Street Fighter V Wins Best Fighting Game at “The Game Awards”

Street Fighter V has had something of a rocky time in its first year. The game launched with what many felt was not enough content–particularly single player modes–and left a bad taste in many players’ mouths. However, Capcom has spent the past ten months supporting the game, adding more and more content.

It seems that that work has paid off: at tonight’s The Game Awards, Street Fighter V won the Best Fighting Game award. The game beat out other nominees Killer Instinct Season 3, Pokkén Tournament, and The King of Fighters XIV.

This win is notable in that the choice comes on a wave of community support, with fans supporting the game on Twitter with the hashtag #TGAStreetFighterV right up to the start of the show. This shows how much support the game actually has in the community, despite the issues that it had at launch.

Razer Announces the Panthera: Their New Arcade Stick for the PlayStation 4

After months of speculation and prototype sightings in the wild, Razer has finally officially unveiled their new arcade stick. Called the Panthera, this new arcade stick represents Razer’s second ever PlayStation controller (following the Raiju game pad) and their first arcade stick for Sony’s console.

As we’ve already seen from the prototypes that Razer’s players have been testing at tournaments, the Panthera shares the basic shape of their previous stick, the Atrox. New to the Panthera is a larger, center mounted control section featuring a touchpad as well as L3 and R3 buttons. Aside from the PlayStation 4, the Panthera is also compatible with the PlayStation 3 and PC.

Razer has released the following images of the Panthera as well as these statements from their sponsored players Lee “Infiltration” Seon-woo and Ho Kun Xian.

Mark “MarkMan” Julio Is Now the Fighting Game Community and Product Consultant for Razer

Mark “MarkMan” Julio is someone who has done a lot for the fighting game community; formerly with MadCatz–being instrumental in the development of their arcade sticks–MarkMan later moved on to both take care of Business Development for Evo, as well as act as the Brand & Community Advisor for Tekken at Namco. It seems, however, that MarkMan still has more to give as he has taken on yet another role with another company.

MarkMan has has recently announced that he is now working with Razer as their Fighting Game Community and Product Consultant. As part of this, he will be working closely with the peripheral manufacturer on all their new initiatives related to the fighting game community.

This is great news for both Razer and the fighting game community as a whole. While they’ve been quite on the fighting game front for most of the year, Razer has been continuing to support the community with their sponsorships and move to create products for the PlayStation 4 (the current, tournament standard console). Meanwhile, MarkMan’s passion for fighting games and contributions to the community are already well documented.

We here at Shoryuken wish MarkMan and Razer the best in this new relationship.

Learn to Play Ryo in The King of Fighters XIV with This Extensive Beginner’s Guide

More often than not, players coming in to The King of Fighters XIV from games such as Street Fighter will gravitate towards Ryo Sakazaki. He sports a familiar and comfortable design that directly apes that of Street Fighter’s “shoto” characters, Ryu and Ken. That said, newcomers will find that they won’t get too far playing Ryo as they would the former.

For those looking to properly learn to play Ryo, Gillstolemyride has put up this extensive beginner’s guide to the character. The tutorial–which you can watch below–covers a good amount of material that players will need to be successful with Ryo. Take note however, that the video is quite long, so be sure to set aside some time for this one!

Street Fighter V Update Version 1.13 Is Out Now, Prepares the Ring of Destiny for Capcom Cup

Alongside tonight’s server maintenance, Street Fighter V has a new update available for download. The new update brings the game up to version 1.13 and clocks in at around 1 gigabyte.

So far, the only noticeable update is that the Ring of Destiny stage now sports Capcom Cup markings. Whether or not there are other additions to the game are yet unknown. While the 1 gigabyte size may seem large, the way the engine updates on the system means that it has to download entire .PAK files for even just minor changes to the contents within.

Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono and Capcom Cup Finalists to Be Part of Meet-and-Greet Session at PlayStation Experience

At this weekend’s PlayStation Experience, Sony will be hosting a special meet-and-greet and autograph session with several video game personalities; this will be the first time ever such a session will be held at PSX.

With Street Fighter V and Capcom Cup being a part of PlayStation Experience, it should come as no surprise then that Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono will be a part of this meet-and-greet and autograph session. In addition to Ono however, the finalists of Capcom Cup will also be a part of this event.

Being able to openly approach and interact with top players as peers is a hallmark of the fighting game community. That said, this offers fans from outside the community who may not exactly be familiar with our culture and conventions an opportunity to meet some of our best players.

The meet-and-greet and autograph session with creators at PlayStation Experience will take place on December 3, Saturday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Yoshinori Ono and the Capcom Cup finalists’ timeslot will be from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

New King of Fighters XIV Version 1.10 Screenshots Hint at Just How Much the Game’s Graphics Are Improving

As you may already know, SNK announced that they would be adding graphical upgrades to King of Fighters XIV with update version 1.10. The update itself is set to be playable at the PlayStation Experience later this weekend.

To whet the appetites of those looking forward to the update, SNK has released a couple more teaser screenshots, showing Sylvie and Xanadu in the new build. You can see these screenshots below.

The great thing about these is that they’re similar to early promo that SNK put out early this year. This means that a direct comparison can be made, such as what Gatoray has done below.

Here, we can clearly see the updates to the game’s lighting system, most noticeably the improved self-shadowing on Sylvie and Xanadu. Additionally, there also seems to be changes to the way the engine handles transparent materials.

We’ll get to see more of KOFXIV’s graphical update at this weekend’s PlayStation Experience.
