pokkentournament-screen-3-622-crop

Since its announcement last year, we haven’t really heard much about Pokkén Tournament, the Pokémon fighting game being developed by Bandai Namco Games under the supervision of Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada. The developers plan to rectify this, however, later this month during the next installment of Famitsu’s live monthly news broadcast.

No early information has been released as to what will be shared during the program, but he game’s official website has been updated with a new logo and renders for Lucario and Machamp.

The stream will be hosted on January 23 through Niconico at 7 PM JST (2 AM Pacific, 5 AM EST for North American viewers).

Pokkén Tournament is currently scheduled for an arcade release later this year.

Get Hype! Mike Z Demonstrates Beowulf’s Unique Crowd Excitement Mechanic in Skullgirls Encore

As is the case with most every installment, Lab Zero Games had a few treats in store for Skullgirls Encore fans during last week’s Salty! broadcast. While going over the new balance experiments in the Endless Beta, lead developer Mike Zaimont also took the time to demonstrate the interesting hype mechanic employed by upcoming roster addition Beowulf.

By doing specific moves or taunting, Beowulf can build up to three levels of crowd excitement, gaining buffs along the way. For example, having at least one level of hype allows him to link certain throw finishers out of most of his supers.

For those who missed it, Makr0ss has posted a recording of this particular portion of the stream, which we’ve included below. The segment on Beowulf’s excitement mechanic can be found around thirteen minutes in.

Kitana Slices Her Way Into Mortal Kombat X Alongside Kung Lao and Goro

Last night, we reported on some speculation that Kitana would possibly be joining the cast of Mortal Kombat X, based on a few screenshots shared by series head Ed Boon. Now, we can all stop speculating, as the latest trailer for the game has finally dropped and yes, the Edenian princess will be playable.

Kitana rejoins the cast with her trademark fans, using them to cut her opponents up from both afar and up close. The trailer also marks our first look at Kung Lao outside of magazine articles.

Additionally, the trailer ends with another glimpse of Goro. The popular sub-boss will be returning to as a bonus for those who pre-order the game.

Mortal Kombat X will be hitting PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on April 14.

Updates to Microsoft’s Game Usage Rules May Affect Tournament Broadcasts

killerinstinctone-spinal-3-622-crop

Microsoft recently released new guidelines for the creation, sharing, and monetization of video content such as streams, let’s plays, and machinima featuring Microsoft Studios published games, such as Killer Instinct.

These rules lean in favor of video content creators, however the company has put in some clear protections for its intellectual property. For example, any sort of reverse engineering to access assets not normally seen in the game are prohibited.

While the rules lay out prohibitions on offensive content, the more interesting bits have to do with Microsoft’s updated guidelines on monetization.

Except as described here, you can’t sell or otherwise earn any compensation from your Item, including through advertisements in the Item. This means you  can’t charge money in exchange for your Item, post it on a site that requires subscription or other fees to view the Item, or post it on a page you use to sell other items or services(even if they have nothing to do with Game Content or Microsoft). You also can’t use Game Content in an app that you sell in an app store.

You may make your Item available on Youtube or Twitch and participate in programs on those sites that allow you to earn revenue from ads displayed in connection with your Item.

If the Item you create and distribute is a free app, then you must distribute it for free (you can’t charge for it), and you also can’t earn any money from advertising in that app.

Based on this, it seems that the only revenue that Microsoft will allow is from specific partner programs. This may prove to be problematic for some streams, including those provided by tournaments, that do derive some additional revenue from the placement of advertisements and sponsor logos.

For a bit more insight into how this could affect fighting game streams, we contacted resident community lawyer David “UltraDavid” Graham for his thoughts on the matter.

“[M]ost tournament organizers who’ve run Killer Instinct tournaments have already been going against the rules anyway by not getting authorization from Microsoft. It’s already an infringement of Microsoft’s rights to just run a public tourney in the first place,” he explained. “This change only affects organizers in that now they’re going against the rules in slightly more ways than before. The more significant worry is if Microsoft’s willingness to write and announce new rules hints that it might be more willing to enforce them.”

For now, we’ll have to wait and see if any major revisions are needed in the way tournaments broadcast their Killer Instinct competitions. If you think these updated regulations may affect you, be sure to check out Microsoft’s official guidelines.

Future Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Content May Not Come to Older Consoles Due to Hardware Limitations

doa5-lastround-raidouhayate-622-crop

Team NINJA has been quite consistent in supporting the Dead or Alive 5 series with additional characters, optional costumes, and various other extras. However, it seems that this may soon come to an end for last generation’s platforms.

The developers revealed earlier today that they may not be able to put out additional content for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Dead or Alive 5 Last Round in the future. This is because they are apparently reaching the limit on how much downloadable content they can add on to these consoles due to limits on hardware capacity.

That said, Team NINJA has stated that they are still looking into these restrictions and will inform fans of their plans moving forward as soon as possible.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round is scheduled to launch in North America and Europe on February 17 and February 20, respectively. It will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

HORI Releasing BlazBlue: Chronophantasma EXTEND Arcade Stick Alongside Japanese Launch

It seems that the Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai isn’t the only new arcade stick that HORI has in the works. In line with the game’s Japanese release this April, HORI is set to release a BlazBlue: Chronophantasma EXTEND arcade stick.

HORI_BBCP_EXTEND_FightingStick_622x320

Unlike the HRAP4 Kai, however, this new controller utilizes a smaller form factor similar to the company’s older Fighting Stick models. This, along with the lower price of ¥10,584 (~$89 USD), seems to indicate that it will not likely feature the arcade spec Hayabusa lever and Kuro buttons. That said, it still retains the cross-platform compatibility of its more expensive brethren, allowing player to use it across Sony’s PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

This arcade stick will be available on April 23, the same day BlazBlue: Chronophantasma EXTEND launches in Japan. It is currently up for pre-order through Amazon Japan.

mayflash_gcn_adaptor_622x320

One of the biggest problem facing many Super Smash Bros. for Wii U fans when trying to play the game competitively is the relative scarcity of the official GameCube controller adapter released by Nintendo. Due to high demand, finding one on sale, let alone at a decent price, has become something of a struggle. With this being the case, it was only a matter of time before third parties started making their own.

Enter Mayflash with their GameCube controller adapter for the Wii U. Available right now over at Play-Asia, Mayflash’s device supports up to four separate controllers, much like Nintendo’s, as well as vibration with no delay.

This third party GameCube adapter also has one feature that the official one doesn’t. With just the flick of a small switch on the side, the Mayflash adapter can also be used on the PC.

This device is currently available on Play-Asia for only $19.99
