Mortal Kombat X Day 2 Roundup feat. Kenshi Strategies, 91% Kotal Kahn Combo, Character Breakdowns, and More

We’re now well into the second day of Mortal Kombat X’s official release, and it’s obvious that everyone is excited to help spread some knowledge surrounding the game. Today, we’ve got a collection of combos and other technology for a handful of fighters that are almost entirely different than those we shared yesterday, which is great to see. Let’s get started!

Team Spooky’s NerdJosh kicks things off today with a handful of combos for Kenshi’s Possessed variant. This variation is known for its high-damage hits, which Joshstrings together in a series of corner combos to reliably top out over 40% damage.

If Possessed Kenshi isn’t your thing, EnderGamma has offered up a quick collection of combos for all three of the blind swordsman’s fighting styles. They express some concern with regards to the damage output of the Kenjutsu variant, but seems to be pleased with the other two modes.

Yesterday, we featured plenty of Kotal Kahn tech from UltraDavid, which allowed the emperor to fully buff his damage with a totem and blood sacrifice mid-combo, dealing over 100% in just two hit-confirms.

However, today we’ve got a Kotal combo that pushes out 91% damage by itself. That’s right–ninety one percent. And it should go without saying, but this series of blows does take advantage of both of the fighter’s damage increasing specials.

If you caught the Fatal 8 last weekend, you likely saw Australia’s Tony-T throwing down with Raiden. Even though he went out in his first match, this mastermind had a great showing, especially since Austrailia isn’t exactly known for its Mortal Kombat scene. The fact that Tony was able to perform at such a high level in such a short amount of time amid a sea of Evo champions and other major names in the tournament scene speaks highly of his familiarity and comfort level with the series.

Below, you’ll find some of the Raiden findings he’s put together since the tournament’s end. It seems that 50% damage in one combo is no big deal for the Thunder God.

Next, the folks at Cross Counter have teamed up with TMP|NYChrisG to bring us some combos for all of Reptile’s variations, with a special focus on his Nimble form. This is one of the longer videos that we’ve seen so far this week, and it’s loaded with all sorts of ways to convert stray hits into damage. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Reptile combo video without a display of some Flash-style Basilisk strings, which you’ll find peppered throughout.

TheConan1234321 serves up some BnB combos for Sonya’s Covert Ops variant in this next video. This collection of mid-screen and corner combos includes various starters, many of which make great use of the fighter’s Military Stance to keep the hits coming.

Moving on, we’ve got a lengthy collection of combos for Kitana. These combos span all three of her variants, but most of the video is dedicated to her Assassin style.

If anyone is looking for a quick and easy way to learn how to make use of the game’s run mechanic mid-combo, I’d personally like to suggest giving the first combo presented a try. It leaves a great deal of room for error and is perfect for getting the hang of the new mechanic.

If there’s one thing you don’t want to do in Mortal Kombat X, it’s get cornered by Goro. As you’ll see in this video from Nico Montano, the Shokan prince gains massive combo potential when he’s got his opponent pressed against the wall.

And I have to say, picking the perfect anthem for a character can be tough, but Waka Flocka Flame’s “Hard in Da Paint” flows fits quite well with a series of Walk Punches.

As a departure from videos dedicated only to combos and setups, we’ve also received a couple of videos from SupermanSajam that detail how characters should approach the fight. These guides cover the differences between variations, important strings, and general strategies for winning with the characters in question.

The first two, which you’ll find below, focus on Jacqui Briggs and Cassie Cage.

Persona Gives NESTS Kyo Kusanagi Some Attention in Latest King of Fighters XIII Combo Video

Persona is back with another King of Fighters XIII combo video. This time, the combo aficionado puts NESTS Kyo Kusanagi (also known as EX Kyo) under the microscope to uncover the most damaging combos possible. As always, the strings presented by Persona push the limits of the character and include incredible corner loops and, of course, some touch of death combos.

And, as you’ll likely notice in the message embedded in the bottom left of the video, Persona plans to start taking their combo creativity into the realm of Mortal Kombat X next month. If Persona’s expertise with other games is any indication of the level of quality that we can expect from the Mortal Kombat X videos, then fans of the series have a lot to look forward to in May.

Mortal Kombat X Day One Roundup feat. Kotal Kahn Setups, Scorpion Combos, and Much More

With Mortal Kombat X freshly in the hands of eager fans, the community has positively exploded with day one tech videos. Combos and setups abound for the variety of characters that this new title offers, and we’ve gathered up a collection of some of the best clips from the first day.

