Marvel vs. Capcom served as the inspiration for Wolverine’s newest power in the comic books

While the Marvel vs. Capcom games are (partly) inspired by Marvel’s comics, the series’ long life means that it has also inspired comic creators themselves. The latest of these is Charles Soule, who in giving new powers to the resurrected Wolverine, has stated that he was inspired by Capcom’s storied fighting game series.

For those who aren’t familiar with the current comic book storylines, here’s a quick summary: Wolverine, that is the original one, James “Logan” Howlett, is being resurrected after he died back in 2014. As part of this, he’s getting a new power — the ability to heat up his claws to extreme temperatures.

As part of a video message played at the San Diego Comic Convention, writer Charles Soule stated that the Marvel vs. Capcom games were the inspiration for Logan’s new powers. Now, longtime fans of the series will likely find this odd — Wolverine never had heated-claw powers in the games themselves. Is Soule trying to explain how Wolverine can leave giant X-shaped slashes in mid air (with fire, this time)? We’ll find out when the Return of Wolverine mini-series debuts in September.

Evo 2018 preview: The King of Fighters XIV at AnimeEVO is blown wide open for all competitors

While it isn’t a main game this year, The King of Fighters XIV still has a stage at Evo 2018 thanks to AnimEVO and the expanded support for side tournaments at this event. Combined with a decent-sized $5,000 prize pool bonus from SNK, this means some of the best KOFXIV players in the world are once again coming to Evo.

Now as of late, Chinese players have been a dominant force in The King of Fighters XIV. Players such as QANBA.Douyu|Xiaohai and PandaTV|Dakou have been doing well in recent tournaments; Xiaohai in particular won CEO 2018, which means he’ll be coming in on a hot streak — or would, if he were joining KOFXIV.

Yes, XiaoHai and the other Chinese players are conspicuously absent from this tournament. Whether it’s due to focusing on other games or simply not being able to make the trip, they won’t be competing at The King of Fighters XIV this year. Now, while this may seem like a bad thing, let us not forget that China isn’t the only dominant force in competitive KOFXIV. There are other strong players from other regions who have been making their marks in the scene, and the absence of the Chinese simply blows the doors wide open for them to take the win.

There are still other players from the far East competing at The King of Fighters XIV at Evo 2018. A number of Japanese players are coming over: among these is kojiKOG, who’s made it quite far in numerous tournaments in the East — including 9th at Evo Japan 2018 with his unorthodox team of Dinosaur, Mature, and Verse. In addition to this, Taiwan’s Rowy|ZJZ is also in attendance.

Of course, it’s the Mexican players that many people are expecting to shine in this tournament. Violent Kain and El Rosa from TxC are both in the tournament, and both have seen good finishes in numerous tournaments with the former almost making top 8 at Evo Japan 2018. Luis Cha is another Mexican player who did well at Evo Japan 2018, also making it into the top 16. Meanwhile, VegasKOF|Wero Asamiya is coming off a lot of momentum thanks to his second place finish at CEO 2018 — the latter result making him a favorite here. He’ll be joined by teammate Johny, who’s accomplishments include a top 8 finish at NCR 2018.

While the series isn’t as big in the USA as it is in other regions, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any good American players coming in for a shot at the prize. Two other players coming in hot from great performances at CEO 2018 are JDR from KPB, and Vicio from TxC and Orochinagi. Another player who’s done well for himself is MTG|Y05H1, who made top 8 at NCR 2018. He’s being joined by MTG teammate Sol Goodguy.

Of course, this is just a slice of the over 50 players coming to compete in the The King of Fighters XIV at AnimEVO. There’s still a chance for many other players to shine at the event. The lack of certain players (on top of SNK’s generous prize bonus) has only made the stakes higher, with better chances of winning for those who are in attendance. So who will take the win at this year’s KOFXIV tournament? We’ll find out when Evo 2018 kicks off on August 3rd.

James Goddard and Ken Lobb will be talking Killer Instinct on today’s Microsoft Studios LIVE Show

While we haven’t really heard any sort of exciting news for Killer Instinct in some time, Microsoft’s reboot of the classic fighting series has been soldiering on with a healthy competitive scene, that’s still been hosting amazing tournaments.

