There’s a way to perform one-button instant air dashes in Dragon Ball FighterZ

One of the more important techniques in air dash-based anime fighters is the “instant air dash.” This technique allows players to quickly approach from the air, and set up overhead attacks and mix-ups. Now usually this can take a bit of practice to perform, however a method has been found in Dragon Ball FighterZ that allows players an easier way to do it in that game.

The video below from Austin Murphy demonstrates how this technique is performed. Instead of using the usual double tap into upforward input, the method uses the fact that quickly tapping the command for a Super Dash (R2 or Right Trigger in the default control mapping) results in a normal dash that’s slightly off the ground. By simply tapping forward and Super Dash (making sure not to trigger it), players effectively get a one-button instant air dash in Dragon Ball FighterZ.

As the video demonstrates, this technique was tested in the open beta. Whether or not it remains in the retail game, well, we’ll find out when Dragon Ball FighterZ finally hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 26 in the West, and February 1 in Japan.

See what Sakura can do in this Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition combo video roundup

With Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition now upon us, most players are looking to see what Sakura –the first of this season’s returning DLC characters — can do. For those thinking of picking up Sakura, a number of creators have started doing combo videos and tutorials for her, naturally.

First up, TrueUnderDawgGaming has put up this combo guide for her:

rooflemonger has also put out a couple of video guides for Sakura. The first video is again a combo guide for the former schoolgirl:

However, combos are only part of what a player needs to know. rooflemonger’s second video focuses on Sakura’s okizeme game, and how she can create pressure and do damage once she’s knocked down an opponent.

For a more straight-up combo video, check out this video from Sonic Flash Kick.

Finally, for those looking for something even flashier, desk has also taken Sakura out for a spin — resulting in the combo video below.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is getting a mobile spin-off game, releasing worldwide this winter

As is the trend these days, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT joins the ranks of fighting games that are getting a mobile spin-off. Square Enix has announced that Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia is coming to iOS and Android devices worldwide this winter.

As is the case with most mobile spin-offs of fighting games, Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia ditches the arcade/console originals fighting mechanics. In this case, Opera Omnia goes back to the franchise’s roots with a turn-based battle system, though one that still revolves around Dissidia Final Fantasy NT‘s “Bravery’ mechanic.

For those interested in trying out Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia, pre-registration is already open on Google Play. Additionally, those who pre-register — or follow the game’s Facebook or Twitter accounts — will get 5,000 gems (the game’s in-game currency) at launch.

Meanwhile, the original Dissidia Final Fantasy NT for PlayStation 4 just launched in Japan, and will hit the West on January 30. An open beta is currently available.

Sakura will be tournament legal in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition at Evo Japan

With the release of any new character, there always comes the question of whether or not that character will be allowed for use at any tournaments being run close to their release. Such is the case with Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition‘s Sakura, who comes out just over a week before the inaugural Evo Japan.

For those wondering if they’ll be able to play Sakura at Evo japan, wonder no more. In a recent tweet, Evo head Joey “Mr Wizard” Cuellar has confirmed that Sakura will indeed be playable at the event.

While Sakura may be new to Street Fighter V, the game’s Arcade Edition update has brought with it a number of changes for the rest of the cast as well. As such, the game’s current balance is still up in the air as people now have to learn the new match-up not just against Sakura, but for the rest of the cast.

Evo Japan takes place next week from January 26 to 28 in Tokyo.

desk and Final Showdown show off some swag in this Dragon Ball FighterZ mini combo video roundup

The focus of the Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta was the game’s online matchmaking, and getting people to try the game out by fighting other people. That said, that hasn’t stopped some folks from testing out the game and looking for combos.

Two of the creators who’ve put out some combo videos for the beta are none other than desk and Final Showdown. Both of these players have found ways — using the game’s limited tutorial mode — to test out some combos, despite the lack of a proper training mode.

