Use Pre-Jump Frames to Beat Meaty Throws in Street Fighter V

Meaty throws can be a powerful tool in Street Fighter V. Aside from the fact that the game does not have the same crouch tech option select as its predecessor, more than a few reversals also lack throw invulnerability on startup.

However, it seems that a way to beat meaty throws by making certain “reversals” invulnerable exists in the game, as Magus1234 demonstrates in the video below.

R.Mika’s EX Shooting Peach is normally not throw invulnerable, and you can see it get thrown when he tries to perform it normally. But later on, it comes out without being thrown. This is because Magus1234 is actually jumping on wakeup and then canceling the jump into EX Shooting Peach.

For those wondering how this works, Sleazoid has provided a detailed breakdown in our forums. This technique is based on the fact that most fighting games give their characters a certain number of pre-jump animation frames before they actually move. While characters are still grounded during these pre-jump frames, they system also counts them as already being in an airborne state, and characters in an airborne state cannot be thrown with grounded throws. By inputting the motion of the move, and then hitting up or up forward before hitting the attack button for it, characters will go into the pre-jump frames before the move comes out.

Combined with certain moves, this technique gives certain characters a very reliable way to beat meaty pressure. That said, these can still be beaten by the standing opponent simply baiting the reversal out and blocking it.

Kane Blueriver Talks Winter Brawl X, Filipino Champ, and More with Hold Back to Block

As one of the first major tournaments he’s attended since winning Evo 2015, Team Black Eye’s Nicolas “Kane Blueriver” Gonazalez had a lot on his plate at Winter Brawl X this past weekend. In addition to “defending” his title, he was also primed to compete in a high-profile exhibition against Panda Global’s Ryan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez.

After the event, Hold Back to Block got a chance to talk to Kane about his experience, which included a loss to Filipino Champ in the exhibition but a first-place finish in the actual tournament. Overall, he mentions being thankful that he got a chance to see how he measured up to a player of Champ’s calibre.

Kane also took some time to talk about Evo 2015 and his reaction to winning. He states that he thought he would feel different, but then realized that it wasn’t so much about winning than it was about moving on and becoming a stronger player.

Of course, this is just part of their discussion, so be sure to check out the entire interview below.

Killer Instinct Team Discusses Bringing Halo’s Arbiter to Season 3

Killer Instinct Season 3 won’t be the first time a Halo character will be making the jump into fighting games, but that doesn’t mean we expected the Arbiter to join the roster when the game first launched. The team behind the Arbiter’s inclusion recently got a chance to talk about bringing the character over to KI on the official Halo Waypoint blog.

When asked about who possible guest characters could be back in 2013, Creative Director at Microsoft Studios Adam Isgreen’s first response was the Arbiter. However, he didn’t think they would actually get a chance to bring him over for any number of reasons. The Killer Instinct roster isn’t exactly free of unearthly critters, but mixing the two franchises at that point was understandably unexpected.

Those concerned with how the Halo and Killer Instinct universes line up to allow such a merger can take heart in the fact that the Arbiter shown here isn’t exactly the same Arbiter from the Halo series, though he is, obviously, heavily inspired by those before him. Just like what they did with Nicole-458, the Spartan from Dead Or Alive 4, this helps create a “canonical buffer” between both universes.

To keep his playstyle close to the original Halo games, the Arbiter comes with all sorts of Covenant weaponry, including the Type-51 Carbine, plasma grenades, and his trademark energy sword. Additionally, his combo trait, which has him tack on plasma grenades or carbine shots to any ender, sword strike or throw, is called “Combat Evolved” as a shout out to the original Halo.

Of course, this is just part of what they discuss. To see the post in full, head on over to the Halo Waypoint blog where you’ll learn more details about things such as the Arbiter’s stage, as well as his many alternate costumes.

Be sure to tune in to Twitch tomorrow at 4 CST for a closer look at the Arbiter.

New Seimitsu Joystick Available from Arcade Shock

At the recently concluded Japan Arcade Expo, Seimitsu unveiled a new arcade lever that features a shorter shaft designed to give players more precise inputs than their longer counterparts.

The LS-62-01 comes up 8 millimeters short when compared to their popular LS-56 lever, which itself is about the same length as other popular levers, give or take a few millimeters. It also includes a lighter spring to both compensate for the shorter shaft and allow for more delicate, precise inputs.

For those interested in purchasing this new Seimitsu product, Arcade Shock have opened pre-orders here. It’s priced at $18.95 and is expected to ship on February 29.

Get More Out of Street Fighter V’s Training Mode with the PlayStation 4’s Custom Button Assignments

One of the best features in Street Fighter V’s excellent training mode is the ability to enable shortcuts for certain functions, such as resetting character positions. However, these functions are mapped to either L3 or the touchpad button, leaving players using arcade sticks without these inputs out of luck.

Fortunately, there’s a workaround built into the PlayStation 4 itself. As Joutai demonstrates in the video below, players on controllers without these buttons can simply use the consoles remapping feature to assign a different button as L3, allowing them to take full advantage of everything the training mode has to offer.

Samurai Warriors’ Naotora Ii Kicks Her Way into Dead or Alive 5

As we previously reported, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round (and its arcade counterpart Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Arcade) are set to receive a new guest character in Samurai Warrior’s Naotora Ii.

Famitsu recently had the opportunity to showcase some gameplay during a live broadcast, and Kazuma Prime has a recording for those of us who missed it.

As we speculated, Naotora uses kicks quite heavily, reflecting her Samurai Warriors play style. Aside from some flashy combos and juggles, the speed of her kicks makes them seem quite hard to counter hold on reaction. The video also reveals the return of Dead or Alive 3’s Azuchi stage.

Finally, Team NINJA provided a handful of screenshots if the above video isn’t enough. Check them out below and let us know what you think.

Mortal Kombat X’s Kombat Kast Highlights the Xenomorph on February 25

Over the past few weeks, NetherRealm Studios has provided gameplay details on upcoming Mortal Kombat X characters Tri-Borg, Leatherface, and Bo’ Rai Cho, but things are set to get a whole lot creepier when the Alien franchise’s Xenomorph takes center stage on Thursday.

What makes Alien both interesting and divisive is the fact that, aside from being a guest character, it also seems to take the place of series staple Baraka. At least one (if not all) of its variations will feature the Tarkatan’s arm blades.

Those interested in how these pair with creatures own grisly arsenal should tune into Twitch this Thursday, February 25, at 2 PM PST, 5 PM EST.