Starting off, we’ve got a couple of videos from the master of commentary himself, David “UltraDavid” Graham. The grappler fan has shown a great deal of excitement with regard to Kotal Kahn and, as such, recently began creating videos that showcase some combos and setups for his Blood God variation.

The first video features a couple of useful combos, including the max damage output for a toward+2 opener at mid-range with one bar, and goes on to show some methods of getting totems into play and using blood sacrifice in a safe manner.

The longer of the combos that David displays in the previous video can be difficult to land due to the nature of the neutral jump punch included at the beginning, so he released a follow-up demonstration with a slightly easier variant that omits the move but still offers up almost the same amount of damage.

If that wasn’t enough Kotal Kahn for you, SpabRog made a video that shows plenty more combo options for the deity. These combos spend a good deal of time focusing on the character’s Sun God fighting style and prove that his damage output remains just as ridiculous in other variations.

Back around the release of Ultra Street Fighter IV, High0nPCP was at the forefront of discovering and sharing techniques for Decapre. Now with a new fighting game in his hands, he’s getting back into the combo video scene with an impressive first offering in the form of a Scorpion combo video.

The video features combos for all three of the ninja’s variants, progressing in both damage output and level of difficulty as the exhibition goes on.

Up next, VesperArcade has provided a handful of combos for Scorpion as well. Similar to the video above, this footage includes options for the Ninjutsu, Hellfire, and Inferno versions of this classic fighter, and should give Scorpion players a perfect place to get started.

And it’s always nice to have some anti-air tricks up your sleeve, so mets3214 figured out a way for Inferno Scorpion to score huge damage off a misplaced jump. The combo shells out a whopping 44% damage, which should deter opponents from making unsafe jump-ins.

Team Spooky’s NerdJosh takes the stage next with a healthy helping of Ferra/Torr combos for the duo’s Lackey variant. These combos start out beginner-friendly and offer modest damage output, but quickly escalate to top out at around the 45% mark, which is nothing to scoff at.

The next video, which comes from Elite Tournament Chile’s Mcfly, shares some combos for the game’s resident purveyor of the bladed hat, Kung Lao. The video has a long intro dedicated to Mcfly’s upcoming attendance of Galloping Ghost Arcade’s Shang Tsung’s Fight Night dedicated to the legends of Mortal Kombat, but the combos begin at around the 1:20 mark, doling out big damage across all variants as well as some specific to each of the fighter’s three styles. Some of these also include Brutality enders to put the hurt on opponents in a stylish manner.

With different playstyles available to every character in the game, we are now faced with the opportunity to pick up combos that are not only specific to our fighter of choice, but also to the variant that we play. In order to show just how much this can affect something like a simple bread and butter, SupermanSajam put together a quick look at one of Cassie’s combos and how it changes across each of her variants.

Have you found something brutal in Mortal Kombat X that you can’t wait to share? Drop us a line and let us know; your video could be featured in our next roundup!

Roll Your Way to Victory with Abel’s Resets in Ultra Street Fighter IV

Abel’s propensity for sick resets is nothing new. The French mercenary has been rolling his way to victory after popping opponents skyward with his crouching fierce for years now, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t always creative new ways for him to make his enemies’ heads spin.

When in the middle of the screen, his reset options become pretty easy to judge, as the same buttons tend to produce the same results as far as Abel’s placement at the end of his roll is concerned. But as you’ll see in this video from Anon823, the corner is an entirely different story. It seems that with something as simple as a slight delayed button press, Abel can select the side on which he will appear at the end of his roll.

Anon offers a handful of different ways to follow this reset, with varying degrees of safety depending on the sort of opponent Abel is facing or the amount of conditioning he’s managed in the set. Check out the tutorial below and see what you can pick up.

Yahoo! Maximize Yun’s Post-Ultra Damage in Ultra Street Fighter IV

It’s important to get the most damage possible out of every hit that lands when playing any fighting game. Knowing exactly how to do this takes a certain degree of familiarity not only with the character you’re playing, but with the game as well.

In an effort to help Yun players reach their max damage potential, xOver of the Rush and Kill Clan put together a brief breakdown of all the fighter’s follow-up options for his Ultra 1. As expected, these combos include options for various screen placements, meter expenditure, and even offer up some ambiguous reset opportunities. And it just wouldn’t be a Yun combo video without some love for his Genei Jin super.

Do note that all of these juggles assume that Yun landed a raw Ultra combo. If you performed an attack to juggle into the Ultra to begin with, these options become much more limited.

What Platform Have You Chosen for Mortal Kombat X?

