’s got decent damage potential, but not a huge amount. For a female character, she’s got a good amount of health. I expect she’ll end up with some really flashy combos that will look really great in competitive matches. I doubt she’s going to be as popular as the likes of Akuma, but in the right hands, she could be a lot of fun.”

Kolin is available to play now.

CCL and Problem X Signed by Mousesports as Their First Fighting Game Players

Recently it was announced that two of Europe’s top Street Fighter players, Benjamin “Problem X” Simon and Younes “CCL” Lazaar have been sponsored by Mousesports–who are primarily known for their Counter-Strike players–as the first members of their fighting game division.

Coming off of a second-place finish in the 2016 CPT Europe Rankings–as well as a 5th place finish at ZOWIE Brussels Challenge–and following a switch to Urien in Season 2, CCL will no doubt be looking to make more of an impact during the 2017 Capcom Pro Tour. Problem X got 25th at Capcom Cup 2016, and recently won ZOWIE Brussels Challenge with the duo of Birdie and M. Bison, and finished fifth in the 2016 Europe CPT Rankings.

Mousesports’ Cengiz Tüylü gave his thoughts on the team’s excursion into fighting games:

We have been following the SFV community extremely closely and we believe in the potential. Street Fighter is an extremely fun game to watch. It’s fast-paced and easy to understand as well. I am convinced we found two great players to start our new fighting game division and I am looking forward to some fun and exciting events on the tour this season. Hadouken!

The next time we’ll be seeing this players in action under their new sponsor will be Sonic Boom IV, which takes place April 1-2 in Madrid, Alcorcón, Spain.

We at Shoryuken would like to congratulate all parties involved, and wish them the best of luck during the 2017 Capcom Pro Tour season!
