Capcom Shares Mysterious Street Fighter V Screenshot from Production Notes Book

By now, it should be no surprise that Street Fighter V fans in Japan are getting some cool goodies if they pre-order the game from Capcom’s online store, but one in particular was recently teased as including a little something extra.

The exclusive production notes book that comes bundled with both the Valuable and Volcanic editions of the game features a joint interview with director Takayuki Nakayama and producer Koichi Sugiyama. While cool on its own, a recent Capcom tweet drew attention to a peculiar screenshot embedded alongside this conversation.

Whoops, that’s a little too small. Let’s blow it up a bit.

Better! Now, from what we can make out, the screenshot depicts a bearded Ryu facing off against a fighter who appears to be M. Bison. Unlike previous incarnations, however, the dictator is without the red outfit that has formed the basis of his design since Street Fighter II.

You should also be able to make out a HUD that’s drastically different than the one we know from Street Fighter V, and some of the regulars over at r/StreetFighter have pointed out that the stage looks similar to the one seen in F.A.N.G’s official artwork.

Due to the nature of the source material, it’s likely this particular screenshot was taken during development, and provided to show the changes made to Street Fighter V before it reached the state we’re familiar with. Still, others think we may have received our first look at another alternate costume for M. Bison or even the ability to customize the upcoming title’s HUD.

In any case, we can’t wait to see more. Feel free to provide your two cents in the comments below.

Desk Links Elena Combos with FADC Backdash in Ultra Street Fighter IV

There’s no denying Elena is a slippery character, and her bag of tricks continues to grow even in Ultra Street Fighter IV’s twilight. In his latest video, Desk showcases how the Kenyan princess can utilize her impressive backdash to link combos.

As most of you likely know already, Elena has one of the quickest backdashes in the game, recovering in only four frames. This means that, when timed correctly, this movement option (combined with an FADC and a slight step forward) is capable of linking combos.

While not inherently overpowered, it’s definitely something Elena players will want to keep in their back pockets should they be in need of a bit more damage or just another layer of style to finish out a match. Let us know what you think of these combos in the comments.

Spider-Man Bites Chun-Li’s Style in Marvel Contest of Champions

We were recently clued into an interesting easter egg in the mobile fighting game Marvel Contest of Champions that sees Spider-Man steal some tech from Street Fighter’s Chun-Li.

Near the end of the video below, you’ll see Miles Morales pull off his own version of Chun’s Critical Art from Street Fighter V. In fact, the entire stage appears to be reskinned version of Street Fighter IV’s Inland Jungle.

For those of you who can’t quite see it, Lythero has provided a side-by-side comparison that shows just how similar they are.

While probably just a fun, one-off thing, it shows that the two companies still maintain some sort of relationship. When’s Marvel vs. Capcom 4?

Killer Instinct Season 3 Playable at Killer Instinct World Cup, PAX South

Microsost and Iron Galaxy Studios have already provided a quick peek at Killer Instinct’s season 3 content via a beta test of guest Battletoads protagonist Rash, but it appears they are prepared to step up their efforts at two upcoming events.

According to lead combat designer Adam “Keits” Heart, preview builds of the upcoming content will be playable at the Killer Instinct World Cup and PAX South, both of which are scheduled for the weekend of January 29 in San Antonio, Texas. But don’t worry if you can’t make it in person, because there are plans to stream a few “treats” for folks stuck at home.

Apart from Rash, we know that both Kim Wu and Tusk will also be part of the playable cast in season 3, but Heart hasn’t commented on what exactly attendees will find in the demo. Stay tuned for more details.

And going back to the Killer Instinct World Cup for a bit, it was recently announced that Shadow Jago will be legal, but they will be holding off on allowing combo assist until it leaves beta. Registration is now open, and event badges will grant you immediate access to the last chance qualifier with no additional cost. Additional details will drop on January 11.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that any of this will be possible in the final release, but it’s good to have in the back of your mind for when the game launches next month.

Big Band Brings Guile’s Theme to Skullgirls

Back when Big Band first joined the Skullgirls cast, we were inundated with videos showcasing his ability to recreate pretty much any piece of music out there. Bugler’s Holiday? Of course. U.N. Owen Was Her? Oh yes.

But it was recently brought to our attention by the fine folks at r/StreetFighter that we missed one. SKT KST, the creator of the videos linked above, also put out another dedicated to one of the most iconic fighting game themes of all time: Guile’s theme! We’ve shared it below to rectify our mistake; check it out and let us know what you think!

Sega Shares Ten Hours of Chaotic APM D-1 FIGHTING FESTIVAL Competition

Just before the year’s end, Sega, Arc System Works, and Koei Tecmo hosted APM D-1 FIGHTING FESTIVAL, a massive tournament highlighting their various properties and the players who excel at playing them.

Competition was held in Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-, Dengeki Bunko FIGHTING CLIMAX IGNITION, Koihime Enbu, Blade Arcus from Shining, and Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Last Round, but as Japan is often wont to do, the format was rather…intense. Attendees were given only one game to defeat their opponent, and there wasn’t a losers bracket to use as backup if you lost. Yikes.

Sega recently provided a huge archive of the event’s broadcast, giving folks just under ten hours of footage to enjoy if they missed out on the live stream. Due to its extreme length, we’ve included four separate instances of the video below that jump to an appropriate timestamp to save you some searching.

Some of the players you can expect to see compete include Purepure, Mocchi, Nage, FAB, XYLiSH, Meru, OZ, gamera, and Jawa Curry Akira, among others. Various results can be found in our coverage hub.

Desk Breaks Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Save States

Desk returned today with a brand new Ultra Street Fighter IV video. But this time around, instead of showing off some incredible combos, he’s managed to discover a weird glitch concerning training mode’s save states.

As shown in his demonstration, Desk uses Akuma’s teleport to dodge Sagat’s ultra, leaving him behind the emperor of Muay Thai afterwards. After saving the state of the game during the cinematic, Akuma continues to appear behind Sagat until Desk performs the hitbox bug to zip in front. After that, well…just watch the video below.

While not super game breaking or related to competition in any way, it’s yet another oddity we can add to Street Fighter IV’s history. Let us know what you think in the comments.
