Capcom Cup shows growth in Twitch viewership for 2017

Capcom has just released the Twitch viewership numbers for this year’s Capcom Pro Tour finale at Capcom Cup 2017.  The numbers released show growth in all areas such as total minutes watch, max concurrent viewers, and especially total unique viewers.

This year’s Capcom Cup had more viewers than last year. Specifically, 2017’s viewership grew by 45%, reaching 2.1 million unique viewers, over 1.4 million last year.

All these people spent more time watching the event as well, with a total 83 million minutes watched, compared to 66 million from last year. Concurrent viewers also saw growth, with the peak reaching 147 thousand viewers at the same time, compared to 142 thousand last year.

The numbers above seem to bode good things for Street Fighter V in terms of its ability to pull viewers — even more so with the launch of the Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition update later this January.

Echo Fox’s Momochi shares his thoughts on Japan’s new pro-licenses for professional gamers

As some of you may be aware, Japan’s esports industry will now start issuing “pro-licenses” for certain professional gamers. The move is meant to help get around some of the country’s gambling laws that prevent tournaments from using entrance fees to generate prize money. Now, in a new post on his blog, Echo Fox’s Yusuke Momochi has shared his thoughts on these new “pro-licenses.”

Momochi states that while he isn’t against the system, there are a few points that he’s concerned about. The biggest is “why does a newly-formed specialized group have the right to “define what a pro-gamer is?” He then points to all the work that he and other players have put into the scene, and raises concerns that the move may favor certain businesses.

That said — he isn’t totally against the idea of businesses making money. Indeed, it’s his opinion that things that don’t become businesses are things “that will probably disappear someday.”  However, he still believes that there should be thought put into the questions of who exactly the license system is for, and if there isn’t anyone sneakily trying to gain something from this.

The rest of the post goes over his thoughts on what  “pro-gamer” is, and the responsibilities that this entails. This also includes some of his thoughts on the purpose of founding his company Shinobism, where he both handles events, and trains new players.

Now while the original post on the Shinobism site is in Japanese, Andrew “Jiyuna” Fidelis has translated it and shared it on his own blog. Interested folks can read either that, or the original Japanese post.

Meet Index and Railgun in the latest Toaru Majutsu no VIRTUAL-ON trailers

To help familiarize fans with the world of their crossover mech arena fighter Toaru Majutsu no VIRTUAL-ON, Sega has started releasing a series of character and Virtuaroid trailers.

The latest of these focus on two of the more important characters in the series: the British nun Index and the electromagnetically charged student Mikoto “Railgun” Misaka. Both should be familiar to anyone with passing knowledge of the Toaru Majutsu no Index franchise — Index lends her name to that of the franchise, while Mikoto became the lead of her own spin-off series Toaru Kagaku no Railgun.

The trailer below focus on their involvement in this crossover, showcasing some of each characters’s story as well as the Virtuaroids that they pilot. Index takes control of the IDX-10/3000 BAL-RlooN is a new design unique to Toaru Majutsu no VIRTUAL-ON that seems to attack with “cute” items. Mikoto on the other hand pilots the HBV-502-H8/VSL Raiden 502 “Judge Igniters,” a new version of the classic Raiden line of Virtuaroids from previous games.

Check out both trailers below.

Face destruction in this Dragon Ball FighterZ Beerus breakdown by Perfect Legend

Bandai Namco has released yet another special character breakdown for Dragon Ball FighterZ. This time, the focus is put on Universe 7’s God of Destruction himself: Beerus.

Beerus possesses the power to destroy anyone for even the slightest of faults (such as not feeding him his favorite foods), and this is manifested in his moveset that involves a lot of long-range moves that get to his opponent before they get to him. This includes being one of the few characters that can combo from a neutral ki blast on hit.

The most important set of moves Beerus has, however, are the orbs of destruction that he can summon and use in various ways. They can be called into play in multiple ways, though he still needs to be careful — as his opponents can Super Dash through them.

Dragon Ball FighterZ launches onto PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 26.

Bet on blue with this Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku trailer for Dragon Ball FighterZ

With the recent announcement of Dragon Ball Super characters Beerus, Goku Black, and Hit joining the cast of Dragon Ball FighterZ, it’s easy to forget that these aren’t the first two characters from the series to join the game. The Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan version of Goku and Vegeta are also coming to the game as early unlockable characters for those who pre-order it.

Now, most likely to help remind people that these two exist (and help drive pre-orders), Bandai Namco are releasing individual trailers for these two: starting with Goku.

Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (or Super Saiyan Blue, for short) is a concept that was explored more in Dragon Ball Super — as such, the moves Goku does here reflect the many new things he’s learned in the series. This includes the ability to power himself up more by combining the form with the Kaio-ken technique, which is demonstrated as part of one of his super moves in the trailer below.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 26 in the West, and February 1 in Japan. For those looking to get a taste of the game, an open beta is coming this January.

SoulCalibur VI producer Motohiro Okubo on the possibility of a Nintendo Switch port

While most people were excited at the announcement of SoulCalibur VI, a number of players were disappointed at one particular aspect of the announcement: the lack of a Nintendo Switch release. The series has always had a special place in the hearts of Nintendo fans, due to SoulCalibur II being released on the GameCube with the Legend of Zelda‘s Link as a guest character. Now, in a recent interview with Metro’s Gamecentral, producer Motohiro Okubo was asked about the possibility of a port for Nintendo’s portable/console hybrid.

According to Okubo, since SoulCalibur VI started development before they knew anything about the Switch, a version for it was not considered. “SoulCalibur VI development started more than three years ago. And nobody knew anything about Switch back then. So, as a matter of fact we are not working on Switch, as of now,” he states. However, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a port, “I’m interested in the platform. So if the Unreal Engine can adapt to Switch, and evolve itself, then maybe the possibility will be more.”

The last bit is the most interesting. While Unreal Engine 4 (the same engine that SoulCalibur VI is using) initially did not support the Switch, it received an update this past May (version 4.16) that gave it full-featured native support for the system. Of course, the engine supporting the Switch is different from actually getting the game to run well on it, and porting SoulCalibur VI‘s code as-is may not result in game that runs well on the admittedly less-powerful system. That said: maybe with some further tweaks and updates, we’ll eventually be able to see SoulCalibur VI on Switch.

SoulCalibur VI is set to release sometime in 2018 on PlayStation 4, XBox One, and PC.

Check out every known character’s assist in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Being a tag team-based game with an assist system, a characters’ assist is going to be an important part of team-building in Dragon Ball FighterZ. It’s arguably even more important here, since each character currently only has one assist available to them.

For those players wondering about what the assists of the character they’re looking into picking up are, AlzarathEX has put together a Google Doc compiling all of the assists of the currently-revealed cast.

The Google Document not only lists every known assists, but also shows animations taken from various streams and videos (some of which we’ve shared below). This is on top of detailing certain important properties of each assist. For example, both versions of Gohan have an invincible uppercut assist that is bound to be useful to support zoning characters.

Meanwhile, Gotenks fires a projectile that tracks the opponent anywhere on screen, while paralyzing them for a decent amount of time on hit.
