Combo Breaker to Use Most Recent Mortal Kombat X Update

combobreaker-skyline-edit

Last week, the organizers behind Combo Breaker announced that Jason Voorhees will be legal at next weekend’s tournament, news that undoubtedly brought a smile to the faces of players who had already established a love for the slasher flick guest character.

However, the release of yesterday’s patch to Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 4 (forthcoming on Xbox One and PC) causes a bit of a complication with regards to downloadable characters like Jason: since tournaments will need to connect to the internet to grab these additional fighters, they will be forced to grab the newest patch in addition to that content.

This means that using the most recent Mortal Kombat X patch at Combo Breaker was unavoidable. It is perhaps a little unfortunate that the patch had to release so close to a major tournament, but it’s likely this sort of thing would have happened anyways even if the patch had come earlier or later than it did; that’s just the nature of having so many premier events year-round.

The plus side to this is that players who have already acquired the patch are fully capable of practicing before the big event instead of having to hold off in an effort to avoid familiarity with a patch that wouldn’t have been used in competition. Combo Breaker reportedly spoke with NetherRealm Studios and numerous Mortal Kombat players from around the community before deciding that this is the best route to take for the tournament, and feel it shouldn’t affect the integrity of the matches.

Combo Breaker will be held next week, May 22-24, in Chicago, Illinois.

Mortal Kombat X Tops PlayStation Store Sales in April, Injustice Returns to the Charts

mkx-mileena-storytrailer-622-crop

It’s not a big surprise that Mortal Kombat X topped the PlayStation Store’s sales charts for April, but it did beat out some heavy-hitters, including the system exclusive (and console-moving) Bloodborne.

The real shock here is that the new title wasn’t NetherRealm Studios’ only representative on this list of top sellers. If you look all the way down at rank 19 on the PlayStation 4 chart, you’ll see that Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition barely made the cut, and it climbed all the way to 8th place on the PlayStation 3 list, which, obviously, couldn’t include Mortal Kombat X or a couple of the other big contenders available on its younger sibling.

Even so, a game that has been out so long and that has seen so many rock-bottom sale prices clawing its way back on to the sales charts is nothing to shake a fightstick at. Perhaps this was a case of the fresher game spurring sales of the older one? In any case, kudos Injustice.

These Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Vergil Combos Will Leave You Breathless (and Meterless)

If there’s one thing that Vergil is good at doing, it’s spending meter. If there are five more things he’s good at doing, it’s making those level three X-Factor runbacks, combo loops that seem to never end, and–

Well, you get the idea; Vergil is pretty good. In the video below, Heru Lightdasher360 focuses primarily on all of the devastating things that Vergil can do when he’s sitting on a full stock of meter and is willing to spend every bit of it to put his opponent in the ground. Thanks to this, we get to see several combos that make use of the additional properties of his Spiral Swords super, Sword Storm, and Blistering Sword, as well as all sorts of other unnecessary expenditures.

Of course, these combos are merely excellent ways to stylishly close out a match, since Vergil players can typically spend much less meter to get the same effects, but that doesn’t make this video and less entertaining.

Rebel 1, Action! Blazblue: Battle Cards Now Available for iOS

Back at the beginning of March, we reported that a brand new mobile title based on Arc System Works’ BlazBlue franchise would be making its way to iOS devices at some point this year.

It seems that today is the day, as BlazBlue: Battle Cards landed on iTunes this morning.

From what we’ve seen through early footage of the game, we know that it involves building decks of various types of attacks and pitting them against one another in a style akin to Blizzard’s wildly successful Hearthstone. Of course, the fact that it draws inspiration from the BlazBlue universe means that fans of the series should have a lot to look forward to with the incorporation of various characters from the series and even fighting game-esque combos.

We’ve included the official launch trailer below so you can check it out and see if this is the kind of thing that you’d like to give a shot. Do note that, while the game is completely free, it requires an iPad 2 or newer in order to play.

Alpharad Goes Duck Hunting in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

A can has never been scarier than the one that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s Duck Hunt brings to the fight. Whether its waiting patiently near the edge for the perfect moment to strike or spinning wildly through the air followed by a trail of smoke, all who oppose this animal duo would be smart to leave it alone, which is easier said than done.

In Alpharad’s newest How to Play 101 video, he takes Duck Hunt up against the online masses and shows how a well-placed explosive can make for some stylish and hilarious kills. Of course, he also takes full advantage of the rest of Duck Hunt’s zone-heavy toolkit, so look forward to plenty of clay pigeons.

Bafael Teaches How to Mixup Opponents in Mortal Kombat X

Bafael and Cross Counter TV are back with the final episode of their Mortal Kombat X tutorial series, which covers how to handle mixups. The most obvious and important thing to have when fishing for an opening is a variety of strings and other attacks that hit as overheads and lows.

This knowledge extends to the defensive game as well, and helps to drive home just how important knowing matchups can be in a game so heavily-influenced by strings with overhead and low options that come at the same place every time.

Though it may sound grim for those fighting against a knowledgeable opponent, mixup opportunities do exist outside of these mid-string options as well. Bafael discusses these at length and mentions canceling early hits into overhead or low attacks in order to gain small chunks of damage as an option–though this isn’t always the best idea depending on the safety of these attacks. He also stresses the importance of adding throws to the mix thanks to the fact that a throw tech cannot be performed while holding the block button.

If you’re having trouble landing hits, be sure to check out this video as well as one of their previous videos dedicated to pressure.

Learn How Directional Influence Works in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Proper directional influence can help keep characters alive a little longer than normal in the Smash series, but the way in which this life-saving technique works in the Wii U iteration has been the subject of much debate. Thanks to the inclusion of “vectoring” in the 3DS version, followed by its supposed removal from the game and various patches affecting gameplay in rather vague ways, it’s easy to see why there has been so much confusion about exactly which way to hold the stick in the event of being knocked away from the stage.

To help folks out, VaBengal has set out to clear up how to properly use directional influence in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The video covers how to properly use directional influence to avoid blast zones as well as what not to do, as certain inputs can cause characters to die earlier than they would have if no direction had been pressed.

Jason Lives! Combo Breaker Updates Downloadable Content and Patch Rules

combobreaker-skyline-edit

Last week, we reported that Mortal Kombat X newcomer and horror movie veteran Jason Voorhees would not be allowed during competition at Combo Breaker due to the proximity of his release to the tournament’s scheduled weekend. According to a new official ruling, however, this has changed, making the man with the machete legal for the Chicago-based event.

Combo Breaker’s updated guidelines mention that Killer Instinct’s Cinder will also be legal during play and Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- competitors can look forward to using ver.1.1. Sorry, Elphelt players

Finally, the announcement states that the event’s staff “will continue to monitor new content for game breaking bugs or exploits, and retains the right to make case-by-case decisions on these matters at any time.” So these rulings, as well as any others, are still subject to change until the time of the tournament.

Combo Breaker will be held May 22-24 in Chicago, Illinois.