Concurrent console and PC releases aren’t common in the fighting genre. Even in the last year, PC players were forced to wait two months after the console release of Ultra Street Fighter IV (patch version) before getting their hands on it themselves. And beyond that, there are a slew of other popular titles that remain exclusive to either Xbox or PlayStation, even outside of the PC market.

This is a sad reality, as the more ways that we have to play these games, the bigger the community stands to grow as a whole. It’s just easier to not have to go out and buy every console on the market to have access to all titles within a single genre. But for the time being, we can at least be pleased with that fact that Mortal Kombat X will be hitting both Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as PC at the same time, which is definitely a step in the right direction.

With all of this in mind, and with Mortal Kombat X’s release today, we’d like to know which platform you’ll be using when you take to the Dead Woods. Below, we’ve provided a poll where you can select your answer. If you’ve not yet pre-ordered a copy of the game, go ahead and check off the version that you plan on playing so we can all see what kind of a spread to expect once this title takes off.

Oni, Cody, Sakura, Chun-Li, and More Provide an Ultra Street Fighter IV Combo Fix

The latest set of Ultra Street Fighter IV combos from freeno0b covers a wide array of cast members and manages to provide strings that could potentially work their way into a match as well as some that serve little purpose beyond simply being something that exists within the game. For example, Cody fitting ten light kicks into a single combo scales the damage to the point of uselessness, but it’s still interesting to see unfold.

On the other end of the spectrum, freeno0b’s offerings for Sakura and Chun-Li–two characters that, by now, are almost required in a multi-character combo video–bring enough damage to make up the difference.

If you enjoy seeing things that you’ll likely not be seeing anywhere else, you’re sure to enjoy this video.

Sonic Fox, MIT, Perfect Legend, and More Showcase Early Mortal Kombat X Competition at ESL’s Fatal 8 Invitational

On Saturday, NetherRealm Studios teamed up with the folks at ESL and Xbox to present the first official Mortal Kombat X tournament. The event featured a selection of eight high-level competitors, who faced off in a single-elimination bracket comprised of first-to-five sets.

If you didn’t catch the tournament live, or if you just want to have a nice place to steal some tech once the game releases tomorrow, ESL has uploaded the tournament in its entirety for your viewing pleasure.

The tournament had a wide array of character representation, including Kung Lao, Quan Chi, Raiden, Scorpion, Jax, and Erron Black. The only cast member fielded by two players was Kung Jin, who saw use from Ryan “FA|Prodigal Son” Hart and Christian “KiT|Forever King” Quiles.

Also interesting is that, once selected, all contenders stuck to their guns as far as their character’s fighting variation was concerned, with the exception of Ryan “Ketchup” Neal and Malik “MIT” Terry, who saw success with all three of Scorpion’s different fighting styles. One particularly noteworthy match saw the latter struggle against Razer’s Carl “Perfect Legend” White as Ninjutsu Scorpion, initially going down two matches against the Evo champ. Once at this disadvantage, MIT switched to Inferno and ended up taking the set, speaking volumes about the potential for matchups to change entirely based on a variation switch and promising for a healthy metagame.

Below, we’ve embedded all three finals matches, but you can follow this link to watch the full tournament playlist. For results and a full match log, be sure to head over to our coverage of the event.

Bucketheads Unite in This Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Team Concept Video

Concept videos for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are always exciting, especially when such videos are devoid of characters like Doctor Doom and Vergil. In the video below, pat728 has given us just that as Nova and Arthur team up to throw down.

One of the main strengths of this pairing is the fact that Arthur’s dagger assist leaves opponents in so much blockstun that Nova has free reign to run his high/low mixups–he’s even able to go so far as to attempt two overheads on the same assist if he so pleases. This duo also offers up plenty of situations where Nova will be left with frame advantage in the case of a block, or with the ability to follow a hit with a combo of his choosing.

Additionally, this team has access to some particularly nasty incoming mixups as well as ways to hit-confirm into easy crumples in the event that you want to tag in a third member of the party, who could very well be a top-tier contender, to finish the plate.

Of course, a video like this wouldn’t be complete without some exciting combos, which pat728 has included in bulk, so be sure to check it out below and let us know what you think.

Pick Up Peach’s Jump Cancel Fast Fall Technique in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Success in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U ties closely to a player’s ability to efficiently move around the stage. Not only does proper mobility allow players to get where they want to be exactly when they want to be there, but techniques like fast falling and perfect pivoting offer tiny recovery and spacing advantages over those who are stuck in the world without them.

Today, EOE released a tutorial video for Peach’s ability to float cancel fast fall. When added to Peach’s arsenal, this maneuver allows the princess spacing and approach options that she didn’t have before, including the ability to re-grab thrown turnips, emulate platform cancels, and a whole lot more.
