Saudi woman wins SNK’s design contest for character to appear in an upcoming KoF game

For some of the more creatively inclined members of the community, getting their original designs into a fighting game would be a dream come true. Recently, SNK and Manga Productions gave a chance to have someone’s dream come true via a design contest for a character to appear in an upcoming game.

The winner of the contest was BMashael, a Saudi woman with her original design named Najd.  Najd’s design features her wearing an abaya (a type of cloak) that belongs to a djinn named Halek. The djinn will then assist Najd for some of her attacks.

As for what game exactly Najd will be appearing in, nothing specific has been stated as of yet. All that’s stated is that it’s for an upcoming King of Fighters game. Whether or not this is a new installment of the franchise, or simply a spin-off is as of yet unknown.

In the meantime, here’s SNK’s Yasuyuki Oda on the winner of the contest, as well as some BMashael’s artwork for Najd.

PCMarvelGod and Holy Order-Troll given lifetime bans due to the double-entry incident at Canada Cup 2017

Canada Cup Gaming has finally given its official word on the incident that marred the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite at Canada Cup 2017: Jose “PCMarvelGod” Aldape — also known as Quackbot — ended up entering the tournament twice, using the bracket slot of Lina “Holy Order-Troll” Crawford, who was unable to play due to issues with a custom arcade stick.

This double-entry, once discovered, resulted in Pool 8 of the tournament being replayed — something which cost Southern California player Eliver “KillerKai” Ling his previous placement int he top 16, and his chances at winning the tournament.

In response to this, Canada Cup Gaming has released a statement, indicating that lifetime bans have been issued to both PCMarvelGod and Holy Order-Troll; neither will be allowed to enter a Canada Cup event again. In addition to violating the rules of the tournament, the actions of both players have also undermined the legitimacy of the event, causing at least one player (KillerKai) to publicly state the at they would never again compete at the event.

New French trailer for Dragon Ball FighterZ may hint at another new character

Recently, we got another look at Dragon Ball FighterZ via a livestream from Bandai Namco. In addition to this however, a new trailer — different from the one shown on the stream — was also released in French, one that may hint at another character coming to the game.

As Shoryuken forum member Doctrine Dark has noted, Goku can be seen shooting a Kamehameha at an unknown opponent at around 1:41 in the trailer below.

Freeze-framing and looking closer at said action sequence shows that the opponent that Goku is shooting at is a female character wearing a tube top and some baggy pants — a description that doesn’t match any of the known characters in the game.

As is the way of such things, much speculation is already being made on this character’s identity. Some have pointed out that it may be the female Saiyan prodigy Caulifla from Dragon Ball Super, since she does wear a similar tube top and baggy pants combo, and shoots red ki blasts. Others have noted her attack’s similarity to that done by Kid Buu, prompting them to posit that it is what happens when Buu absorbs Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s villain, Android 21.

Whoever this new character is, we’ll likely learn about their identity soon — what with only a couple of months left before the game’s January 26 release date.

Fight straight out of your sketchpad with these comic-style shaders for Street Fighter V and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

The transition of fighting games to modern 3D engines on PC has opened the door to all kinds of mods for these games; some of the most interesting are those that change how the game looks through the manipulation of an engine’s lighting and shaders.

This next set of mods from nded may be some of the most striking yet. Using the popular graphics modding program ReShade, nded has made both Street Fighter V and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite look as if they were drawn with pencil and ink on someone’s notebook.

The graphical mod, which you can see in the videos below, is far from perfect – certain effects such as hitsparks, interfaces — and in Street Fighter V‘s case, projectile moves — aren’t visible with the mod. That said, the fact that both games run on an engine (Unreal Engine 4) that other fighting games use opens the door to those fighting games getting similar mods in the future.

For more info on how to get get these shaders, check out the instructions on the description of the MvC:I video.

Dragon Ball FighterZ’s Dragon Ball mechanic may be part of a separate mode

Ever since it was first revealed some time back, Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s Dragon Ball mechanic has been source of both speculation and worry for the community. Alongside speculating about how they will work, more than a few players have expressed concern that the mechanic may detract from the game’s competitive nature.

It seems that we may have some news that may alleviate some of those worries: well-known Dragon Ball YouTuber Rhymestyle has mentioned, in response to some of these worries, that the Dragon Ball mechanic is locked under a separate mode.

Now while this isn’t direct confirmation from Bandai Namco, Rhymestyle is known as one of the community figures in touch with them. He’s been one of the people who’ve helped Bandai Namco do character breakdowns (alongside Chris “Hellpockets” Fields). Most recently, he helped clarify a mistake about Bulma being a playable character, due to a typographical error.

That said, Rhymestyle has also stated that he’s deferring to Bandai Namco for further confirmation of this. In the meantime, those curious about how the Dragon Balls work in the game should check out our previous coverage.

Unleash devils and demons with this Monster Hunter & Dante combo video for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Of the three currently-playable DLC characters for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, it seems that Monster Hunter is the one that has gained the most attention, due to the number of viable teams that people are developing around her. One of these teams has her partnered with Dante — a combination that has been noted to reward players with damage just for hitting buttons.

This new combo video from RoK the Reaper explores the potential of this Monster Hunter/Dante team. As part of showcasing the combos that these two can do, a number of them also demonstrate combos using the Time Stone, using both the stone’s Infinity Surge and Infinity Storm to extend the combos. In addition to this, some of the combos also utilize one or both of these characters’ install Hypers, showing what they can do together with these powered-up states.

Explore what Strider Hiryu can do in Final Showdown’s latest Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite combo video

Series stalwart Strider Hiryu returns to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite with a number of changes to how some of his moves are used. The return to classic combo rules may make him feel similar to his incarnations in MvC1 and MvC2, but that his changes also open up some new opportunities.

In his latest combo video, FINAL SHOWDOWN explores some combos and concepts for Strider Hiryu in the new game. Take note that some of these aren’t full combos, rather they’re bits and pieces that can likely be further refined and combined with other things to create interesting combos and setups, in the right hands.

Rush your foes down with this hard-to-block reset for Morrigan and Dante in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Despite having a mostly unchanged moveset, Morrigan is one of those characters who plays very differently coming into Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Unlike how she was in the previous game, Morrigan in MvC:I focuses much more on rushing her opponent down, and using her partner to set up mix-ups and situations that most players will have difficulty defending against.

One of the players who’s been championing this new playstyle is Cosmic Gorgon’s Juan Miguel Champo, who’s been putting out impressive performances with this team of Dante and Morrigan (with the Time Stone), including a 5th place finish at South East Asia Major 2017. In addition to doing well in tournaments, Champo has been sharing tips and tricks for the team on social media, the latest of which is this new reset concept involving the use of Dante’s Million Carats.

The reset, which you can see below, uses the freeze from Million Carats to allow Dante to set up a sequence ending in his overhead “Hammer” special, while at the same time tagging in Morrigan to set up a low. With the speed of her low, it’s quite difficult for the defending player to block both attacks, even with the game’s pushblock auto guard.
