First Gameplay Details Emerge for Killer Instinct’s Ghostly Hisako

During a joint panel at PAX East 2015, Microsoft Studios and Iron Galaxy Studios discussed a variety of upcoming content for Killer Instinct, including an updated story, a new gameplay mode, and the first official details for season two’s next character.

In June, Killer Instinct’s story mode will be upgraded to include fighters introduced in season two. Few details were revealed as to where the narrative will go with this additional crop of cast members, but a teaser was provided that hints at an exhibition match between TJ Combo (whose last name is Garrett, apparently!) and Fulgore.

Season two will also receive an entirely fresh gameplay mode called Shadows this April, which will allow players to upload a version of themselves to the online servers for other competitors to face off against. This form of “asynchronous combat” should give folks a chance to take on tournament-level opponents without actually needing an actual human to spar with.

And finally, the big news: season two’s next character, the oft-teased ghost girl, now has a name and launch window! Hisako, who will be available near the end of this month, comes equipped with her own unique Wrath meter, and using this resource apparently grants her a reliable way to counter-hit opponents and thus deal out some serious damage.

Her gameplay is further boosted by high and low counters as well as a pretty nasty command grab, which you can see in a quick bit of footage from Iron Galaxy’s Alex Jebailey below.

Capcom Confirms Spring 2016 Release for Street Fighter V

SFV-05-622-crop

Like many companies, Capcom will be attending PAX East this weekend to show off current and upcoming titles in their video game stable. And where there’s a convention, there’s a ton of merchandise for sale, but when’s the last time a t-shirt reveal was used to announce a release date?

In a roundup of the swag they will be offering to attendees over the next few days, Capcom-Unity may have inadvertently mentioned that Street Fighter V will arrive in spring 2016, confirming details we reported shortly after the game debuted.

Launching earlier in the year will likely give many key tournaments, including Evolution and Community Effort Orlando, the opportunity to include Street Fighter V in their competitive lineups. Whether they will utilize PlayStation 4 or PC remains to be seen, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Street Fighter V is currently in development by Capcom and Dimps. A beta is planned before its official launch, and will be accessible by those who pre-order.

SoCal Regionals 2015 will be running BlazBlue: Chronophantasma EXTEND in place of its predecessor when the event arrives later this year, according to one of the lead tournament organizers.

Although the official game lineup was announced just a couple of days ago, this update significantly changes the version of BlazBlue players will be competing in. The tournament will presumably run the Japanese release, scheduled for April 23, as EXTEND won’t reach North America until summer.

SoCal Regionals 2015 is scheduled for May 1-3 in Orange, California.

NetherRealm Studios Collecting Story Questions for Next Mortal Kombat X Broadcast

mkx-mileena-storytrailer-622-crop

While fighting game players are typically interested in mechanics and mechanics alone when it comes to the release of a brand new title, the world NetherRealm Studios has crafted for the Mortal Kombat franchise since it launched in 1992 has created speculation on story details as prevalent as competitive discussion.

In order to address narrative topics fans may want explored, the developers are currently gathering questions in preparation for their next Mortal Kombat X broadcast. Though DC Comics’ graphic novel adaptation has done a pretty good job so far in filling the gaps between the upcoming title and its predecessor, there are still some avenues worth exploring.

Curious just who the hell Erron Black is, what happened to Jacqueline Briggs’ mother, or where Tremor has been all these years? Feel free to contact the team using #KombatKast on Twitter, and you may receive an answer next time they stream.

Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on April 14.

Pepeday and Nouen Take Center Stage with Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Unconvential Grapplers

By now, you would probably be hard-pressed to find a Street Fighter fan who doesn’t know Pepeday. As the face of Fukuoka Gamers Club, he has been catapulted into the spotlight over the past few months thanks to his impeccable El Fuerte play.

Of course, due to the global popularity of Ultra Street Fighter IV, there are killers waiting in every nook and cranny the world has to offer, and it’s become a regular occurrence for the fighting game community at large to be introduced to players who seemingly come out of nowhere like Pepeday.

One such player, Nouen, has for quite some time been a powerhouse of Japan’s online scene. A dedicated Hakan player, they have quickly risen through the ranks and currently occupy the top position in the Turkish grappler’s personal leaderboards.

To see how these unusual characters stack up in the hands of (arguably) their best practitioners, tournament organizer Sentosu recently brought Pepeday and Nouen together to compete in a first-to-five online match. While we don’t want to spoil the results for folks watching at home, the resulting set provides a rather intense back-and-forth battle between these two powerhouses that’s not to be missed.

Check out the replay below and see who comes out on top!

Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm Beta Almost Identical to Arcade Release

As part of their on-going dialogue with the community, the folks behind Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm posted a brand new installment of their developer diary. In addition to keeping fans apprised of recent happenings, the entry also provides some interesting information regarding the different versions of the game that are out in the wild.

The indie fighter landed in Japanese arcades by way of Taito’s NESiCAxLive network last month, but players without access to these game centers have had to make due with the limited PC beta. According to Yatagarasu programmer Shiza, however, there’s very few differences between these two iterations, meaning that competitors making due with the early Steam release won’t have much (if anything) to change when the final release arrives.

Shiza also took the time to visit two arcades currently running Attack on Cataclysm, so be sure to visit the official post for some details on how well its performing in Japan.

Combo Video Community Bands Together in Tribute to Monty Oum

Combo videos serve a variety of purposes in the fighting game community. While generally seen as a source of entertaiment, they can also open our minds to techniques once thought impossible, highlight matchup-specific craziness, or even dwell on the simplest of maneuvers.

To say combo videos are special would be an understatement, but a brand new endeavor curated by frequent content creator Mikadok serves an entirely different (and more heartfelt) purpose.

Last month, we were devastated to hear of the passing of Monty Oum, a former Midway and Bandai Namco Games developer who had since shifted his talents to machinima and animated endeavors. Before that, though, he was just like us: a member of the community who loved fighting games.

In lieu of flowers, his loved ones only asked that folks do something creative.

To honor this wish, Mikadok gathered together a group of combo video makers that included folks like Smash and Grab, JusticeSoulTuna, j8slim, HexElf, and Rotbah, among others. What resulted is an exhibition just under 43 minutes in length, packed to the brim with ridiculous footage from BlazBlue: Chronophantasma, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Street Fighter x Tekken, King of Fighters XIII, Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX, Chaos Legion, Tales of Vesperia, and more.

Give it a spin below and let us know what you think.
