Punch Planet updates to version 0.4.1.a, adds online lobby/spectator modes

Punch Planet is an Early Access Sci-Fi fighter in development from 3-man indie studio Sector-K Games. You may already be familiar with them thanks to their active presence — and character reveals — on the floor at Evo 2017 and Evo 2018. The latest version of Punch Planet just dropped today on Steam, and it includes some dramatic new changes to its online functionality: the addition of Online Lobbies and Spectating.

Players can now compete in rotation king-of-the-hill style with up to 7 other players, and spectate matches that are in progress.

Current features of the lobby system:

  • Players can leave the rotation if they wish to only spectate
  • If only two players are in the rotation, players can rematch as much as they want
  • Players will be automatically skipped if AFK
  • Lobbies can be private and steam friends can be invited / join
  • Steam profiles can now be viewed
  • Total amount of players online is now shown

The developers at Sector-K promise that this is just the beginning of their plans for the online mode — they have future plans for matchmaking queues, data/rank tracking, and more in the works.

In addition to the new functionality of online mode, there’s several game-play and graphical updates in the new patch. You can read the additions and balance changes for the latest version here, and purchase the game here.

Wizzrobe explains how to avoid buffered rolls in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Because of the new buffering window in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there’s been an uptick in unintentional buffered actions across all levels of play. Smash community star Wizzrobe has experienced this too, particularly with the way the game accepts roll inputs:

When it comes to rolls, at least, the problem likely boils down to holding shield too long. Wizzrobe breaks down the way the game is accepting these inputs in his latest video for Most Valuable Gaming, which you can check out above.

Inkling’s roller causes inconsistent and potentially glitchy interactions in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Inklings side special in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is their trademark Roller, which covers the ground with ink. Nintendo decided that the ink should interact with the physics of other special moves, and… perhaps you should judge for yourself if these interactions were intentional:

It would appear that the ink decreases horizontal distance traveled while either decreasing or increasing vertical distance. This seems to be selectively applied, however, on a move-by-move basis. Moves with slides appear to increase their slide distance dramatically, such as Meta Knight’s teleport, while others might get stuck all-together, such as Jigglypuff’s roll.

So while the latest Fatal Fury Special tournament was no surprise on Mikado’s event list…

Blade Smash, a new mobile platform fighter that features SNK’s Nakoruru as a guest character, likely caught a few off guard. Audience and Player alike.

1-Minute Tech series shows off important high level tech for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Robin

Fire Emblem Tactician Robin comes with one of the widest toolkits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This is primarily thanks to his multiple magic-spitting tomes — and with such a wide arsenal, comes an even wider array of ways to use these spells on the battlefield.

In the playlist above, you’ll find the “1-Minute Tech” series produced by Mad Ice King. These videos quickly condense complicated topics — such as Robin’s Elwind Cancels and Instant Tome Pickups — so that you can become a fearsome Grandmaster with one of Smash’s most unique characters.

New Super Smash Bros. Ultimate “Attack Cancel” tech allows new dashing approaches, Rosalina death combo

Some of the most wild tech from the Smash community in the past came from My Smash Corner, who has, up until now, been largely silent on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As it turns out, they were just preparing a video on a game-changing mechanic: Attack Canceling.

Smash Ultimate allows you to cancel the startup of dash attacks, jabs, and other moves with a jump during their startup. This quirk allows players to get access to safer types of aerial attacks, instant b-airs, and for Rosalina players, a brand new combo tool. Check out the video above and get into training mode: If you play Ultimate, you’ll want to know how to do this.

Omen of Sorrow announces free DLC character Erzébet Bathory for January 2019, future DLC plans

Omen of Sorrow‘s Erzébet Bathory was always a likely choice for the first DLC character: she features somewhat prominently in its story mode and was one of the most requested characters upon release. Her announcement today as the first of AOne Games’s “Season 1” DLC characters may not be a surprise, but the fact that she’s absolutely free, is:

On top of that, AOne Games intends to release all future DLC characters for free, as well. It’s pure speculation, but the glyph graphic at the end of  Erzébet’s trailer above indicates that we have three more DLC characters on the way. Not bad!
