The First-Ever Evo Japan Has Been Scheduled for January 2018

Last week, we received word of Evo Japan, LLC being registered in Japan. This move gave us the indication that it was indeed coming, and soon. Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar has just shared even further news on Twitter regarding Evo Japan, which now has a rough date scheduled.

One slide from the Tokyo Game Show gives the most prestigious fighting game tournament’s debut in Asia a tentative January 2018 launch.

While no exact date has been penciled in, we at least know when to reserve our flights, roughly. Be ready for January 2018, folks!

Leffen Returns to North America, Faces Further Adversity in Red Bull’s Cultivation: Leffen Episode 3

A true test of greatness is how someone bounces back from adversity. So what happens when someone has to deal with adversity within adversity itself? This question will be answered in Cultivation: Leffen Episode 3.

Leffen, who had been barred from competing for a year, returns to the North American Smash scene by way of Enthusiast Gaming Live Expo–or EGLX–in Toronto, Canada. While breezing through pools, Leffen finally faces difficulty in the brackets as he bumps into Tempo Storm’s Axe–a formidable Pikachu player–and Duck–a Samus main of which there is a dearth in Europe. In dealing with these players, Leffen also faces an internal struggle to stay focused and figure out if he is still a match for players who have consistently been training and improving in his absence.

ANTi Talks Joining Immortal and Trash Talk with ESPN Esports

Jason “ANTi” Bates made waves yesterday when it was announced that he had become sponsored by Immortal. The CEO 2016 champion is clearly excited about the opportunity, stating to ESPN Esports, “It’s an incredibly thrilling feeling being sponsored by a team that stresses success in and out of tournaments and only chooses the best of the best.”

He also talks to ESPN about his goals with the organization–who is well known across the League of Legends, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, and Overwatch world–as being “to bring as many eyes as possible to our brand,” and “to bring a premier championship to the Immortals house.”

Alex Jebailey Promises $1,000 Pot Bonus to Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- at CEOtaku if It Reaches 200 Entrants

The majority of the pot bonuses we see today come from corporate sponsors–primarily from the game developers. While Atlus has already supplied a $1,000 pot bonus at CEOtaku for The King of Fighters XIV, and Degica has supplied a $250 pot bonus for Koihime Enbu, the Arc System Works titles on Alex Jebailey’s roster has been left out in Orlando’s balmy September weather.

Jebailey, however, aims to change that. He has thrown down the gauntlet to Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- players: offering a $1000 pot bonus supplied by himself, should the game break 200 players by September 26th. As of press time, the game currently has 156 players in the running for the event in Orlando that runs from September 30th to October 2nd.

With 13 days left, it looks likely that Guilty Gear will reach the 200 player mark. To help ensure the game gets the numbers to get its pot bonus, you should definitely point your browser to CEOtaku’s website to sign up for the event.

r/StreetFighter is Offering Stream Sponsorship to Help Give Exposure to New Streamers

Becoming a full-time streamer or content creator is and always has been hard work; not everyone has the good fortune to get maximum exposure on services such as Twitch, Hitbox.tv, or YouTube Gaming. It takes a lot of dedication and a sizable investment on the streamer’s part to even get started.

r/StreetFighter, the subreddit devoted to serious Street Fighter discussion, has decided to change that for one fortunate person. They plan to sponsor a player by giving them hardware to stream on, assistance in setting up their stream, and public exposure by giving the stream prominence on the r/StreetFighter subreddit.

The sign-up phase starts on September 14th, and prominent members of the subreddit will be involved in the selection process. They list requirements for the sponsorship as having talent, being comfortable in front of the camera, and ability to travel, among others.

Atlus seems to be in a giving mood lately. They had previously added a $1000 pot bonus to SNK Playmore’s The King of Fighters XIV at CEOtaku in Orlando, Florida, and it seems like they aren’t stopping their giving ways.

Eric “Big E” Small of Big E Gaming took to Twitter recently to announce that Atlus had added $500 to what was already a $2100 pot bonus for The King of Fighters XIV at Northeast Championships 17 in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. This now makes the tournament, part of SNK Playmore’s World Premier Tour for The King of Fighters XIV, loaded with a pot bonus of $3100–with other portions of the pot bonus coming from Big E himself, as well as players from Texas and The King of Fighters FGC.

NEC17 will be held from December 16th through 18th at the Valley Forge Casino Resort, located just outside of the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia.  To register, please visit their website.

Arcade Hacker Project Releases CPS2 Desuicide Method to Public

A few months ago, we reported that the Arcade Hacker Project had successfully reverse engineered the security protocol on Capcom’s CPS2 arcade system. The result of this effort would allow arcade boards that had stopped working to be resurrected by software means, rather than by invasive hardware means that put the board itself at risk of permanent failure.

Several months passed with the team testing their methods to ensure that everything was correct. Finally, today, they have released their method to the general public. While the process requires some additional hardware, including an Arduino Uno board, anyone with dead Super Street Fighter II Turbo or Vampire Savior arcade boards lying around may find the investment well worth it. This could also be extended to people who may be able to find dead boards on the market so that they can get a cheap CPS2 board for their collection.

Julio Fuentes Talks East Coast Throwdown and Tokyo Game Show

After his victory the previous weekend at East Coast Throwdown, Julio Fuentes of Team Echo Fox had an interview with FloKO about the event. Specifically, they talked about Grand Finals with Coin Up’s Ludovic, who beat him 3-0 to reset the bracket. While Julio Fuentes–a mainstay of the Ken Trinity–was unlikely to switch characters, he explained why he went back to Character Select in between sets.

Further on in the interview, they asked about his upcoming trip to Tokyo Game Show, where Fuentes announced that it would be a three week trip to Japan to train. Already doing well in making a name for himself on home turf, Fuentes is not satisfied with where he is in his skill level, and aims to further better his play with a trip to face the best of Japan.

Brook Releases Updated Firmware 3 Hours After PS4 Firmware Version 4.00 Releases

With every new patch from Sony comes another hurdle for the FGC: with the reliance of many players on aftermarket circuitry to power our sticks–and console developers’ insistence on locking them out, we are often hit with things like 8-minute stick timeouts on the Sony PlayStation 4 after the console’s firmware updates, should we be using something like a Brook product.

Brook–a Taiwanese company with an excellent track record of converters and circuit boards–has always been on the ball to release updated firmware themselves to counteract the patches Sony puts into place. Today comes as no exception. Sony went big with the 4.00 firmware which adds functionality in preparation for PS4 Pro. Brook went equally big and released their firmware update within 3 hours of the Sony patch going live. This was done for a twofold reason–the Japan Cup tournament coming this weekend, and the fact that a large typhoon is expected to hit Taiwan by Wednesday or Thursday, leaving them with precious time to roll the update out. The team succeeded under the time crunch, and once again proves that they are the premiere aftermarket accessory manufacturer in this age. We wish them safety in the impending typhoon!
