Capcom’s Matt Dahlgren Talks Street Fighter V Balancing, Beta Details, and More

At the recently concluded TwitchCon in San Francisco, California, Venture Beat’s Stephen “Sosage” Kleckner got a chance to talk to Capcom of America’s director of marketing and eSports Matt Dahlgren about Street Fighter V.

The interview itself covered many things, including competitive gaming, Capcom Cup, and how Street Fighter V plays into both. Dahlgren also mentioned a couple of things that fans eagerly following the upcoming title’s development are bound to be excited about.

First, Dahlgren confirmed that the game will have a character announcement at Brazil Game Show next month, following up on Yoshinori Ono’s teasing earlier this year. This is interesting, as reveals at regional trade shows have been quite specific to that area. Could this mean that one of the franchises Brazilian characters could be making a return?

As for how Street Fighter V will revolve around various community events, Dahlgren mentions a specific time frame for adjustments, tailored around the competitive season. “The beginning of spring is where we would make any kind of drastic changes, to kind of work things out for the season,” he explains. “We’ll make sure to not do any significant balance adjustments before a huge event like an Evo or a Capcom Cup.”

Dahlgren also took the time to touch on Street Fighter V’s next beta phase, saying that Capcom will be mixing the roster up so that players will get to try different characters. While not outright confirmed, this seems to hint that some characters from the first phase may not be in the second one.

Of course, that’s not all there is to the interview, so be sure to head on over to Venture Beat to learn more about Capcom’s plans for Street Fighter V.

Nemo Faces Latif in Recent Ultra Street Fighter IV Exhibition Footage

Team Black Eye’s Nemo is arguably one of the most exciting players to watch in Ultra Street Fighter IV. His mastery of Rolento allows him to take the character to new heights, even while taking on other high-level competitors.

Latif can be described in much the same way. Back in 2011, he made a name for himself by taking out multiple top players with his C. Viper on the way to Evo’s grand finals. Since then, he’s continued to be one of the most dominant C. Vipers in the community despite a drop-off in event attendance.

These two giants have yet to clash in an official tournament setting, but Latif’s recent trip to Japan allowed him to visit Black Eye headquarters for a match against Nemo. Did Rolento roll over C. Viper, or did the latter burn kick her way to victory? Check out the video below to find out!

Latif was also able to check in with the folks at YUBIKEN during his stay in Japan, so be sure to go back and watch that footage if you haven’t already.

Get Down with These Dee Jay Combos in Ultra Street Fighter IV

Dee Jay is a characters generally considered to be on the lower end of the tier list in Ultra Street Fighter IV. Despite various tweaks across numerous patches, he’s still nowhere near the characters that typically win tournaments.

But that doesn’t mean Dee Jay isn’t capable of doing impressive things in the right hands. In his latest combo video, Ricardo Roman demonstrates some practical and damaging combos from the Jamaican street fighter for use both mid-screen and in the corner. Learn How to Properly Burst Sol’s Grand Viper in Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-

While Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- features a burst system that allows players to break out of combos, there are some moves that are difficult to escape properly. One such move is Sol Badguy’s Grand Viper, which forms the basis of VR-Raiden’s latest tutorial.

In the video below, VR-Raiden shows how a player can burst Sol’s Grand Viper at just the right moment to cause most of the move to whiff, and then put Sol in an unsafe situation. The guide also takes time to explain that Sol can fight back against this by using a Roman Cancel to keep himself safe or, on the more complex side of things, by implementing a jump install for a chance to punish the burst.

Take a Closer Look at Daigo and Momochi’s Ultra Street Fighter IV Grand Finals Match at Stunfest 2015

The Ultra Street Fighter IV grand finals match at Stunfest 2015 was arguably one of the best in recent memory. In it, none other than “the Beast” himself, Mad Catz’ Daigo Umehara, came out of losers to go up against reigning Capcom Cup champion Momochi of Evil Geniuses, eventually taking the whole thing with an impressive bracket reset.

But the results only tell part of the story. After breaking down the first two games in the set, Jay Rego has returned to shine a light on the third.

Here, Rego focuses on the fireball war, touching on how they both players challenge the other and anticipate attacks. He also looks at some interesting tech that Momochi brings out during the middle of the set.

Filipino Champ on Kane Blueriver’s Evo 2015 Championship: “If he ran into me, it would have been a different story.”

The Daily Dot’s Best of 3 is back with another interview of a top American fighting game player. Last time, they talked to Team Liquid’s Du “NuckleDu” Dang, and now they’ve gotten in contact with former Evo championRyan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez of Panda Gaming.

In the interview, they go over a wide range of topics, such as Ramirez’s role as a “villain” in the community, his recent Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 performance in tournaments such as Evo 2015, and future plans.

When talking about Absolute Battle 6 coming up this weekend in particular, he mentions not being able to attend due to his associating the event with the loss of his grandmother, who passed away while he was visiting Texas for Absolute Battle 5 in 2014.

Moving on to games, they touch on Radiant Entertainment’s Rising Thunder, which is currently in open alpha testing. Ramirez recently won the game’s inaugural tournament, and believes that he’s probably the best Rising Thunder player at the moment. Apart from that, he says he likes how accessible the game is and its emphasis on good decision-making over pure execution.

But what would a Filipino Champ interview be without Marvel talk? The biggest question these days seems to be whether or not it’s still “America’s game”, considering how well foreign players have been doing, most notably Chilean Nicolas “Kane Blueriver” Gonzalez of The Black Eye, who was crowned champion at Evo 2015.

Ramirez says that Gonzalez deserves the win with how hard he has worked to get to that point, even if he missed out on playing Ramirez himself and fellow Marvel god Christopher “ChrisG” Gonzalez. That said, he still thinks Marvel belongs to the United States and that, overall, Americans are still more dominant.

Of course, this is just a small bit of what they talk about during their lengthy interview. Be sure to check out the video below for more; the discussion in question begins around 14 minutes in if you want to jump right to it.

RayRay Showcases His Felicia in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Exhibition

While CTRL’s RayRay is perhaps best known for his Magneto and Sentinel in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, it may surprises some folks to learn that he also runs a second team built around Felicia.

To help remind people of this fact, RayRay recently shared footage of an exhibition he ran–fielding a team consisting of Felicia, Doctor Doom, and Strider Hiryu–against Punisher’s M.O.D.O.K., Rocket Raccoon, and Hawkeye. While somewhat unorthodox, this Felicia team shows some good synergy, with both assists locking his opponent down as he sets up the catgirl’s offense; Hiryu’s Vajra in particular helps keep characters grounded for Delta Kick setups.

Be sure to check out the match below and let us know what you think of RayRay’s Felicia.

Wednesday Night Fights Returns to Live Competition This Fall

Level|Up Series’ Wednesday Night Fights is one of the most well known weekly tournaments for fighting games. Formerly held at Super Arcade, it attracted some of Southern California’s best players in multiple games, and was also known for bringing in out-of-state talent on a regular basis.

After parting with Super Arcade late last year, however, the series moved to online competition. While this has allowed additional players to take part in the tournaments, more than a few folks have mourned the loss of a local venue and the arcade-style feel that it brought to the area.

Well, those in mourning need not mourn much longer, as Level|Up just announced that Wednesday Night Fights will be returning to live competition this fall. In the video below, Alex Valle takes viewers on a walking tour of the eSports Arena in Santa Ana, California, which will house the upcoming competitive season when it begins in October. As you’ll see, there should be no shortage of setups or the comforts of home in this new venue.

Wednesday Night Fight’s 2015 fall season is set to run from October 21 to December 16. Stay tuned for further details on its return to live competition.
