Nicalis shares interview with Studio Saizensen, developers of “Blade Strangers”

Nicalis’s Blade Strangers has emerged as a very interesting underdog in the fighting game landscape. The new 2D fighter gained big media attention with cross-over character reveals from popular game series like Shovel Knight, Cave Story, The Binding of Isaac, and more.

In Blade Strangers case, though, Nicalis is just the publisher — the developer is Studio Saizensen, likely best known for the RPG series Code of Princess, and only barely known for their one fighting game, Blade Arcus. Both Nicalis and Studio Saizensen are confident in their collaboration, though, and have released an interview on Nicalis’s blog detailing Studio Saizensen’s love affair with the Fighting Game genre — and how criticism received from Blade Arcus helped shape the development of Blade Strangers.  Director Toshinobu Kondo recalls:

“I have great memories of the all-nighter versus tournaments that I used to run every weekend at my home! Also, winning third place in the official World Heroes Tournament, and going all the way up to Rank 20 in Street Fighter IV in the Asia region as Ken; those are both fond memories, too.”

You can read the full interview over on Nicalis’s blog.

World Warrior shows off Ken’s VTC Light Tatsu options for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

There may not be anyone hungrier on the internet for developing Ken tech than World Warrior FGC. It seems like there’s always something new coming from his (likely engulfed in flames) Ken lab… Today’s experiment? Light Tatsumaki juggle options post Step Kick VTC.

Check out the video above to see the versatility World Warrior is able to squeeze out from this VTC. Not just a combo tool, the LK Tatsu allows Ken to work a number of counter-hit traps and mix-ups on opponents unsure of how to deal with Ken’s many reset options.

BornFree interviews The King of Fighters and Dragon Ball FighterZ pro Reynald at Combo Breaker 2018

“I went to the arcade almost single day. That’s what it was, back then.”

That’s Reynald’s simple reply to the question “When you decided you wanted to get good, what did you do?” Within that answer is both a reflection of his roots and his boiled down approach to fighting games — and it’s just one of the nuggets of wisdom dispensed in his latest interview with BornFree.

Reynald, a former The King of Fighters XIII Evo Champ and multi-game specialist, shares his thoughts on training, player reading, and his constantly evolving DBFZ team.

NurseLee shows off some setups following Cammy’s Cross Scissors grab in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Unless you yourself are a Cammy player, you may not be too thrilled to know that NurseLee has developed some exceptional setups for Cammy’s Cross Scissors command grab. If you are a Cammy player, though, I have some great news.

Cammy’s Cross Scissors gives enough frame advantage to allow her to work a wide variety of counter-hit and grab setups. Keep in mind of how your opponent likes to get up off the ground, and you can get them close to stun quickly, all thanks to one little combo-able air throw.

Send Noctis back to Square Enix with this Tekken 7 Steve Fox punish guide

Steve Fox isn’t known as one of Tekken 7‘s strongest punishment characters. That’s only because this boxer is built differently from the rest of the cast, and giving him a a standard punishment game would probably break him as a character. Instead, Steve can weave around his opponent’s options, making him a proper threat in the hands of those with very good defense.

Because of his unique nature, it’s especially important to know how to properly punish odd characters like Noctis, whose push-out and gimmicks fit the mold of Tekken even less than Steve’s abilities do. Fighters Generation‘s latest punishment tutorial shows off proper punishment and step versus the entire move-list of the Final Fantasy XV protagonist, so if you’re a Steve main, you owe it to yourself to check this out.

Indie flying-fighter Gravity Breakers version 0.3 goes live, adds alien drone grappler Gerzil

The in-development perma-flying PC fighter Gravity Breakers has recently been updated to version 0.3. Along with the several system and balancing changes in this update, this indie sci-fi project has implemented its latest character: the alien drone Gerzil.

Gerzil has previously been seen showcased at the weekly SoCal fighting game competition Wednesday Night Fights, as well as through Gremlin’s Twitch and social media channels.

The developers shared some info on Gerzil’s battle design, and the new elements she brings to the cast:

Gerzil’s fighting style is savage and bloody, revolving around her ripping claws and retractable spikes. She is the first character with a grab-type special move: Monster Clutch. This move is still WIP but the final version will drain life from the opponent like a vampire. From a distance Gerzil fires webs, spikes, and insects.

Grappling archetypes tend to be hearty tanks, but interestingly, it seems Gerzil only gets her additional health through her grappling. This justifies her ability to be a little more mobile and versatile — appropriate for the projectile-centered battlefield of Gravity Breakers.

You can read the full list of balance changes — and purchase the early-access version of the game — through Gremlin_Ent’s site. For more information on the game itself, make sure to visit gravitybreakers.com.

Master Braixen’s flame in Pokkén Tournament DX with these Duel Phase combos from 21 Hits

Braixen has been one of Pokkén’s strongest characters, even in the latest version Pokkén Tournament DX. If you were looking to get into the game with a versatile and tech-heavy character, 21 Hits‘s latest combo video can help you get in on the ground floor.

Despite these combos dealing great damage and often times setting up terrifying mix-up situations, the biggest selling point is that this is just the beginning of learning this character. When you combine these rewards with Braixen’s unique support-canceling strengths, you have a convincing case for making Braixen the go-to choice for learning the ins-and-outs of the way DX is played.
