Daigo throws down with one of England’s best Street Fighter II players at Celtic Throwdown

It seems like every time we turn around, the more we see CYG BST|Daigo Umehara playing Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Between his stream on Thursday with Ogou and Kurahashi, and his pledge to play in ST at Canada Cup, it looks like The Beast is back in his natural habitat.

While at Celtic Throwdown in Dublin, Ireland last weekend, Daigo sat down to a first to nine set against one of England’s best ST players — GolcarJack. Every game was packed with action, and shows not only how strong Umehara is in the game after all these years, but how strong Europe is in the game.

TheFightersDen chronicles ten of the most obscure fighters ever created

In the mid to late ’90s — not to mention a bit of the early 2000s — there were a slew of fighting games bent on cashing in on the fighting game craze caused by Street Fighter II, Tekken, and Virtua Fighter. While some are remembered for their innovations to the genre, and others are remembered for being poorly designed, some are hardly remembered at all.

TheFightersDen chronicled some of the forgotten fighters of the past. Whether they’re good, bad or ugly, they deserve to be remembered as part of the history of the genre. How many do you remember? These might actually be worth throwing into the mix of meetups or even mystery tournaments.

NetherRealm Studios shows off the technology behind Injustice 2’s facial animations to CNET

Ever wondered how Injustice 2 featured such lifelike and accurate facial animations? The secret behind it is cameras, a lot of cameras — 44, to be exact.

In a reveal to CNET, NetherRealm Studios explained that by positioning 44 DSLR cameras precisely, they were able to capture every possible angle of their actors’ faces, thus making it easier to frame their face perfectly on the character models’ heads. This wasn’t all — as they also used four head-mounted cameras to motion capture facial movements.

While this all may seem extraneous for a video game, but NetherRealm has paid attention to a lot of details, and it has paid off for fans.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo earns a $500 pot bonus at Canada Cup 2017, featuring more killers from Japan

Canada Cup upped the ante last year when its $500 pot bonus for Super Street Fighter II Turbo attracted 73 players from across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Japan. This year looks to be more of the same, as the event has once again hit the requisite entrants for the $500 pot bonus provided by organizer Lap Chi Duong — over a month earlier than last year.

This event looks to break attendance numbers from last year — which also shattered the record from the prior year of 45 entrants. While the hype of having Hx.CYG BST|Daigo Umehara in attendance has certainly contributed to this, there are still more Japanese players that have thrown their names in the hat. Mattsun and Kusumondo have entered once again (having finished first and second last year, respectively) alongside KOEMON, a legendary Fei Long player in the game.

Who will take the crown this year? Make sure to put your name in for a chance, as the tournament will be held from October 27 through 29 in Toronto, Ontario.

Young Commander fully explains his unblockable Ed setup in Street Fighter V

Last week, Young Commander explained that he had found an unblockable with Ed, by utilizing his V-Skill on a knockdown in conjunction with the last hit of his V-Trigger. However, it is escapable in various situations.

Young Commander shows that if you either perform a reversal on wakeup or block that has one frame invincibility and moves you away from the V-Trigger, you can escape it. He also shows various setups that work on normal wake-up, quick rise, and back rise, and shows that he is also working on a setup that will take care of hard knockdown situations.

Daigo Umehara will hold a three-man Super Street Fighter II Turbo showdown on his stream on Thursday

Hx.CYG BST|Daigo Umehara is considered a legend in many games, with Super Street Fighter II Turbo being one of them. While not much has been seen of Daigo playing the game in recent years, he seems to be back on the cabinets, showing what made him the legend he is today. He has already been confirmed to be playing the game at Canada Cup 2017 in October, and it looks like he is serious in training to take the crown from defending champion Mattsun.

On Thursday evening in Japan at 8:00 PM (7:00 AM ET in America), Umehara will be hosting a Super Turbo challenge on his Twitch stream. Taking part in the three-man battle royale will be Daigo alongside Kurahashi and Ogou — two of the best Guiles and Sagats in Japan, respectively. Who will come out on top? Make sure you tune in while you eat your breakfast Thursday morning!

Cause trauma to your opponents in The King of Fighters XIV with these Sylvie combos

As one of the new characters in The King of Fighters series, Sylvie hasn’t seen much in the way of serious play over the year. Perhaps it’s her aesthetics, or perhaps it’s her gameplay itself. However, her damage potential is insane, and should not be ignored within the competitive landscape of The King of Fighters XIV.

This combo exhibition showcases what Sylvie can do at every level of meter, from 0 bars to 5 bars. She has lots of potential, getting her opponents down to nearly a magic pixel with full meter.

Juri can do a double medium Fuharenkyaku in combos in Street Fighter V

One of the most interesting changes about Juri from Street Fighter IV to Street Fighter V have been the alterations to what she “stores” in the game. Whereas in the former game, she stored fireballs but had to hold the button she used to release the fireball, in Street Fighter V she stores different moves (including non-fireballs) but must input the motion again to unleash it.

This would require her to have a charge of a move in order to release it, which is impossible in the midst of a combo. However, with the use of her V-Trigger — which doesn’t remove her charges when Fuharenkyaku is used — she can use multiples of the same special strength when transitioning from V-Trigger to out of V-Trigger. This opens up her combo potential a little more, in an albeit situational way.
