Rising Up: Ed bread and butter combo guide — Punishes, confirm combos, juggles, & more

Ed–the replacement body for M.Bison created by S.I.N. and abducted by Balrog–has made his playable debut in Street Fighter V. His special move inputs and basic gameplay style are unlike anything yet seen in the series. Nevertheless, I’ve done my best to compile the optimal combos for every common scenario, so you can stop worrying about damage optimization and focus on strategy. This video features anti-airs, punishes, confirms, counter-hit combos, crush counter combos, juggles, and more. This version of Ed is the one included in the ongoing beta, so all of these combos should work for you there–but Ed may yet see changes prior to his official release, and if so, I’ll update this video.

This is not the full Ed tutorial I’m working on, but rather simply a guide to his basic optimal combo routes. The combos are all my own labwork, alongside a few things I’ve observed from other players. I’m fairly confident that most of these combos are ideal, but I wholeheartedly encourage anyone watching to note further possible optimizations in the comments, for both me and the other players, so that I can amend it into the final video when it comes out.

I’m currently waiting on the “Season 2.5” patch, but once it releases, I’ll return to uploading full character tutorials every week on ShoryukenTube, the Shoryuken.com YouTube channel. If the rebalance is significant, I might do more videos demonstrating season 2 changes. All guides from here on out will reflect season 2 changes, and I’ll soon amend all the guides that are already out. There’s a lot of content on the horizon, so you’ll want to subscribe to the channel!

Rising Up: Urien Character Tutorial — Optimal Combos, Setups, & Frame Traps

We’re back in swing with Rising Up full-character tutorials, hosted on ShoryukenTube. This time we’re focusing on Urien: bread and butter punishes and confirms, counter-hit setups, and damage optimization, fireball answers, frame traps listed by delay, meaty pressure, setups, and more. If you want to learn Urien, everything you need to know should be right here.

I had been putting off restarting this series until the Season 2.5 changes were in effect, but one of my longtime viewers Apoocalypse offered to make the Urien video, as he had a very strong understanding of the character and his options. This video accounts for all of Urien’s season 2.5 balance changes in the upcoming April patch, so it’s fully up to date. As usual, I’ve included an enormous guide in the video description.

I’ll be resuming my own character tutorials soon, once the patch is actually released. Remember to subscribe to the Shoryuken channel, and keep an eye out for future videos!

Rising Up: Essential Street Fighter V matchup knowledge — Birdie

I think the biggest two factors separating the beginners from intermediate players are having a plan going into a match, and understanding your opponents’ options. Further, I see a lot of players, beginners and experienced players alike, moving incorrectly and losing potential punishes on certain characters. So I’ve decided to try a series of videos where I talk about the essential strengths and weaknesses of each character, and how to play against them. I believe that Street Fighter–and fighting games in general–are dramatically more fun and interesting when both players are playing at a high level, so I want to ensure every player is only losing to their opponent and not to the matchup. My first video is on Birdie, as I think he’s quite commonly played, yet fairly poorly understood.

In this video I talk about Birdie’s anti-air options, anti-fireball options, reversal options, and unsafe attacks. The information I demonstrate here is very important but somewhat rudimentary. I encourage anyone who watches to contribute some of their own anti-Birdie matchup knowledge in the video’s comments section. I have no set order planned to make these videos, and I’ll happily pick my next character based on demand, so I also encourage you to tell me which characters or which special moves give you the most trouble. I’ll prioritize what characters I’ll cover next based on the feedback I get.

Rising Up: Kolin Bread and Butter Combo Guide — Punishes, Confirm Combos, Juggles, & More

Kolin, the personal assistant of Street Fighter III’s Gill, has just made her playable debut in Street Fighter V. Her toolset is fully original and extremely unique, and players from all over the globe are working together to figure out her strategies and compete with her. I’ve done my best to compile the optimal combos for every common scenario, so you can stop worrying about damage optimization and focus on strategy. This video features anti-airs, punishes, confirms, counter-hit combos, crush counter combos, juggles, and more.

Consider this video a precursor to my upcoming full Kolin character tutorial. The combos are all my own labwork, alongside a few things I’ve observed from other players. I’m fairly confident that most of these combos are fully ideal, but Kolin has an extremely large number of contexts for her attacks when factoring her backstep cancels, and I wouldn’t be surprised if missed some optimizations somewhere. For both me and the other players, I ask that those viewers somewhat acquainted with Kolin point out anything I might have missed in the comments, so that I can amend it into the final video when it comes out.

