Learn Street Fighter V by Watching Two Japanese Gods

Chances are you’ve seen jmcrofts’ work by now. Since the release of Street FIghter V, he has been breaking some of the more confusing in-game mechanics down into easily digestable chunks to help newcomers get a good start in the genre. This style of video certainly offers plenty of help for fledgling fighters, but there are many other ways one can learn to fight.

One such alternative is to watch the pros throw down, and, knowing this, jmcrofts recently released two sets of match analysis, one starring MCZ|Daigo Umehara’s Ryu and another highlighting Nuki’s Chun-Li. In the videos, which you can find below, jmcrofts discusses optimal spacing, practical frame trap usage, and other aspects of Street Fighter V that can be difficult to convey in footage taken in training mode.

If you like the way these breakdowns were handled, jmcrofts would like you to send him some replays of your own for potential future analysis. To do so, submit your replay IDs to the comment section of the Nuki replay.

Deku Tree Discusses the Finer Points of Sheik’s Projectile Game in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

If you’re a Sheik player, you know you’ve got good tools. Most everything you have is good, in fact, but with so many options, knowing how to make the most out of each one can take time. Luckily, Deku Tree’s latest video discusses how to make use of one of the more important things at Sheik’s disposal: her needles.

Deku Tree makes the claim that Sheik’s needles are the best projectile present in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but before delving too deeply into that specific topic, he discusses what makes projectiles good as a whole. This leads to a nice discussion on how projectiles can be used to limit options from opponents and how fighting games are, in many ways, about limiting options.

The guide also poses the argument that a projectile, like Sheik’s needles, can be used as an effective means of gauging the skill level of an unfamiliar opponent. Based on how they react to these quick strikes from a distance, one can determine the sorts of habits they employ and can perhaps determine what to expect from them in the future.

Of course, the video isn’t only filled with general information; it is a Sheik strategy video, after all. Deku Tree spends the last portion of the guide discussing the process of effective needle application in a match. Sheik mains should be sure to give it a watch.

Street Fighter V Roundup – Cammy Hooligan Setups, Stylish R. Mika Options, and More

With Street Fighter V fast approaching the end of its first full month in the hands of gamers everywhere, and with the first stop on the Capcom Pro Tour just around the corner, it’s understandable that we’ve seen a bit of a decline in random bits of technology flowing in through our tip line. But not to worry! The tips are still coming in, and we’ve compiled some of the best for you to check out below.

We get things started today with Desk’s latest offering. While we’re used to seeing Desk deliver combos that border on impossible, this new bit of footage contains the opposite: proof that juggles immediately following a V-Reversal may (sadly, and actually) not be possible in Street Fighter V. While it’s certainly not common for a V-Reversal to land against an aerial opponent and cause this situation to occur, it does happen from time to time, and the resulting animation belies its true juggle properties.

Desk gives a handful of follow-ups a shot in this brief video, demonstrating that they do not work under such circumstances. Of course, this is cursory testing, so exceptions could exist, but don’t look to be likely at this point in time.

Sticking with Cammy, the following video from Pan should help satisfy your cravings for frustrating opponents and scoring (nearly) guaranteed damage. The setup, which follows an EX divekick followed by a standing fierce, takes advantage of the standing frames that occur directly before being able to act after an aerial reset to guarantee a Hooligan command grab. Of course, opponents can stick out an invulnerable move or specific buttons to prevent this, but the latter can be risky due to Cammy’s ability to option into another divekick instead of a grab.

If you’re looking for some reliable combos for more common situations Cammy may face, this next video from RandomSelectTV contains plenty of options from which to choose. In addition, the linked playlist included with the video contains some ways to counter common tactics from characters like Zangief and Birdie, and also offers a look at some of Cammy’s setups.

Up next, we’ve got two pieces of assorted Karin footage. The first, from Naast, breaks down some useful basic option selects Karin players can employ in a variety of situations, while the second, from Bmeister42, offers a look at some massive stun potential from the heiress in the event that she connects a Crush Counter.

If you dream of spreading the knowledge of Muscle Spirit, these R. Mika combo videos from Smash and Grab and RightClickRegulars will help make sure you do so in the best way possible. The former offers a stylish approach, while the latter takes a more practical path.

If you’re looking for some insights into creating resets with Nash’s V-Trigger, this next video from MashOnPad may give you the ammunition you need to make your opponents’ heads spin. And should you still be learning the ropes with this returning fighter, the video bumped up against it, from Berial Plays, will teach you how to get in some easy guaranteed damage.

We close things out today with a quick look at some Necalli corner reset options from MikeandIke12.

We’re still excited to receive new Street Fighter V content, so if you’ve got some, send it our way! Your video could be in the next Street Fighter V community roundup!

Bafael Takes an Extensive Look at Cammy, Birdie in Street Fighter V

Bafael has made tutorials for titles throughout the fighting genre, but his dedication to producing informative content for the Street Fighter series definitely stands out the most. You’ve certainly seen his introductory videos for each character in Street Fighter V by now–you can find them here if you haven’t–but maybe you’re in the market for a more detailed look at your cast member of choice.

If that’s the case, you’re in luck, as Bafael has been hard at work producing much more in-depth guides. These tutorials include in-depth looks at frame data, tips for applying (or avoiding) each individual button, general and specific tactics, and nearly anything else you could want to know about the highlighted character.