For fans of the series, today’s Microsoft Studios LIVE Show might have a special treat for you. The stream — which will be taking place at 12:00 noon Pacific time today — will have special guests in the form of KI Design Director James “DJames” Goddard (also the creator of Street Fighter‘s DeeJay, and Weapon Lord) and series co-creator Ken Lobb.

Now, before you get excited about the possibility of something being announced at the show, the official Killer Instinct twitter account has stated that fans should keep their expectations low. They’ve specifically said that the show is meant to be “low-key”, so you shouldn’t expect any major announcements. That said, the Microsoft Studios LIVE Show does usually talk about the future of the studio’s games — so maybe you might still get some indication of what’s in store for KI in the future.

Killer Instinct is currently available on both Xbox One and PC.

Phrasefight, a hybrid rhythm and fighting game, is coming to Nintendo Switch

Nintendo’s Switch is getting another offbeat fighting game. Mediascape is bringing Phrasefight, studio VeryOK’s rhythm and fighting game hybrid, to Nintendo’s portable console.

First released on PC and Mac back in February, Phrasefight combines both genres resulting in a game that emphasizes timing and precision. Players take turns on offense where they’re challenged to hit attack prompts that correspond to attacks on the opponent. Getting these prompts right or wrong determines if an attack connects, or misses. Victory is determined not by a health bar, bur rather on a player’s performance with these prompts.

The game will be playable in both handheld and docked modes. It’ll support HD Rumble and 2-person share play, with one Joy-Con per player. No release date has been set as of yet, though the game will be playable at Zentame 2018 at Gifu in early August.

In the meantime, here are a couple of videos from VeryOK showing the game in action.

Bandai Namco’s Mark Religioso talks how SoulCalibur VI is retelling the stories of SoulCalibur I and II

As most fans already know, SoulCalibur VI will be set in an earlier era in the series’ history. The game specifically goes back in time to the period of the first two SoulCalibur games. Recently, as part of their SDCC livestream, IGN Live got a chance to talk to SoulCalibur brand manager Mark Religioso about the move back to this specific point in time. Specifically, he discusses how they’re approaching this retelling.

For SoulCalibur VI, the story is told through Kilik’s point of view. This is a reflection of the tag line “history hides away more than one truth,” with the game showing “the truth” so to speak, as Kilik sees it. That said, despite the story being from Kilik’s point of view, newcomer Grøh will also be something of a protagonist in the game’s story mode as well — though they didn’t divulge any further details on him.

In addition to this, they also talk about Voldo, who was confirmed at SDCC. Specifically, they talk a bit about how he’s become iconic to the franchise, and also go a bit into how he’s changed in this game. You can check out all this at the 1 hour, 5 minute mark in the video below.

SoulCalibur VI launches on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on October 19, 2018.

For fans looking for a platform fighting game on PlayStation 4, here’s some great news: Angry Mob Games have announced that Brawlout will be coming to Sony’s console next month.

Originally launching on as an Early Access title on Steam last April followed by Switch last December, Brawlout will finally be coming to PlayStation 4 on August 21 both as a digital download and as a physical disc. When it does hit PlayStation 4, it will bring with it new guest characters, Yooka and Laylee from Playtonic Games’s 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee.

Yooka and Laylee will be joining Brawlout on all platforms as its third guest character from another indie game (with the other two are Hyper Light Drifter‘s Hyper Light Drigter, and Guacamelee!’s Juan). Both will actually act as as a single character, with players controlling both at the same time. The duo can hit opponents with moves like the “Lizard Leap” that takes their opponents into the air, then follow up with a “Buddy Slam” that send their foes cashing into the ground, setting up  a “Sonar ‘Splosion” to send them flying off screen. In addition to this, Yooka can also slurp incoming projectiles to use as his own.

Brawlout launches on PlayStation 4 on August 21 with pre-orders open now, it’s already available on Switch and as an Early Access title on Steam. All versions will be getting Yooka and Laylee on August 21.
