Super Mario Maker Stage Coming to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS

If you’ve come within a hundred miles of the internet since last Friday, you’ve certainly seen plenty of articles, videos, and general chatter involving Super Mario Maker. To add to the buzz, Nintendo recently announced that they will be bringing a stage inspired by the new title to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

Sadly, this celebration of the Mario franchise seeing tournament legality would likely happen after even Kirby’s Great Cave Offensive took its place on the main stage thanks to the chaos that the Mario Maker hand can cause, but I have to say that it still looks interesting to try.

But that’s not the only interesting news. Some crafty viewers deconstructed the Japanese version of this reveal video a bit and discovered a suspicious blank spot on the stage selection screen. With nothing unlocked, the downloadable stages make their way to the first page of stages, but you’ll notice that the bottom row sits grossly off center. When looking at the rows of stages above, one quickly notices that the disparity in the bottom row’s central location leaves just enough room for Nintento to plop in another stage.

The evidence that another stage is soon to follow the Mario Maker addition isn’t exactly conclusive, but it wouldn’t be unheard of for more stages to make their way into the game in future updates. You can check out the evidence below to draw your own conclusions.

Northeast Championships 16 Adds Caps to Killer Instinct, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and Skullgirls Encore Brackets

If you’re planning to attend Northeast Championship 16, you may want to go ahead and get your registration taken care of now. Tournament organizer Eric “Big E” Small announced earlier today that a handful of brackets have received hard caps for entrants. The following games are affected:

  • Killer Instinct received a cap of 80 players, with 33 slots filled at the time of announcement.
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 received a cap of 80 players, with 31 slots filled at the time of announcement.
  • Skullgirls Encore received a cap of 64 players, with 35 slots filled at the time of announcement.

Small’s announcement is apologetic, but no word was provided as to why these caps have been put in place. One can assume that the general popularity of these titles had some impact on the decision, but nothing is certain. Even with these limits in place, there’s still plenty of room to get your name thrown on the list to show the world what you’re made of.

For more information about Northeast Championship 16, as well as to register, you can head over to the Big E Gaming website.

M.O.D.O.K. Technique Shuts Down Vergil’s Incoming Options in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

The three-part plan to eliminating problem characters in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 runs something like this: snap them in, land a successful mix-up, then apply damage until their health bar dissolves. Sometimes this is easier said than done, especially when the most motivated of Sparda’s sons gets involved.

Vergil’s incoming options leave those who would eliminate him with more of a headache–not just because of, you know, Helm Breaker–to deal with than we’d like. But thanks to Hitbox Arcade’s Dustin, M.O.D.O.K. players now have the technology to put a stop to all of the swordsman’s incoming options through a simple mix of slime, flight, and mashing M+H.

If Vergil tries to block, he eats an unblockable. If he goes for Maximum Vergil, he gets thrown. And many of his other options whiff outright. The only way to escape is to perform what Dustin refers to as an “awkward delayed Helm Breaker,” but even that can be stuffed with the use of an assist character at the opportune moment.

Break Your Opponent’s Focus in Style with These Ultra Street Fighter IV Overhead Follow-Ups

In his latest video, Bafael offers some increased damage options for those moments when a two-hit overhead happens to connect against a focus attack in Ultra Street Fighter IV. Granted, this isn’t an overly common situation, and it only benefits a small portion of the cast, but the counter-hit afforded leaves opponents in enough hit stun to tack on some extra hits. Might as well take advantage of that situation, right?

Though this video lacks the narration Bafael usually includes, the information is all there. It includes simple follow-ups for each affected character to use after such an overhead, but it doesn’t take a combo mastermind to see the potential extra damage a little bit of meter can tack on to these situations.

Fan Calculates Strength of Superman’s ‘Kryptonian Crush’ in Injustice: Gods Among Us

Superman is powerful. That’s just one of those things that people know. But how powerful is the Man of Steel in the Injustice: Gods Among Us universe? NetherRealm Studios’ creative director Ed Boon tweeted last week that a player took the time to figure out just that. Their conclusion, which they based on the Kryptonian Crush attack, reveals the following:

Superman punches his opponent a whole 126 km into the sky! How powerful is that? Well it depends on the mass of the opponent…comicvine gives Darkseid a weight of 1815 lbs, which I will use. Energy-wise, that means Superman delivered 1.02E10 Joules of energy into that punch. In better terms, that’s 2.43 tons of TNT.

I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I double checked the math, because that’d be about as effective as me trying to survive one of these punches myself. If you fancy yourself a math whiz and wish to contest the data, you can find the calculations here.

Additionally, some may be quick to note that Darkseid, the character whose weight plays a role in determining the final result, does not appear in the console version of Injustice. The villain does, however, make an appearance in the mobile version of the game, wherein Supes can still deliver the same devastating blow.

Expand Your Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Wardrobe with These Falcom Crossover Costumes

If you’re looking to expand your Dead or Alive 5 Last Round wardrobe, you’ll be pleased to learn that the game’s cast is soon to receive a slew of new outfits. These duds draw inspiration from a number of intellectual properties created by the Nihon Falcom Corporation, including The Legend of Heroes, Ys Origin, and more.

These costumes are set to become available tomorrow, September 15, though the Xbox One can currently be purchased for $2.99 each or as a complete $33.99 set.

Our source, which lists prices in Japanese yen, suggests that these may be slightly higher price tags than the costumes will see on PlayStation 4, but USD pricing outside of the Xbox One version is not available as of this writing. Of course, if you’ve already purchased Season Pass 2 (PS4) or the New Costume Pass 2 (Xbox One), you’ll be receiving these outfits as part of those packages.

We’ve included the official trailer for these costumes, as well as an image gallery, below.

Step Up Your Summoner Quan Chi Game with Shujinkydink’s Mortal Kombat X Tutorial

If you’re in the market for a new Mortal Kombat X main, STB.BBS|Shujinkydink’s new Summoner Quan Chi guide offers arguments for why the pale sorcerer should be your next stop on the character select screen.

In this two part series, the Quan Chi master demonstrates how to make the most of the variant’s bat in every aspect of the match. These tips include approach options, zoning options, and how to perform combos that would normally cost meter by correctly timing the trait usage and saving the meter for something else, the importance of which can’t be stressed enough on a character so lacking in the defense department.

In addition to the standard tutorial fare, Shujinkydink dedicates a good deal of footage to setting up resets off of trance, including vortex options that can keep opponents locked down until death.

Bigboystoys Releasing Ken Figure Complete with Lighting and Sound Effects

Way back in January, the folks at Bigboystoys announced the release of their first Street Fighter figure, which appropriately featured Ryu tossing a Hadouken in front of a Street Fighter II-themed backdrop. At the time of its reveal, the company noted that they were also working on a Ken figure to act as a companion piece. Those who picked up the first figure will be pleased to know that this complementary figure will be ready to ship in just a few short months.

Much like his plasma-chucking counterpart, Ken comes equipped with LEDs and built-in sound effects to bring his fiery dragon punch to life. As you can see in the images below, Ken’s stage–his home court in Street Fighter II–can be connected to Ryu’s for a chibi-style showdown.

The Bigboystoys T.N.C. 02 KEN, currently available for preorder, is set to release in December and will run you $99.99.
