Missed Japan’s Best Killer Instinct Players? Kombo Klash is Uploaded in Its Entirety

Japan is not known for its Killer Instinct players, but if a Japanese player is playing a fighting game, he is giving it his all. And yes, Japan does have a growing Killer Instinct scene, and it looks good.

It was so good in fact, that over the weekend there was a large event in Japan for the title called Kombo Klash. Due to the difference in time between the West and the East, it was difficult to watch from over here. That, however, doesn’t mean you missed your opportunity.

Put on Your Wizard Robe and Hat and Prepare to Play Nine in Blazblue: Central Fiction

While Nine is considered one of the best in Blazblue: Central Fiction, the Great Mage has some nuances that need to be learned in order to be played properly. Much like every top tier character in any game imaginable, you can’t simply pick them up and immediately start beasting with them (if you can, then prepare to see them get hit with the ban hammer!).

But thankfully, J Rivera has conjured up a beginner’s guide for playing Nine for everyone to grasp how to cast level 9 S-tiericism on their opponents. Starting with the absolute basics, he gives you enough of her basic moves and spells to get started, and will certainly be delving deeper later.

Shine Releases Official Trailer and Opens Early Bird Registration

New England’s big Smash major, Shine, was already announced for 2017–to be held on August 27th through 28th in Boston, Massachusetts. However, much about the tournament was left up in the air.

Things now are starting to get fleshed out. We now have a trailer for this tournament, already a huge success going into only its second year.

But that’s not all. Shine is now in its early registration period, with players receiving two $5 discount codes up until February 5th; one for themselves and one for a friend. As an added bonus for those faithful to the Shoryuken, it’s also been announced that Street Fighter V will be joining the roster, at an event that garnered 2500 participants for Super Smash Bros. 64, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U in 2016.

Yahoo! Esports Kicks Off “Conversations and Fireballs” Series with Alex Myers Interview

Michael Martin of Yahoo! Esports has been one of the biggest sounding-boards for competitive fighting games in mainstream media over the last year. Because of his tireless effort on reporting and interviews this year, there has been more mainstream attention in the FGC than ever before.

With that momentum, he has created a series called “Conversations and Fireballs,” which gives the top players a platform to talk about anything they feel needs to be said about the FGC. In the first episode, he talked with Alex Myers about the state of Street Fighter V. Myers had some choice things to say and some advice for Capcom, believing that a lot of top players are only playing the game for money and the Capcom Pro Tour.

Combo Breaker’s Addition to Capcom Pro Tour Alludes to No Automatic Qualifiers

At the end of the 2016 Capcom Pro Tour season, there was a lot of speculation about what direction Capcom would take regarding the circuit’s qualification process in 2017. Many people were notably dismayed with the process used last year, which added a lot of confusion. Capcom vowed to look into changing their direction this year, and as recently as last month alluded that they would likely not diverge from automatic qualification.

However, the recent announcement of Combo Breaker as a Premier event on the Capcom Pro Tour may show that they took the polar opposite direction. As stated on Combo Breaker’s website, the event will “earn you valuable ranking points that put you well on your way to qualifying for the Capcom Cup.”

While this statement on its own could be meaningless, the fact that Combo Breaker is a Premier event on the tour is significant. In 2016 and the past, Premier events have always been a direct qualifier into Capcom Pro Tour. This time, however, unless this is bad wording on the Tournament Organizers’ part, it could well mean that all upcoming events are now points only.

Capcom Planning to Reveal More Street Fighter-Related Surprises around E3 & San Diego Comic-Con

Capcom kicked off the 30th anniversary of Street Fighter with the announcement of Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers. While they had said this was the first of the surprises for the 30th Anniversary, no timeline on other announcements had been made known.

While we could’ve assumed this at least, now it’s made official: IGN asked Yoshinori Ono about any new announcements for Street Fighter, and he said, “Around E3 timing, maybe even San Diego Comic-Con, we have one or two surprises we hope our fans will look forward to.” He also assured that there would be more on the updates for Street Fighter V later.

Unfortunately for Rival Schools fans, Ono said that there were no plans for the title this year, despite easter eggs found in Dead Rising 4.

Melee Player Hax is Working His Way Back from His Hand Injury

In September, we reported on Super Smash Bros. Melee player Aziz “Hax” Al-yani, and his hand injury. As was reported then, he has been suffering from a calcified flexor carpi ulnaris in his forearm, and it has been a long road back since.

Hax, however, has refused to give up. Having found a surgeon that would operate on his wrist, Al-yani has made adjustments to alleviate the strain placed from the GameCube controller for Smash players. His most notable adjustment has been to not only adopt the Smash Box, but contribute to the development of the controller.

However, unhappy with the pace of development of the Smash Box, he has since forked the project into his “B0XX” project, with the help of engineers from Rutgers University.

Think Grabs are Completely Safe in Super Street Fighter II Turbo? Think Again!

Grabs are a very powerful tool in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. They deal a great deal of damage if not teched, and still deal damage even if they are. Some characters even live and die by their grabs, using tick throw traps to take rounds. They are also projectile invincible on startup!

While grabs are strong, they are still not perfect. Grabs in ST, most notably mash grabs–which deal multiple hits of damage depending on how hard you and your opponent mash–often have zero frames of recovery once the grab connects. For mash grabs, this means that you most definitely will be hit if the tail of a projectile is still within your hurtbox after it connects. Thus, if you and your opponent are both low on life, you could quite possibly end up facing a double KO for your troubles.

PR Balrog Collects Fight Money against Chris Tatarian in These Street Fighter V Online Matches

PR Balrog is certainly benefiting from the changes in Street Fighter V. His Balrog has gotten stronger, and with the buffs that the boxer has received, he can be predicted to be a dangerous individual in the 2017 Capcom Pro Tour season.

Chris Tatarian was already dangerous last year, as one half of the Ken Trinity that made their way into Capcom Cup. Easily becoming one of the plethora of American players now viewed as a threat worldwide, how will Tatarian respond when the old guard takes him to task?