We’ve included his two most recent tutorials for Cammy and Birdie below, but you can find the rest in their dedicated playlist. Do note that these videos run well over an hour each, so you’re in for a lot of information.

Since these tutorials are so extensive, Bafael hasn’t yet gotten to the whole cast; he is, however, producing them at a reliable rate, so if your favorite character hasn’t yet received his informative treatment, stay tuned.

Millia Rages in New Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- Combo Video

Whether you’ve seen Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-‘s Millia in the hands of an intermediate player or top competitors, you’ve likely got a pretty good idea of what kind of combos to expect. Tired of seeing the same old Millia, Rele of Vienna’s Virtual Dojo dedicated hours to finding some needlessly stylish ways to deal damage with the veteran Guilty Gear cast member.

Instead of being a sometimes-tool, Chroming Rose takes center stage in many of these combos, but Rele makes use of other tactics as well. They use Roman Cancels to create stylish side-swaps, they perform loops to push grounded opponents all the way from one corner to the other, and sling multiple hairpins in the same combo thanks to timing everything around being able to successfully retrieve the pin between tosses.

If you’re looking for a refreshing take on Millia, be sure to give the video a look.

Modder Brings Q to Street Fighter V

You may recall that a recent set of fan renders brought Street Fighter III favorite Q into the world of three-dimensions, but it looks like those were just the beginning. Thanks to a brand new mod for the PC version of Street Fighter V, it’s now possible to strip Bison of his skin and given him a new, (perhaps) more powerful body based on the 3rd Strike representative.

Since this is simply a skin swap, Q sadly doesn’t come equipped with his signature slaps and kicks, but it’s still a pretty nifty mod. We’ve included a handful of screenshots in the slideshow below, so feel free to let us know what you think.

Rash Boasts Plenty of Bright Recolors in Killer Instinct

Picking an appropriate color for your fighter of choice is a decision not to be taken lightly. Assuming you stick to one palette, those bright duds become a visual representation of you as a player.

If you’re a hopeful Rash main looking to make this tough decision before Killer Instinct’s third season launch, you’ll be pleased to know that the developers recently released high resolution screenshots of every recolor the upcoming Battletoads representative will have, including a particularly stylish rainbow variant.

You can take a gander at all of these glorious color offerings for both original and retro Rash in the slideshow below. Feel free to let us know which is your favorite in the comments.

With the upcoming Killer Instinct update just around the corner, we’ll likely be seeing similar alternate color options for the rest of the newcomers quite soon. Rash will be taking his place alongside the rest of the Killer Instinct roster when Season 3 launches on March 29.

Master Bison’s Frame Traps and Pressure in Street Fighter V

Street Fighter V players who’ve taken to destroying opponents with psycho power now have another episode of Shadowloo Bootcamp to help them level up their Bison ability. In this installment, show host Ricardo “Mono” Roman hits on plenty of important topics ranging from how to turn your Bison into a walking frame trap to making the most out of anti-air situations.

Though the topics border on the more advanced side of fighting, this video is still quite beginner-friendly. Mono kicks things off with a breakdown of how frame data works, so those who’ve not yet taken a plunge into the numbers behind the game should have no trouble following along.

Aspiring Dictators would be wise to take a look at the rest of the Shadowloo Bootcamp series. You can find those videos by following this link.

Zangief’s Critical Art Storage Gives Him Even More Muscle Power in Street Fighter V

In a recent Street Fighter V upload, James Chen of UltraChen TV discusses the unusually long period of time he noticed passing between his 720 directional input and the pressing of a button that still allowed Zangief to throw out his Critical Art. Understandably confused (and possibly frustrated), James decided to sit down and see exactly what was going on and just how long he could wait between the motion and the button press to get the same results.

It turns out that there’s enough of a delay for the Red Cyclone to fill that gap between inputs with a few steps forward. This means that he can do something like, say, buffer a 720 while performing a standing fierce, step into range if the attack is block, press a second button, and dole out some devastating damage to his opponent.

Okay, so, alone, this is pretty sick, but James happened to be streaming when he discovered this technique, and some clever viewers asked if he could, instead of using a button press, perform the Critical Art through negative edging.

He could.

This means there are all sorts of new circumstances in which Zangief players can surreptitiously suplex their opponents. Forget protecting the Russian skies; the ground may never be safe again.

Pick Up a Plethora of Chun-Li Tactics in Street Fighter V

Tech always seems to find a way. Several months ago, Street Fighter V looked to have its merits, but the features garnering praise often did double work to turn away those who enjoy the more technical side of the genre. And while it is still simpler in many ways than its predecessor, Street Fighter V has slowly begun to unveil it’s more intricate inner workings to those dedicated enough to do some digging.

KSabot recently took  up their shovel and found enough Chun-Li information to fill two short videos. Now, not everything in these videos will find viewers scooping their jaws from the floor, but a number of the combos presented do feature tiny increments of walking between hits to keep things going longer than normally possible. Additionally, KSabot has included ways to beat many wakeup dragon punches with an instant stomp, fun methods for making the most of Chun’s V-Trigger, and much more.

If you’re in the market for some tactics to test your dexterity (and your opponents’ patience) give the videos a view.