While this is his first time actually playing the game, Final Showdown has had an interesting history with it. Prior to the beta, he’s been breaking down footage of older builds in the forums, providing insight and making predictions that have all turned out to be true. This includes a near-infinite for Goku while in Sparking Blast mode, that’s one of the things showcased in the video below.

Another thing that he’s noted is that it’s generally better to use the first two hits of an air autocombo (what would be light to medium in a normal chain) as these have better momentum and tracking than doing a normal chain. This is something to think about when looking at this second batch of combos for Goku.

Of course, the tutorial mode does allow players to use more characters later on, such as teen Gohan who’s featured (alongside Goku) in the video below.

desk’s first combo video for the Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta, on the other hand, focuses on one of the game’s unique mechanics: the Dragon Balls. The highlights of the video below is a combo extension after Shenron is summoned.

His second video is less ambitious, highlighting mostly ways to continue combos after a super.

And as a bonus, here’s some Perfect Cell tech from Georg Shkodo:

Dragon Ball FighterZ hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in the West on January 26, followed by Japan on February 1.

Retro-bit shows off officially licensed wired and wireless Sega Genesis and Saturn pads at CES

Nowadays, most pad players tend to stick with the default gamepad that comes with a console — usually the Dual Shock 4. Move the clock back a decade or two, however, and the story is quite different. Back then, the gold standard for fighting game pads was considered to be Sega’s compact 6-button control pad for the Japanese Saturn (later released as the Model 2 in the US).

Now, it seems that this classic controller, alongside its Genesis predecessor, is coming back thanks to Retro-bit. At the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, Retro-bit showed off their new line of officially licensed Sega controllers.

The company is making new Sega Saturn, Sega Genesis 6-button, and (for those so inclined) Sega Dreamcast controllers. The controllers will be available in both wireless Bluetooth and wired configurations. The wired versions are compatible with PC and Macintosh, meanwhile the Bluetooth wireless versions will also work with Android and iOS devices. Additionally, the latter will also come with special dongles to make them work with the original console.

Price and release date for these have yet to be announced. For more on these — and other fighting game controller-related stories — stay locked on to Shoryuken.

Yatagarasu: Attack On Cataclysm’s official Evo Japan side tournament details released

With Japan being the birthplace of the fighting game genre as we know it, it’s not surprising that there are a number of side tournaments at Evo Japan beyond its official roster. One of the side tournaments at the event is for Yatagarasu: Attack On Cataclysm.

For those interested in competing at Yatagarasu: Attack On Cataclysm at Evo Japan, the details for the tournament, including how to register have been released.

The side tournament will take place on January 27, day two of Evo Japan, and will use the arcade version of the game. This means any PC players used to playing on pad will have to adapt to using an arcade stick. The rules themselves should be familiar to anyone who’s been to other side tournaments — double elimination, 99 second rounds, no game stopping glitches allowed.

Those interested in joining Yatagarasu: Attack On Cataclysm‘s Evo Japan side tournament can do so over at the AnimEVO Japan site. Those who join will receive a special Yatagarasu badge featuring Hina and Shimo.

Bandai Namco may extend the Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta in response to network issues

This weekend’s Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing for everyone involved. People trying the game out have reported issues with finding matches, or even just getting into the beta — oftentimes receiving the dreaded “failed to initialize network” message at the log on screen.

dbfz open beta experience

Bandai Namco has released a statement acknowledging these issues. In it, they state that the fixes to the server will take some time and that — while they will keep the beta open — people will run into these issues while they’re working on them.

More importantly, they’ve stated that if they cannot address the issues in a decent amount of time, they will look into extending the open beta. While the main server issues seem to have been fixed now, players are still facing long wait times when trying to find an opponent. The last bit of news is most welcome, giving those of us who’ve had more than our fair share of issues getting into the beta time to actually play it. In addition to this, it’ll hopefully give Bandai Namco and Arc System Works time to iron out the issues with the online play before launch.

[Note that at time of publication, there has been no confirmation from Bandai Namco that the beta period will be extended… yet. – Editor]