I’m currently waiting on the March rebalance, but soon after it drops, I’ll return to uploading full character tutorials every week on ShoryukenTube, the Shoryuken.com YouTube channel. If the rebalance is significant, I might do more videos demonstrating season 2 changes. All guides from here on out will reflect season 2 changes, and I’ll soon amend all the guides that are already out. Rising Up: Season 2 Roundup — Important Changes for Ibuki, Balrog, Juri, & Urien

With Season 2’s release, most players payed close attention to the buffs and nerfs their main character received; but with 92 pages of notes, it’s quite time-consuming to go through every single character. So, I’ll be making some short videos demonstrating some of the important changes to each character, to allow players to more rapidly brush up on their new mains and opponents.

This is the final series of videos, with the final batch of characters not already addressed in my first four roundups: Ibuki, Balrog, Juri, and Urien. All four of these characters were DLC characters, and they were also the most recently-added characters, so they had the least amount of time to develop. Most of them saw very little play in both tournaments and online, so balancing them against the rest of the cast seems daunting. This is not a comprehensive list of all changes, simply the ones I deemed most significant to gameplay. I might have overseen the ramifications of certain minor changes, however, so if you feel I left out something important, feel free to leave feedback on the video for me and other viewers.

I’ve now covered every single season 1 character, so I’m done with this series until the next balance patch. Expect character tutorial videos and the next Rising Up video in the weeks to come, and subscribe to the Shoryuken YouTube channel.

Rising Up: Season 2 Roundup — Important Changes for F.A.N.G, Laura, Alex, & Guile

This next batch of characters covered includes F.A.N.G, Laura, Alex, and Guile. These characters were designed later than the ones I addressed in my first three roundups, so this is the first significant rebalance they’ve seen. This is not a comprehensive list of all changes, simply the ones I deemed most significant to gameplay. I might have overseen the ramifications of certain minor changes, however, so if you feel I left out something important, feel free to leave feedback on the video for me and other viewers.

I’ll try and do one of these videos a day until I’ve covered the changes for all characters. Expect more upcoming character tutorials too, so remember to subscribe to the Shoryuken YouTube channel!

Rising Up: Season 2 Roundup — Important Changes for Vega, Rashid, R. Mika, Zangief, & Dhalsim

This next batch of characters covered includes Vega, Rashid, Rainbow Mika, Zangief, and Dhalsim. These characters were designed later than the ones I addressed in my first two roundups, and as such didn’t participate in as many betas prior to the game’s release, so this is the first significant rebalance many of them have seen.

Rising Up: Season 2 Roundup — Important Changes for Cammy, M. Bison, Karin, Birdie & Necalli

This next batch of characters covered includes Cammy, M. Bison, Karin, Birdie, and Necalli. These characters weren’t nearly as strong during season 1 as the first batch of characters I covered, and I think most of them saw a lateral tier shift.

Expect more upcoming Monday character tutorials too, so remember to subscribe to the Shoryuken YouTube channel!

Rising Up: Akuma Bread and Butter Combo Guide — Punishes, Confirm Combos, Juggles, & More

Akuma has just made his triumphant return to Street Fighter V, and new players everywhere are picking him up. I’ve done my best to compile the optimal combos for every common scenario, so you can stop worrying about damage optimization and focus on strategy. This video features anti-airs, punishes, confirms, counter-hit combos, crush counter combos, juggles, and more.

Consider this video a precursor to my upcoming full Akuma character tutorial. The combos are all my own labwork, alongside a few things I’ve observed from other players. I’m fairly confident that most of these combos are fully ideal, but Akuma’s combo avenues are extremely varied and I’m sure I’ve missed some optimizations somewhere. For both me and the other players, I ask that those viewers somewhat acquainted with Akuma point out anything I might have missed in the comments, so that I can amend it into the final video when it comes out. I’ve done my best to provide my part here.

I’m currently releasing full character tutorials every week on ShoryukenTube, the Shoryuken.com YouTube channel, as well as videos demonstrating season 2 changes every day. All guides from here on out will reflect season 2 changes, and I’ll soon amend all the guides that are already out. There’s a lot of content on the horizon, so you’ll want to subscribe to the channel!

Rising Up: Season 2 Roundup — Important Changes for Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, & Nash

With Season 2’s release, most players payed close attention to the buffs and nerfs their main character received; but with 92 pages of notes, it’s quite time-consuming to go through every single character. So, I’ll be making some short videos demonstrating some of the important changes to each character, to allow players to more rapidly brush up on their new mains and opponents.

The first four characters I’ve covered are Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and Nash, simply for their storyline relevance. Coincidentally (or perhaps not so coincidentally?), they were four of the strongest characters in Season 1, and all four have many nerfs compared to later characters I’ll be covering.

Expect more upcoming Monday character tutorials too; keep an eye out on the ShoryukenTube YouTube channel for an Akuma bread and butter combo video as well, sometime very soon.
